  • Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is one of the promising representive of polymer gate dielectric for its high resistivity and sutible dielectric constant. PMMA (Mw=96700) films were prepared on p-Si by spin coating method. PMMA were coated compactively and flatly as observes by AFM. MIS(Al/PMMA/p-Si) structure was made and capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current-voltage (I-V) measurements were done with PMMA films for repeated annealing cycles at $100^{\circ}C$. 1-V measured at various delay times $(0{\sim}20sec)$ showed little change and the absence of hysteresis in the I-V characteristics with delay times, which eliminate the possibility of deep traps in the PMMA films. The observed thermal stability, smooth surfaces, dielectric constant, I-V behavior implies PMMA formed by spin coating can be used as an efficient gate dielectric layer in OTFTs.

  • In the present study, multi-layered Si DLC (Silicon Diamond-Like Carbon) coatings with HMDSO (Hexamethyldisiloxane) buffer layers are applied on SKD 11 substrates by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) with different HMDSO gas flow rates, while the gas flow rate of $C_2H_2$ is fixed to enhance the electric resistivity of forming dies for electrically assisted forming. The HMDSO buffer layer is introduced to increase adhesion between the base metal and Si-DLC layers. The result of evaluation of electric resistivity and adhesion strength shows that the properties are affected by the flow rate of HMDSO, while the flow rate of 80 sccm results in the coating with the highest electric resistivity and adhesion strength among the selected flow rates.

  • In this study, the influence of the physical properties of ink such as ink dispersity and emulsified amount on the printability of a coated paper was investigated with seven kinds of cyan inks. In addition, two kinds of coating formulations were tested to evaluate the effect of coating structure on the coated paper printability. It was found that the cyan ink with $2{\mu}m$ pigment size had the best dispersibility and hence the ink showed a best ink density on the two kinds of coated papers. When the emulsified ink A with IPA 20 wt% had a lower viscosity than emulsified ink B with IPA 10 wt%, the emulsified ink A showed relatively high value of the ink transfer rate in comparison with emulsified ink B. Despite the high value of ink transfer rate, the coated paper did not show a good printability because those inks with low viscosity due to a strong emulsification were easy to make print mottle on the coated paper.

  • The life time of cutting tool was studied in the relation with the properties of TiN coating tools. The purpose of this study is to compare the cutting conditions of the TiN coated tools with those of the non-coated tools and to find out the optimal cutting condition of the TiN coated tool. The coated tools were prepared by the sputtering process at $4$\times$10^{-3}$Torr. When the cutting speed is increased 22.2% from 90m/min, the limited life of coating bite was decreased by 60.61%, but non-coating bite was decreased by 64.05%. In the tool lifetime equation of the coated tools "a"(exponent of feed rate) was not much changed in comparison with that of the non-coated tools but "n" (exponent of tool′s life) was increased by 9.3% and "b" (exponent of cutting depth) was increased by 2.4%. It was thought to be that TiN coated tools was used for higher cutting speed than non-coated tools to improve the lifetime of the coated tools.

  • Thermal shock behavior of TiN-coated SUS 304 substrate was investigated using a laser ablation method. By short surface ablation with a pulse Nd-YAG laser, considerable surface crack and spalling were observed, whereas there were few oxidation phenomena, such as grain growth of TiN crystallites, nucleation and growth of $TiO_2$ crystallites, which were observed from the coatings quenched from $700^{\circ}C$ in a chamber. The oxygen concentration of the ablated coating surface with the pulse laser also had a lower value than that of the quenched coating surface by Auger electron spectroscopy and electron probe micro analysis. These results were attributed to the fact that the properties of the pulse laser method have a very short heating time and so the diffusion time for oxidation was insufficient. Consequently, it was verified that the laser thermal shock test provides a way to evaluate the influence of the thermal shock load reduced oxidation effect.

  • The temperature coefficient of a gun propellant could be reduced by applying an appropriate surface coating material. The burning rates of those propellants do not very strongly depend on the propellant temperature. It is a good method to increase the muzzle velocity of gun ammunitions by utilizing the permissible maximum pressure in the gun barrel independent of the propellant temperature. During this study, properties of surface coated propellants were confirmed by results in tests of a closed bomb and 40mm Gun firing, and confirmed that production of coating propellant could be possible.

  • In this paper, the effect of functionally graded material (FGM) coatings on the fracture behavior of semi-elliptical cracks in cylinders is assessed. The objective is to calculate the stress intensity factor (SIF) of a longitudinal semi-elliptical crack on the wall of an aluminum cylinder with FGM coating. A three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) is used for constructing the mechanical models and analyzing the SIFs of cracks. The effect of many geometrical parameters such as relative depth, crack aspect ratio, FG coating thickness to liner thickness as well as the mechanical properties of the FG coating on the SIF of the cracks is discussed. For a special case, the validity of the FE model is examined. The results indicated that there is a particular crack aspect ratio in which the maximum value of SIFs changes from the deepest point to the surface point of the crack. Moreover, it was found that the SIFs decrease by increasing the thickness ratio of the cylinder. But, the cylinder length has no effect on the crack SIFs.

  • Dichroic beam-splitter (DBS) with polarization-maintaining took an important role in the free space quantum telecommunication tests on the Micius satellite of China. In this presentation, we designed and prepared a 50 layer polarization-maintaining DBS coating by a dual ion beam sputtering deposition (Dual-IBS) method. In order to solve a stress problem, an 18 layer special anti-reflection (AR) coating with similar physical thickness ratio was deposited on the backside. By stress compensation, the surface flatness RMS value of the DBS sample decreased from 0.341 λ (@632.8 nm) to 0.103 λ while beam splitting and polarization maintaining properties were almost kept unchanged. Further, we discussed the mechanism of film stress and stress compensation by equation deduction and found that total stress had a strong relationship with the total physical thickness and the ratio of layer materials.

  • In this study, we have studied synthesis of zirconia-alumina composite coating materials via a low-temperature sol-gel process. The zirconia-alumina composites were prepared by coating zirconia precursor, alumina precursor, and organosilane mixture on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate through three steps: sol-gel process, low-temperature photocuring process, and heat treatment process. The structural properties and element analysis of the composites were confirmed by FT-IR and XPS. The coated composite showed a transmittance of 96% or more in the visible light region with a wavelength of 420 nm or more and pencil hardness of 9H or more. In case of the composite of the molar ratio of zirconia and alumina of 1:4, the highest nanoindentation hardness was measured with 1.212 GPa.

  • Steels for automotive fuel tank require unique properties such as corrosion resistance for fuel, welding for joining, forming for press, and painting for exterior. Recently, automakers have been requiring excellent seam weldable steels to enhance manufacturing productivity of fuel tank. Thus, POSCO developed a new type of functional steels coated with nano-composite thin layer on Zn-Ni plating steels. The nano-composite coating solution was prepared by mechanical fine dispersion of solutions consisting of polymeric resin and nano-composite materials in aqueous media. The composite solution was coated on the plating steel surface by using roll coater and cured through induction furnace. These new developed plating steels were evaluated for quality performances such as seam and spot weldability, press formability, and corrosion resistance. These new functional steels coated with nano-composite layer exhibited excellent seam weldability and press formability. Detailed discussion of coating solution and experimental results suggest that nano-sized composite dispersion as coating layer plays a key role in enhancing the quality performance.
