  • In order to process materials such as engineering plastics, which are difficult to mold due to their high strength compared to conventional polymer materials, it is necessary to improve the hardness and strength of parts such as screws and barrels of injection equipment in extrusion system. High-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) process is well known for its contribution on enhancement of surface properties. Thus in this study, using the HVOF process, WC coating layers of different thicknesses were bonded to the surface of S30C substrate by controlling the movement speed of the spray nozzle and each property was evaluated to decide the optimization condition. Through the results, the thickness of WC coating layer increased from 0 to 200 ㎛ maximum, along with the decrement of nozzle movement speed and the surface hardness get increased. Especially, the coated layer with the thickness over 180 ㎛ under the nozzle speed 500 mm/s had high hardness than thinner layer. In addition, the amount of wear consumed per unit time was also significantly reduced due to the formation of the coating layer.

  • Fractures of galvannealed coating layer during actual press forming in automotive applications were observed by scanning electron microscopy in order to understand fracture mechanism. Fracture behaviors of galvannealed coating layer in extra deep drawing quality steels and high strength steels have been studied by performing the tests describing the representative plastic deformation in sheet metal forming such as uni-axial tensile test, compression test, bi-axial test and plane strain test. Growth and direction of cracks were deeply related to the plastic deformation modes and history. The material properties of galvannealed coating layer were investigated by nano-indentation test equipped with Berkovich diamond indentor for the specimens. Hardness and elastic modulus of the coating layer were higher than bared steels and that was the reason for crack of coating layer. Flat friction test and drawbead friction test were performed to observe the effect of the surface morphology on the frictional characteristics. The micro-plasto hydrodynamic lubrication were appeared and played an important role in reducing the coefficient of friction.

  • The possibility of Cu-Al-Ni intermetallic coating on the mild steel through the combustion synthesis has been investigated. In particular, the effect of the ball milling energy on the microstructure of the coating layer was examined to obtain the best coating condition. Experimental results show that Cu-Al-Ni powder compact was explosively synthesized and successfully coated with the steel matrix. It was revealed that the formation of $Cu_9Al_4$ intermetallic decreased with increase in the ball milling energy. This result supports that the high energy ball milling would be effective for obtaining the most suitable microstructure for Cu-Al-Ni coating layer. However, the excessive ball milling energy seems to decrease the bonding strength between the coating layer and the matrix.

  • Sealing treatment is a post-surface treatment of the plasma spray coating process to improve the corrosion resistance of the coating material. In this study, the effect of the sealing on the corrosion resistance and adhesive strength of the plasma spray-coated alumina coatings was analyzed. For sealing, an epoxy resin was applied to the surface of the coated specimen using a brush. The coated specimen was subjected to a salt spray test for up to 48 hours and microstructural analysis revealed that corrosion in the coating layer/base material interface was suppressed due to the resin sealing. Measurement of the adhesive strength of the specimens subjected to the salt spray test indicated that the adhesive strength of the sealed specimens remained higher than that of the unsealed specimens. In conclusion, the resin sealing treatment for the plasma spray-coated alumina coatings is an effective method for suppressing corrosion in the coating layer/base material interface and maintaining high adhesive strength.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate whether EVAc, acryl latex and biobinder could substitute the part of SB latex for pre-coating color formula or not. Different coating colors prepared through the substitution of 30% SB latex with EVAc, acryl latex, and biobinder were applied for pre-coating layer. 100% SB latex is used as a binder for top coating color. The optical properties, gloss, roughness, stiffness, dry- and wet-pick strength were measured. There were no significant differences in the brightness, whiteness, opacity, roughness, ink set-off and gloss of paper coated with 5 different coating colors. However the stiffness, dry- and wet-pick strength were somewhat lower than those of conventional coating color which 100% SB latex was used as a binder. Although the part of SB latex could be substituted with EVAc, acryl latex and biobinder without sacrificing the qualities of coated paper. Further researches on the improvement of stiffness, dry- and wet-pick strength, and the optimization of rheology of coating color in order to improve the qualities of coated paper are strongly recommended.

  • Effect of elastic modulus mismatch on the contact crack initiation is investigated to find major parameters in designing desirable surface-coated system. Silicon nitride coated soft materials with various elastic modulus mismatch, E$\_$c//E$\_$s/=1.06∼356 are prepared for the analysis. Hertzian contact test is conducted for producing contact cracks and the acoustic emission detecting technique for measuring the critical load of crack initiation. The implication is that coating thickness and material strength are controllable parameters to prevent the initiation of contact cracks resulted from the elastic modulus mismatch in the hard ceramic coating layer on the soft materials.

  • Thermal spraying is one of the most common surface coating techniques to be used for many applications and flame spraying covers a wide range of different materials which can be coated onto various substrates. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mixed ratio in composite coatings on the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties. The five different types of composite coatings were made with $Al_2O_3$ ceramic and Ni-alloy powder on the mild steel substrate by flame spraying method. The mechanical properties such as microhardness, adhesive strength and erosion resistance and corrosion resistance were tested for the sprayed coating specimens. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The composite coating layers greatly improve the microstructure, erosion resistance and adhesive strength by increasing the content of Ni-Al alloy. 2. Microhardness of the compsite coating layer is decreased by increasing the content of Ni-Al alloy. 3. The anti-corrosion properties is considerably improved by increasing the compsite rate of Ni-Al alloy.

  • The nano-composite membranes were prepared onto the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes through twice dip-coating known layer-by-layer method. For the first coating, poly(vinylsulfonic acid, sodium salt)(PVSA) and Poly(styrene sulfonic acid)(PSSA) were used with varying the concentration and ionic strength (IS) and the poly(ethyleneimine)(PEI) as the second coating material was fixed at 10,000 ppm and IS = 0.3. To characterize the prepared nano-composite membranes, the permeabilities and rejection ratio were measured for each 100 ppm NaCl, $CaSO_4$, $MgCl_2$, and 25 ppm MO aqueous solution. The rejections were increased as the concentrations of coating materials increased. And it was confirmed that the salt rejections for PSSA as the coating material were higher than for PVSA. Typically, the permeability, 1.848 LMH and the rejection for MO 76.3% were obtained at the coating conditions of PSSA 30,000 ppm and I.S = 1.0.

  • The effect of post-heat treatment on the coating characteristics and the fatigue strength of the gas flame thermally sprayed Stellite alloy coatings on $0.35\%$ carbon steel were investigated. The fatigue fracture surfaces of the heat treated samples were observed using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). For as-sprayed samples, there was considerable scattering in the fatigue life due to the presence of the pores in the coating. After the post-heat treatment to improve the microstructural characteristics of the coating layer, the fatigue strength of the specimens was greatly improved, increasing with increasing the coating thickness. For the specimens with the 0.3mm and 0.5mm thick coating, the fatigue cracks originated in the substrate region just below the interface. On the contrary, for the specimens with the 1.0mm thick coating, they nucleated at the pore within the coating, and the fatigue strength was 2.6 times higher than that of the substrate due to the high fatigue resistance of the coating.
