The aim of this research was to evaluate the influences of coating components and structures on ink absorbency. The ink absorbency was measured as porosity, K&N ink absorption, gloss and ink set-off. In order to obtain the relationship between the coating structure and the ink absorbency, the binder level was adjusted and two types of pigments were examined. One of the pigments was known to make the porous coating structure and the other one had strong ink affinity. The effects of coating components were studied by applying six different types of latex and various additives . In this research, CLC(cylindrical laboratory coater) and Prufbau printability tester were used. It was found that the decreasing latex dosage and introducing porous pigment were effective solutions to increase ink absorbency. However, the ink absorbency could not be improved by applying the fine pigment even though it had strong ink affinity. Among the characters of the latex, particle size and surface tension were found to have the strong effect on ink absorbency. The ink absorbency increased with large particle size and low surface tension latex. The additives were varied and it was found that applying to the top coating was effective.

The local surface strength variation of coated papers were measured at various speeds on a number of coated paper samples to study the effects of speed and ink tack on coating pick. Coating pick phenomenon is observed in an ink transfer variation curve as a decrease in the slope of the curve. On the other hand, it causes an actual decrease in net ink transfer to paper with an increase in speed. The effect of speed on coating pick depends on ink tack, ink film thickness and surface properties of coating layer formation of paper. A novel device to measure the surface strength can rate the coating paper in a different order. Comparison are made between dry test of coating paper pick and wet coating pick test of printing in IGT printability tester. Coating formulation is the main key to prevent from coating pick. The binder level increases, the coating pick and the slop decrease. The piling on blanket in printing is a problem when the coating pick is occur on a local area rather than average surface strength of coated papers.

This paper was performed to investigate the effect of pore structure on ink residual behavior. To prepare different coating structures as substrates against inks, fine, medium and coarse calcium carbonate were used in the coating color. It is well known ink properties can affect to print qualities. After printing on the coated paper, ink layer can consider as third structure addition to paper and coating layer. To compare effect of ink properties on the surface structure and print qualities, several properties of ink were also adopted as raw material. Particle size of pigment effect on gloss evaluation of coated paper increased with calendering. It was shown that ink transfer rate increased as surface of the sample was smooth. The ink contained low viscosity resin evaluated more print gloss. Finer pigment particle size, smaller pore size and higher porosity. Pore volume of coated paper was slightly decreased with printing as the coating was prepared with the finest particle size. However, it founded that ink resin could not affect on pore volume and distribution of printed paper

Paper coating can give smoothness surface and good printability to uncoated paper. Macro roughness of base paper would be decreasing its groove and grit in view of side. Nevertheless its improving effect for paper, some kind of problem is showing in the fine coated paper. Especially, back trap mottle is one of serious problems in printing with fine coated paper. Printers can not adjust conditions to overcome the problem. Also large amounts of paper can be rejected. There are many factors that influence back trap mottle. However it is not clear what the important parameters are in back trap mottle. Back trap mottle has some relationship with ink setting but good guidelines are not clear. Back trap mottle has been linked to non-uniform ink setting. We do not know how much variation in setting we can tolerate. Other mottle issues such as micro-picking and ink refusal are still common. This paper was prepared to identify correlation with ink setting and delta ink density obtained from experiment and then tried to find out some relationships with ink setting and back trap mottle. Basically fine calcium carbonate and ciay was used for main components and coarse calcium carbonate was mixed in two fine pigments to change its porosity and ink acceptance. Micro ink tack force at KRK printing tester was adapted to measure ink setting rate. KRK units were used for back trap mottle simulation and two printed samples were prepared to check delta ink density. Clay base coating has more fast ink setting time than calcium carbonate's though smoothness of clay was better than calcium carbonate. It could be explained by that clay has finer pore in its coating than calcium carbonate. DID(delta ink density) has shown a good correlation with ink setting time from micro ink tack. The total pore volume of coating layer did not match with ink setting and DID. From the results we might conclude coating that has fine pore size around 0.05 ${\mu}m$ can be exposed to high possibility of back trap mottle.

The objective of this study was to investigate the viscosity of coating colors and ink-jet printing properties with different coating colors with various blending ratios of silica based pigments. The volume of pigments was measured to evaluate the effect of the pigments on the viscosity of coating colors. Contact angle, the change of ink diameter, optical density, and the area and perimeter of a printed let-ter were evaluated to examine the effect of the ink absorption on the ink-jet printing properties. Generally, as the amount of silica pigments Increased the ink-jet printing quality improved. But this caused an increase of the overall coating viscosity.

To develop paper coating technology for preventing print mottling, which is recognized as the most common printing problems in using coated papers, ink absorption properties of various coated papers were examined by employing K 8T N and Croda ink absorption tests. The influences of pigment compositions, coat weights and drying methods on these ink absorption properties were examined, and then the variations of ink absorption ratio were analyzed and discussed. It is demonstrated that the variation of Croda ink absorption ratio induced by coat weight variation can be utilized most succesfully to predict print mottling propensity of coating formulations. A systematic analysis approach was suggested that can be employed in the development of the most desirable coating color formulation to achieve target optical properties with the least print mottling.

In this study, the influence of the physical properties of ink such as ink dispersity and emulsified amount on the printability of a coated paper was investigated with seven kinds of cyan inks. In addition, two kinds of coating formulations were tested to evaluate the effect of coating structure on the coated paper printability. It was found that the cyan ink with $2{\mu}m$ pigment size had the best dispersibility and hence the ink showed a best ink density on the two kinds of coated papers. When the emulsified ink A with IPA 20 wt% had a lower viscosity than emulsified ink B with IPA 10 wt%, the emulsified ink A showed relatively high value of the ink transfer rate in comparison with emulsified ink B. Despite the high value of ink transfer rate, the coated paper did not show a good printability because those inks with low viscosity due to a strong emulsification were easy to make print mottle on the coated paper.

This paper was made to evaluate the effect of the type of latex for coating on the printability by investigating the structure of pore such as the pore fraction, the number of pores, pore size and distribution of coated paper. The coated structure is mainly depend on the results of interaction between pigment and binder. It means that the structure of pore formed is chiefly affected by the type of latex. This physical properties of pore have a close relation with ink set-off associated with the drying rate, the speed of penetration of ink into base paper and printing gloss. Therefore it was necessary to find out the relationship between pore structure and the performance of printability by modifying the type of latex to vary the pore structure of coated paper. Acrylic latex was superior to S/B latex in the sedimentation volume, compressibility, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, the weight of transferred ink onto the coated paper and ink repellance. In contrast, water retention and ink setting were not good. in the comparison of anionic and amphoteric latex, amphoteric latex showed better performance in the thickness, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, pore size, the weight of ink transmitted and K&N ink receptivity, etc.

It was observed that drying temperature and curing time in the paper coating process as well as Tg of the latex used as a binder, greatly affected the properties of the coated paper such as roughness, paper and print gloss, K & N ink drop, and ink set-off. The higher drying temperature induced faster water evaporation and change in binding density, which caused an increase in paper roughness, ink gloss and ink set-off, but decrease in paper gloss and K & N ink drop. The increased curing time promoted latex filming and redistribution of the binder in coating layer. This increased pick strength and ink gloss, but decreased ink trapping. Finally, the higher Tg of the latex showed the wider changing range of these properties.

Experimental work was carried out in order to produce a novel grade of ink-jet paper that has both high print-out quality and price competitiveness. Usually, silica and PVOH has been used for ink-jet paper to design the coating layer that has a hydrophilic and micro-porous structure. However, poor rheological characteristics and low productivity of the silica-PVOH system make the price of the ink-jet paper high. The main focus of this study was replacing the conventional silica (coating pigment) PVOH (binder) coating system with the new PCC (coating pigment) cationic starch (binder) coating system, and optimizing thecoating technology associated with PPC-cationic starch system. In this study, ink-jet print quality of PCC-coated papers was compared with that of silica-coated paper. Two types of PCC were used: conventional type and colloid type. It turned out that PCC C, a conventional coating pigment, has not given a desirable result: it showed high dot reproduction, but it gave low optical density. In spite of low dot reproduction, the qualities of PCC A were comparable or superior to those of silica in optical density, color reproduction, and the uniformity of printing surface. It was also shown that the problems that are happened when the dosage level of cationic starch was too low were varied with ink-type used in each printer. However, in the case of low binder level, the produced image was widely spread resulting fromtoo low optical density of images, or from the lack of bonding ability to set ink into coating surface.
