  • Coastal circulations during the (surface condition of an) idealized cold-air outbreak are numerically investigated with two-dimensional, non-hydrostatic model in which a constant bottom-slope exists. The atmospheric forcing during a cold-air outbreak is incorporated as the surface cooling and the wind stress. When the offshore angle of the wind-stress vector, defined as the angle measured from the alongshore axis, is smaller than 45 degrees, a strong downwelling circulation develops near the coast. A sharp density front, which separates the vertically homogeneous region from the offshore stratified region, is formed near the coast and propagates offshore with time. Onshore side of the density front, small-scale circulation cells which are aligned in the direction perpendicular to the bottom begin to develop as the near-coast homogeneous region broadens. The surface cooling enhances greatly the development of the surface mixed layer by convective motions due to hydrostatic instability. The convective motions reach far below the hydrostatically unstable layer which is attached to the surface. The small-scale circulation cells are appreciably modified by the convetion cell and the density front develops far offshore compared to the case of no surface cooling. As to the effect of the bottom slope, the offshore distance of the density front increases (decreases) as the bottom slope decreases (increases), which results from the fact that the onshore volume-transport (Ekman transport) of the low-density upper seawater remains almost constant when the wind-stress is maintained constant. It is shown that the bottom slope is an essential factor for the formation of both the density front and the alongshore current when the surface cooling is the only forcing.

  • The cabotage rule has been protecting the domestic industry from foreign competitions as a kind of trade barrier. In the United States, the shipbuilding industry has been maintained with the help of to the strict cabotage operations by reinforcing advantages for domestic crews and ships which are built in the U.S. For most countries, cabotage has been granted legitimacy in their coastal shipping by Low Carbon Transport in terms of economic and emergency reasons. The cabotage rule is required in the stable supply of the seafarers which rely on the legitimate maritime education. This study analyzes Korean cabotage system and the problems with regard to seafarers education. It is found that the resolution is set up the cabotage act such as Jones Act, U.S.

  • The objective of this study is to develop numerical simulation model for analysing the wind speed reduction effect by coastal forest belts. The horizontally homogeneous turbulent flow equations, which are derived from the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method, both above the tree canopy and within the canopy were first formulated, and a first-order closure scheme with the capability of accounting the bulk momentum transport term within the canopy was employed. The averaged equations were solved numerically by finite difference method, FTCS (forward time centered space) scheme. The proposed model was also used to numerically investigate the effects of structural characteristic of forest belt on the wind speed. The effects of maximum leaf area density were evaluated, with the leaf area density of $1.0m^2/m^3$, $2.0m^2/m^3$, $3.0m^2/m^3$, and $4.0m^2/m^3$. Vertical distributions of leaf area, both uniform and varied distribution with a height, were also considered. A comparison of wind profile indicated that there was in good agreements between simulated and measured wind speed. Also, the results showed horizontal wind speed decreased under a height of the tree with increasing maximum leaf area density. In conclusion, in applications where computational efficiency and simplicity are desirable, the proposed numerical model has of great capability to determine the vertical turbulent momentum transport and wind profile in the costal forest belt.

  • The development of a finite difference model for cross-shore sediment transport prediction in the surf tone due to the storm surge event is presented in this paper. Using the inhomogeneous diffusion equation with moving boundaries. the present numerical model is found to be robust and efficient and does not possess a number of restrictions imposed in Kriebel and Dean's(1985) numerical model. Our numerical model is validated through comparison with the analytical solution. the data of a large-scale experiment and the field data of Hurricane Eloise. The Present model if able to predict the averaged volumetric erosion rate of a beach due to the time-varying real storm surge hydrographs and satisfies the conservation of sediment between eroded volume in the onshore region and deposited volume in the offshore region. In addition. the present model is able to reasonably predict the recession of a beach with wide berm and dune. and can describe the change of a breaking point by the offshore deposition. From the sensitivity analysis or the present numerical model with various input parameters, it is concluded that the present numerical model is able to analyze the beach change in a reliable manner including the effects of different sizes of sediments.

  • A number of algal bloom models (red-tide models) have been developed and applied to simulate the redtide growth and decline patterns as the interest on the phytoplankton blooms has been continuously increased. The quantitative error analysis of the model is of great importance because the accurate prediction of the red-tide occurrence and transport pattern can be used to setup the effective mitigations and counter-measures on the coastal ecosystem, aquaculture and fisheries damages. The word "red-tide model" is widely used without any clear definitions and references. It makes the comparative evaluation of the ecological models difficult and confusable. It is highly required to do the performance test of the red-tide models based on the suitable classification and appropriate error analysis because model structures are different even though the same/similar words (e.g., red-tide, algal bloom, phytoplankton growth, ecological or ecosystem models) are used. Thus, the references on the model classification are suggested and the advantage and disadvantage of the models are also suggested. The processes and methods on the performance test (quantitative error analysis) are recommend to the practical use of the red-tide model in the coastal seas. It is suggested in each stage of the modeling procedures, such as verification, calibration, validation, and application steps. These suggested references and methods can be attributed to the effective/efficient marine policy decision and the coastal ecosystem management plan setup considering the red-tide and/or ecological models uncertainty.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the alternatives for improving coostal shipping logistics system to be a logistic hub-nation with a competitive edge. For this purpose, major environmental factors in Northeast Asia and accordingly its effects are analyzed And then the effects of coastal shipping system's development strategy is analysed using Structural Equation Model and Multiple Regression Model. Research results show that three types of coastal shipping development strategy( connected transportation system, structure of coastal shipping system, governmental support policy) will contribute much to being a logistics hub-nation. From the results, some implications are derived as follows. Firstly, environmental-friendly balanced ocean-coastal transport system is required Secondly, a excusive feeder port, Ro-Ro ship & high-speed ship are necessary to establish the one-stop logistics service system Finally, governmental support policy and subsidy(tax-exempted oil & various tax benefits) are required to reactivate lagged coastal shipping system to be a logistic hub-nation with a competitive edge.

  • Under the synoptic scale strong westerly winds flowing over the large steep mountains in the eastern coastal region, the strong downslope wind storms such as internal gravity waves should be generated in the lee-side of mountain. Int he daytime as sea breeze circulation induced by meso-scale thermal forcing from sea toward inland confines to the offshore side of coastal sites due to the eastward internal gravity waves. Thus, surface winds near the coastal seas were relatively weaker than those in the open sea or the inland sites. Evidently, two different kinds of atmospheric circulations such as an internal gravity wave circulation with westerly wind and a sea breeze circulation with both easterly wind near the sea surface and westerly in the upper level were apparently produced. Under this situation the atmospheric pollutants at Kangnung city should be trapped by two different circulations in the opposite directions and resulted in the high concentrations of Total Suspended Particles (TSP) and ozone (O3). At night a meso-scale land breeze from land toward the more intensification of westerly winds in the coastal regions. The concentrations of TSP controled by the strong surface winds blowing from the mountain side toward the coastal sea were relatively higher at night than those in the daytime case and the concentrations of O3 due to the downward transport of ozone from the upper atmosphere toward the surface were also much higher at night than during the day. Consequently, the atmospheric pollutant concentrations in the mountainous coastal region under the downslope wind storms were higher than those after and before the occurrences of wind storms.

  • The relationship between the transport of eggs and larvae of Anchovy (Engraulis japonica) and the oceanic condition in the southern sea of Korea was examined on August and November 1996. In summer (August), when the Tsushima Warm Current is strong near to the coast, the warm waters such as warm streamers from the Tsushima Warm Current intrude into the coastal area, and cyclonic circulations are formed. The warm water intrusions also generate wakes around Komun Island, Sori Island and Koje Island. In the coastal area where the warm water intrusions occur, the nutrients, dissolved oxygen, suspended solid and chlorophyll are concentrated in probably relation to the upwelling concerned with this warm streamer and/or the wakes. Anchovy eggs and larvae are transported to the coastal area by the cyclonic circulations. The hatching and growth of anchovy larvae are increased because of high primary production in the cyclonic circulations. However, as the amount of Copepods which are a main food for anchovy larvae decrease in the coastal area, anchovy larvae seem to move to the Isushima Warm Water area for seeking a prey. In autumn (November), the Tsushima Warm Current is far away from the coast. In this season the warm water intrusions almost disappear, and the small scaled frontal eddies are formed between the coastal water and the Tsushima Warm Water. As the surface water moves towards offshore, few anchovy eggs and larvae were sampled in the survey area. Chemical and biological substances are concentrated in the leftdown sides of the small scaled frontal eddies because of eddy formation.

  • A series of three-dimensional numerical simulations using a hydrodynamic dispersion numerical model is performed to analyze quantitatively impacts of layered heterogeneity of geologic media and groundwater pumping schemes on groundwater flow and salt transport in coastal aquifer systems. A two-layer heterogeneous coastal aquifer system composed of a lower sand layer (aquifer) and an upper clay layer (aquitard) and a corresponding single-layer homogeneous coastal aquifer system composed of an equivalent lumped material are simulated to evaluate impacts of layered heterogeneity on seawater intrusion. In addition, a continuous groundwater pumping scheme and two different periodical groundwater pumping schemes, which withdraw the same amount of groundwater during the total simulation time, are applied to the above two coastal aquifer systems to evaluate impacts of groundwater pumping schemes on seawater intrusion. The results of the numerical simulations show that the periodical groundwater pumping schemes have more significant adverse influences on groundwater flow and salt transport not only in the lower sand layer but also in the upper clay layer, and groundwater salinization becomes more intensified spatially and temporally as the pumping intensity is higher under the periodical groundwater pumping schemes. These imply that the continuous groundwater pumping scheme may be more suitable to minimize groundwater salinization due to seawater intrusion. The results of the numerical simulations also show that groundwater salinization in the upper clay layer occurs significantly different from that in the lower sand layer under the periodical groundwater pumping schemes. Such differences in groundwater salinization between the two adjacent layers may result from layered heterogeneity of the layered coastal aquifer system.

  • Along with container freights keep increasing globally, lots of containers used for inland distribution increase steadily too. In Korea, there are many modes to transfer container freights such as roadway, railroad, coastal shipment. The roadway transportation is the most common but it is considered as the most inefficient mode. This paper studies about reasons that affect to the inefficiency of roadway transport and finds solution to resolve the problem. First backhaul transportation is addressed and some suggested solutions are presented such as construction of inland inspection center or managing efficiently container management. Then mathematical model is used to show the quantitative evaluation of backhaul transport solution.
