  • The Tartar Strait currents of different scales are analysed using results of observations and modeling. The paper focuses on tidal phenomena and general circulation features. It is shown that the areas of maximal tidal currents are located in the regions of stable boundary streams. The stability of the streams under different meteorological conditions and energy concentration in the small areas may be explained by non-linear effects of tide over rough bottom topography.

  • The coastline influenced naturally and artificially changes dynamically. While the long-term change is influenced by the rise in the surface of the sea and the changes in water level of the rivers, the short-term change is influenced by the tide, earthquake and storm. Also, man-made thoughtless development such as construction of embankment and reclaimed land not considering erosion and deformation of coast has been causes for breaking functions of coast and damages on natural environment. In order to manage coastal environment and resources effectively, In this study is intended to analyze and predict erosion in coastal environment and changes in sedimentation quantitatively by detecting changes in coastal line from data collection for satellite images and aerial LiDAR data. The coastal line in 2007 and 2012 was extracted by manufacturing Digital Surface Model (DSM) with Aviation LiDAR materials. For the coastal line in 2009 and 2010, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method was used to extract the KOMPSAT-2 image selected after considering tide level and wave height. The change rate of the coastal line is varied in line with the forms of the observation target but most of topography shows a tendency of being eroded as time goes by. Compared to the relatively monotonous beach of Taean, the gravel and rock has very complex form. Therefore, there are more errors in extraction of coastlines and the combination of transect and shoreline, which affect overall changes. Thus, we think the correction of the anomalies caused by these properties is required in the future research.

  • Representative impacts and effectiveness of surface meteorological observation data assimilation were examined in order to use wind resources estimation around southern coastal area of the Korean Peninsula. The data used in study are observational wind and temperature data at 5 and 41 sites of Regional Meteorological Offices and Automatical Weather Systems, respectively. Observation wind speed data tends to show small effective radius with limited area. Especially assimilation impacts of data observed at peninsula type sites like Yeosu play only around the inside of the peninsula. This limited effective radius for wind speed is caused by the strong correlation between topography and wind speed. And the efficient radius for surface air temperature is larger than that of wind. Data assimilation for observational air temperature is useful to increase the accuracy of wind energy estimation. However assimilation of wind data requires special care in its application due to high sensitivity of topographical complexity.

  • In order to test the accuracy between the modified mild slope equation (MMSE) without evanescent modes and the plane-wave approximation (PA) of eigenfunction expansion method, various numerical results from both models are presented. In this study, analytical solutions of two models are employed, one based on the MMSE derived by Porter (2003) and the other on the scatterer method of PA by Seo (2008a). Judging from direct comparisons against existing results of rapidly varying topography, the PA model gives better predictions of the wave propagation than the MMSE model.

  • Cohesive sediment transport in coastal region has been studied by numerical modeling. A finite element numerical model was setup to simulate hydrodynamics and sediment transport in the coastal region with complex topography. Only physical features of observed sediments has been used to determine erosion rates of bottom sediments together with the previous research results. The simulation results using the simply determined equation of erosion rates were compared with time variations of the observed SS concentration and showed good agreements. In conclusion, this method can be used to estimate transport of cohesive sediment conveniently.

  • To understand the transport of anchovy egg-larvae, an integrated model consisting of a hydrodynamic model and a three-dimensional Lagrangian diffusion model was used for the anchovy Engraulis japornicus egg-larvae trace. Fist, in order to determine the circulation characteristics of the South Sea of Korea, residual flow according to tide, density and wind effect was investigated. In offshore regions, tide-induced residual current tends to flow eastward during the spring tide and westward during the neap tide. Residual flow is irregular due to the bottom topography in the coastal area. No special tendency was apparent in the open sea. Especially, the flow in the offshore regions showed results similar to that of the Tsushima Warm Current. The transport of anchovy egg-larvae is decided the physical properties of sea water. It is estimated that anchovy eggs spawned near the Jeju Island travels offshore, rather than to coastal areas, and grow in the front area between the coastal sea and offshore regions.

  • Though the recent years, large scale structures have been built on offshore for utilization of coastal ocean space as offshore airport and marine terminals. Sometimes, those big scale structures, however, happened to act as significant barriers against waves and severe beach erosion would take place on the coast. The present study deals nearshore topography changes affected by construction of an offshore structure with different distance from the shore. The series of three dimensional movable bed experiments have been examined in detail. Moreover, in order to make clear the relation of nearshore currents and local erosions behind offshore structure, the nearshore currents are calculated by Boussinesq equation model and compared with the same scale condition of the physical model experiments.

  • High swell has been known for the one of the main causes of beach erosion in the east coast of Korea. In this study, coastal topography changes due to high swells are simulated to find its effect on the backshore by using movable bed experiments and numerical experiments. Sea bottom topographical changes due to various incident waves were investigated using CSHORE model in the numerical experiments. Furthermore, the mechanism and the phenomena of beach erosion due to waves and high swells on the foreshore and backshore were analyzed and compared with movable bed hydraulic experiments.

  • Most of finite difference numerical models for the simulation of tsunami propagation developed so for are based on the shallow-water equations which are frequently solved by the leap-frog scheme. If the grid size is properly selected, this numerical scheme gives a correct dispersion effect fur constant water depth. However, if the water depth changes, the dispersion effect of tsunamis can not be accurately considered at every grid point in the whole computational domain. In this study we improved the existing two-dimensional dispersion-correction finite difference numerical scheme. The present scheme satisfies the local dispersion relationships of tsunamis propagating over a slowly varying topography while using uniform grid size and time step. To verify the applicability of the improved numerical model, a tsunami due to 1983 East Sea central earthquake is simulated for Korean harbors with the tide gage records such as Sokcho, Mukho, Pohang and Ulsan in the East Sea. Numerical results of the 1983 tsunami are compared with the measured data and the accuracy of the present numerical model is evaluated.

  • Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in coastal areas is gaining importance as a major transport route that bring nutrients and trace metals into the ocean. This paper describes the analysis of the seasonal changes and spatiotemporal characteristicsthrough the modeling monthly SGD for 35 years from 1986 to 2020 for the Nakdong river basin. In this study, we extracted 210 watersheds and SGD estimation points using the SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) DEM (Digital Elevation Model). The average annual SGD of the Nakdong River basin was estimated to be 466.7 m2/yr from the FLDAS (Famine Early Warning Systems Network Land Data Assimilation System) recharge data of 10 km which is the highest resolution global model applicable to Korea. There was no significant time-series variation of SGD in the Nakdong river basin, but the concentrated period of SGD was expanded from summer to autumn. In addition, it was confirmed that there is a large amount of SGD regardless of the season in coastal area nearby large rivers, and the trend has slightly increased since the 1980s. The characteristics are considered to be related to the change in the major precipitation period in the study area, and spatially it is due to the high baseflow-groundwater in the vicinity of large rivers. This study is a precedentstudy that presents a modeling technique to explore the characteristics of SGD in Korea, and is expected to be useful as foundational information for coastal management and evaluating the impact of SGD to the ocean.
