The study area is a pocket beach which consisted of sandy beach, dune, agricultural land and residential area etc. The coastal dune area is classified to foredune, dune plain, secondary (or back) dune. The foredune area is covered by herbaceous dune plants(ex. Carex kobomugi, Wedelia prostrata, etc.), whereas the dune plain area is covered by herbs and shrubs(Vitex rotundifolia). The most inner area, secondary dune, is planted by pine forest(Pinus thunbergii). The mean size of the beach and dune sediments ranges from 1.1 to $1.8{\Phi}$, which mean these values are higher than normal sediments. Sorting and Skewness is $0.6{\sim}-1.2{\Phi}$ and $-2.7{\sim}1.6{\Phi}$ respectively. We found that the soil formation process in the secondary dune area has been progressed rapidly from the analysis of fine grain content, organic matter content, and CEC.

This study estimates the willingness-to-pay(WTP) for conserving Sindu coastal sand dune and asset value of Sindu coastal sand dune by means of contingent valuation method. CV market scenario is designed to elicitate his/her WTP considering use value and nonuse value of Sindu coastal sand dune. The yearly WTP for Sindu coastal sand dune is 3,059 won(95% C.I. 2,591~3,612 won) in the case of a househodl, therefore amounts to 44 billion won(95% C.I. 37~52 billion won) for the whole nation. We estimate the asset value of Sindu coastal sand dune by 7.5% discount rate to be 587 billion won with 95% confidence interval of 497 to 693 billion won. The direct use value which has accounted for 13.4% is 79 billion won(95% C.I. 67~93 billion won), and the indirect use value which has accounted for 30.2% amounts to 177 billion won(95% C.I. 150~209 billion won), and the option value which has accounted for 19.4% is 114 billion won(95% C.I. 97~135 billion won), and the conservation value which has accounted for 37.0% amounts to 217 billion won(95% C.I. 184~256 billion won).

Coastal dune, as one part of beach system, contributes for beach recovery as well as preventing beach erosion by exchanging sands between beach and dune. Due to high tidal range, the boundary of sand dunes on the west coast of Korean Peninsula is outside the high water line during spring tide and erosion also occurs in high waves during spring high tide. This paper investigates the erosion status of the dunes located in the JangHang beach by analyzing images from camera monitoring system, and tide and wave data observed adjacent to the study site during the passage of 4 typhoons in 2012. It also studies the benefits of camera monitoring images in investigating the dune erosion and analyzing coastal topographic changes.

This research is aimed to investigate the relationship of the effective wind velocity and the morphological change in coastal dune at Sindu-ri in Korea. Sediment flux was estimated by the measurement of elevation change along eight transects deployed in the study area from July 1999 to July 2000. The results of this study indicated that. first. based on the occurrence of morphological change and winds effective for sand movement. two distinct seasons were identified: a season of deposition and that of erosion. During the depositional season, spanning from November to April, effective winds were dominant and sand accumulation occurred mainly in foredunes and sequentially in dune plains. During the erosional season, from May through October, volume change was small and erosion or sand loss occurred mostly at the dunefoot of foredunes. Secondly, the research revealed that the sediment budget of Sindu coastal dune turned out to be surplus on the whole, but there are some regional differences. Deficit budgets were observed partly in secondary dunes. The utmost northern part of Sindu coastal dune was provided with abundant sand, whereas the central and northern parts were poorly supplied.
Background: Ecophysiological characteristics of Rosa rugosa were analyzed under different environmental factors from May to October 2022. Photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll content, leaf water content (LWC), osmolality, carbohydrate content, and total ion content were measured to compare the physiological characteristics of R. rugosa at two study sites (i.e., in large pots and in the Goraebul coastal sand dune area). Results: When R. rugosa was exposed to high temperatures, photosynthetic parameters including net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) in both experiment areas declined. In addition, severe photoinhibition occurs when R. rugosa is continuously exposed to high photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and because of this, relatively low Y(II) (i.e., the quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in photosystem II [PSII]) and high Y(NO) (i.e., the quantum yield of non-regulated, non-photochemical energy loss in PSII) in the R. rugosa of the pot were observed. As the high Y(NPQ) (i.e., the quantum yield of regulated non-photochemical energy loss in PSII) of R. rugosa in the coastal sand dune, they dissipated the excessed photon energy through the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) mechanism when they were exposed to relatively low PAR and low temperature. Rosa rugosa in the coastal sand dune has higher chlorophyll a and carotenoid content. The high chlorophyll a + b and low chlorophyll a/b ratios seemed to optimize light absorption in response to low PAR. High carotenoid content played an important role in NPQ. As a part of the osmotic regulation in response to low LWCs, R. rugosa exposed to high temperatures and continuously high PAR used soluble carbohydrates and ions to maintain high osmolality. Conclusions: We found that Fv/Fm was lower in the potted plants than in the coastal sand dune plants, indicating the vulnerability of R. rugosa to high temperatures and PAR levels. We expect that the suitable habitat range for R. rugosa will shrink and move to north under climate change conditions.
Luminescence dating of a coastal dune from the Shindu dunefield on the T'aean Peninsula shows that deposition of the dune structure began about 500-600 years ago. The lower section of the dune has remained stable since then but the upper part yields an age of about 30 years, suggesting reactivation or additional deposition since the 1970's. The two samples that were collected from the lower part of the dune at depths of 3.5 m and 2.0 m below the surface differ by an age interval of about 50-70 years. This indicates a net depositional rate of around 2.5 cm a year which is relatively slow for a coastal dune. Whilst only one dune structure has been dated for the time being and even though the dunefield was probably established much earlier in the Holocene, the OSL ages obtained demonstrate that some dunes in the area could be younger than 1000 years. Such chronologies point to a dynamic environment where the dune structures are not permanently fixed. Sedimentological properties of the dune sands are consistent with those of particles initially deposited under subaqueous conditions and then later transported by wind.
The aim of this study is to provide a fundamental data which can be applied to management conservation, and restoration of coastal sand dune vegetation by determining the classification and distribution of community, and ecological characteristics of the habitat. This research was performed by the Braun-Blanquet's method. The coastal sand dune vegetation of Uido (I.) was composed with 9 communities as follows : Vitex rotundifolia community, Zoysia macrostachya community, Carex kobomugi community, Iachaemum anthephoroides community, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii community, Carex pumila community, Calystegia soldanella community Messerschmidia sibirica community and Pinus thunbergii community, the evergreen needle-leaved forest. The constancy degree showed high in Calystegia soldanella (77%), Vitex rotundifolia (74%), Carex kobomugi (66%), Zoysia macrostachya (50%) and Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii (47%). However the highest constancy degree Calystegia soldanella has, it turned out to have low net contribution degree (NCD) in each community. In terms of the distribution and growth feature of the composition species in the coastal sand dune, Vitex rotundifolia, Carex kobomuri and Zoysia macrostachya were widely distributed from unstable sand dune to stable one but Iachaemum anthephoroides and Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii were mainly found at the stable sand dune. Carex kobomugi was especially dominant at the unstable sand dune where the sand continued to be deposited. On the other hand, Carer pumila and Messerschmidia sibirica showed regional distributions around fresh water.
Management system of coastal erosion-control forest in Japan together with coast sand dune fixation and stabilization were investigated and analyzed to introduce to Korean researchers the many-sided importance and function of coastal forest and its change from the standpoint of social value. In this study some suggestions and ideas were proposed for establishment of coastal forest including seaside protection forest characteristics and tree species for coastal dune fixation, based on the analysis of data which were collected from the seaside protection forest in Okinawa Prefecture in Japan.

The paleovegetation environments relevant to the geomorphic properties were constructed by pollen analysis in the coastal dune (S1) and marginal trench (S4) of Ssangho at the Osan-ri site. The organic sand layer in the coastal dune (S1) accumulated on the remains of the Neolithic Age correlates to approximately 4,000 yr BP and the pollen zone can be divided with a boundary of approximately 2,000 yr BP. Pinus thunbergii definitely dominated and a small quantity of Quercus. Pollenzone I can be characterized by the dominance of AP and Compositae. The pollenzone II as the dominant period of NAP like Gramineae, Artemisia and Fagopyrum shows the properties of agricultural period. During the times of accumulation of upper organic layer in alluvial plain (S4), broad-leaved trees such as Alnus were dominant and Compositae, Gramineae, Artemisia, Typha, Umbelliferae and Persicaria show the high occurrence rates. The pollen composition of S4 indicates the agricultural activities with the dominance of NAP and correlates to the pollenzone II of the coastal dune (S1).

This study shows that coastal sand dunes are negatively affected by coastal forests. In South Korea, planting pine trees on the dunes has been carried out to stabilize the dune landscapes and protect residential areas from coastal disasters since the 20th century. However, this strategy could reduce the resilience of dunes. In this study, we selected three monitoring sites with automated weather stations to compare the geomorphological and environmental characteristics between tree-covered and grass-covered dunes at Sohwang-ri, Boryeong-si, Chungnam Province for three years. In addition, we monitored the rates of erosion and deposition using eight pins along the dune crests. We found that the forest affected both wind velocity and direction, resulting in decreased blown sand supply to the dunes in front of the forest. The velocity of the strong winds faster than 5 m/s diminished to 10%-30% of the control sites, and the direction of northwesterly wind were skewed to the north by about 6°. Sand deposition occurred at about 15-20 m away from the pine forest and the amount was only 1/10 of the deposition within the grass-covered dunes. This study suggests that planting trees in coastal dunes is an undesirable strategy with negative impacts on the landscape management.
