포크너-스캔 경계층유동에서의 다분산 입자부착에 대한 연구 (Deposition of Polydisperse Particles in a Falkner-Skan Wedge Flow)

  • Deposition of flame-synthesized silica particles onto a target is utilized in optical fiber preform fabrication processes. The particles are convected and deposited onto the target. Falkner-Skan wedge flow was chosen as the particle laden flow. Typically the particles are polydisperse in size and follow a lognormal size distribution. Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, and coagulation of the particles were considered and effects of these phenomena on particle deposition were studied. A moment model was developed in order to predict the particle number density and the particle size distribution simultaneously. Particle deposition with various wedge configurations was examined for conditions selected for a typical VAD process. When coagulation was considered, mean particle size and its standard deviation increased and particle number density decreased, compared to the case without coagulation. These results proved the fact that coagulation effect expands particle size distribution. The results were discussed with characteristics of thermal and diffusion boundary layers. As the boundary layers grow in thickness, overall temperature and concentration gradients decrease, resulting in decrease of deposition rate and increase of particle residence time in the flow and thus coagulation effect.

저탁도 해수원수 특성에 적합한 응집 - 여과 공정의 최적화 (Optimization of Coagulation and Media Filtration Process for Low Turbidity Seawater)

  • 본 연구는 RO 해수담수화 전처리 공정으로써 응집 및 여과공정에 대하여 수행되었다. RO 시스템은 충분하고 안정적인 전처리를 통하여 RO 막오염을 완화 할 수 있는 우수한 수질을 공급할 수 있어야 한다. 본 실험은 RO 막 공정의 전처리로서 다양한 응집제 주입량, 응집 교반 강도 및 시간, 탁도, 여과속도 실험 조건을 사용하여 응집과 여과공정의 효과를 조사하기 위하여 수행되었다. 본 연구 결과 적합한 RO 공급수로 적절한 SDI 값을 나타내기 위한 최적 전처리 조건은 응집 pH 6.5, 탁도 4 NTU 이상 그리고 여재 충진 높이가 550 mm 이상인 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 응집교반 강도, 응집제 주입농도와 여과속도는 여과효율에 비교적 큰 영향을 미치지 않은 것으로 나타났다.

가압펌프에 의해 해체된 플럭이 가압식 막여과 공정의 제거효율 및 막오염에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Coagulated Flocs Broken by the Pressure Pump on Removal Rate and Membrane Fouling of Pressurized MF process)

  • 가압식 MF공정의 전처리공정으로 침전지가 없는 혼화/응집공정에서 적정응집제 투입농도선정 및 유기물 제거성능을 평가하였다. 전처리 공정에서 생성된 플럭이 가압펌프의 임펠러에 의해 해체됨을 확인하였으며 원수탁도가 10 NTU 이하로 유입이 될 때, 혼화/응집조와 펌프후단에서 플럭형성을 위한 최적응집제 투입량은 4 mg/L (as PACl 17%)이었다. 이때의 DOC 제거율은 평균 43%이었으며, 응집제투입량을 계속적으로 증가시켜 8 mg/L (as PACl 17%)로 투입을 하였을 때, DOC 제거율은 평균 48%를 나타내어 제거율은 크게 개선되지 않았다. 전처리가 없는 PVDF 가압식 MF공정의 TMP는 0.54 bar에서 운영이 되었으며, 혼화/응집 전처리 공정을 적용하여 운영 시 TMP는 0.41 bar로 안정적인 운영이 가능하였다.

다중 유기물 특성 지표를 활용한 용존 유기물질 응집/침전 제거효율 예측 (Prediction of Coagulation/Flocculation Treatment Efficiency of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) Using Multiple DOM Characteristics)

  • The chemical composition and molecular weight characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) exert a profound influence on the efficiency of organic matter removal in water treatment systems, acting as efficiency predictive indicators. This research evaluated the primary chemical and molecular weight properties of DOM derived from diverse sources, including rivers, lakes, and biomasses, and assessed their relationship with the efficiency of coagulation/flocculation treatments. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal efficiency through coagulation/flocculation exhibited significant correlations with DOM's hydrophobic distribution, the ratio of humic-like to protein-like fluorescence, and the molecular weight associated with humic substances (HS). These findings suggest that the DOC removal rate in coagulation/flocculation processes is enhanced by a higher presence of HS in DOM, an increased influence of externally sourced DOM, and more presence of high molecular weight compounds. The results of this study further posit that the efficacy of water treatment processes can be more accurately predicted when considering multiple DOM characteristics rather than relying on a singular trait. Based on major results from this study, a predictive model for DOC removal efficiency by coagulation/flocculation was formulated as: 24.3 - 7.83 × (fluorescence index) + 0.089 × (hydrophilic distribution) + 0.102 × (HS molecular weight). This proposed model, coupled with supplementary monitoring of influent organic matter, has the potential to enhance the design and predictive accuracy for coagulation/flocculation treatments targeting DOC removal in future applications.

Poly-γ-glutamic acid(PGA)를 이용한 폐수의 응집특성 (The Coagulation Characteristics of Wastewater Using Poly-γ-glutamic Acid)

  • Poly-${\gamma}$-glutamic acid (${\gamma}-PGA$), which is extracted from fermented soybeans, is a high molecular weight, adhesive, and negatively charged(anionic) polymer. Recently, ${\gamma}-PGA$ has gained attention due to its potential as polymer. The objectives of this study were to examine the applicability of ${\gamma}-PGA$ as a coagulant and/or a coagulant aid, to evaluate the efficiency of ${\gamma}-PGA$ for the removal of Organic and Ammonium substance in wastewater treatment. The effect of coagulation was evaluated for the removal of SS and organic matter using poly aluminum chloride(PACI) as well as newly developed ${\gamma}-PGA$. The maximum COD removal rate of 63% and the SS of 78% were occurred at the dosage of 50mg/L ${\gamma}-PGA$ only. The most effective removal for particulate and organic matter was occured when both PACI and ${\gamma}-PGA$ were applied at the rate of 20:1(10mg/L PACI and 0.5mg/L ${\gamma}-PGA$). When mixed with PACI, only small portion of ${\gamma}-PGA$ was enough to improve removal efficiencies of organic and particulate matter in wastewater. This result showed the positive potential of ${\gamma}-PGA$ as a new coagulant materials for wastewater treatment.

TPH와 6가 크롬으로 오염된 지하수 처리를 위한 실내 실험 (Treatability Study on the Remediation Groundwater Contaminated by TPH Cr6+ : Lab-Scale Experiment)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 TPH 또는 $Cr^{6+}$이 함유된 오염 지하수의 처리 가능성을 평가하는 데 있다. 오일과 물의 분리, 용존 공기 부유 (DAF), 응고 및 침전, 모래와 활성탄으로 각각 여과를 위한 실험실 규모 테스트가 수행되었다. 총 40 분간의 분리 시간 동안 오일과 물의 분리 시험을 2 회 실시한 결과 TPH 제거율은 90.2 %였다. 높은 농도의 TPH 샘플에 대한 DAF 테스트의 경우, TPH 제거율은 미세 기포 크기의 변화에 따라 크게 변하지 않았다. 그러나 낮은 TPH 샘플에 대한 테스트는 미세 기포가 작을수록 TPH 제거율이 증가함을 보여준다. DAF 테스트를 위해 응집제를 샘플에 첨가했을 때 TPH 제거율은 12.3 % 증가했다. DAF에 의한 SS 제거율은 $16{\sim}40{\mu}m$에서 97.9 %였으며 미세 기포의 크기가 감소함에 따라 증가했다. 지하수에서 $Cr^{6+}$의 제거를 평가하기 위해 응집 및 침전 시험을 수행했다. $FeSO_4$ 투여량을 증가하였을때 응집 및 침전 공정에서 $Cr^{6+}$ 제거율이 증가하였다. 필터 매체에서 활성탄의 비율이 높을수록 여과공정에서 TPH 제거율이 증가한다. 여과에 의한 SS 제거율은 DAF 공정 시험 결과와 비슷한 96.7 %였다. 여과 과정은 TPH와 SS 농도가 감소하였다. 모래의 크기가 $425{\sim}850{\mu}m$이고 활성탄과 모래의 비율이 50:50일때 최적의 처리효율을 나타냈다.

응집(凝集)에 의한 탁도물질(濁度物質) 및 용존(溶存) 유기물질(有機物質)의 동시제거(同時除去)에 대한 연구(硏究) (Co-precipitation of Turbidity and Dissolved Organic Matters by Coagulation)

  • Various humic substances are widely distributed in natural water body, such as rivers and lakes and cause the yellowish or brownish color to water. The evidence that humic substances are precursors of THMs formation in chlorinated drinking water has been reported m the Jiteratures. For the reason of public health as well as aesthetics, needs for humic substances removal have been increased in the conventional water treatment processes. In this research, the characteristics of aluminium coagulation of humic acids and humic acids were investigated. The optimum pH and coagulants dosage to remove these materials simultaneously by coagulation were alto studied. The results are as followed; 1. UV-254 absorptiometry for measuring the concentration of aquatic humic acids showed good applicability and stable results. 2. The optimal pH range for humic acids removal by aluminium coagulation was 5 to 5.5, however, an increase in aluminium coagulant dosage could enhance the removal rate of humic acids in the wide pH range. 3. Coprecipitation of humic acids in the typical pH range of 6.5 to 8 in water treatment processes may require the sweep coagulation mechanism with the excess aluminium coagulant dosage. 4. Using PAC(poly aluminium chloride) or PASS(poly aluminium silica sulfate) as coagulants was able to expand the operating range for removing humic acids. 5. From the coagulation of humic substances(UV-254) and turbidity at pH range of 5.5 - 6.0 and alum dose of 86 ppm, the removal efficiency of turbidity from the reservoir water was above 90% and that of UV-254 was above 70%. 6. By using the reservoir water, the optimum condition of rapid mixing for simultaneous removal of turbidity and UV-254 absorbance was pH of 5.8 and LAS dose of 86 ppm, in this study.

In Vivo Experimental Study on the Effects of Fluid in Increasing the Efficiency of Radiofrequency Ablation

  • Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is the most widely used and studied method internationally for the local treatment of liver tumors. However, the extension of coagulation necrosis in one RFA procedure is limited and incomplete coverage of the damaged area can lead to a high local recurrence rate. Objective: In this study, we compared the effects of different solutions in enhancing hepatic radiofrequency by establishing a rabbit VX2 liver cancer model. We also determined the optimal solution to maximise effects on the extent of RFA-induced coagulation necrosis. Methods: Thirty VX2 tumor rabbits were randomly assigned to five groups: group A, RFA alone; group B, RFA with anhydrous ethanol injection; group C, RFA with 5% hypertonic saline injection; group D, RFA with lidocaine injection; and group E, RFA with a mixed solution. Routine ultrasound examinations and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of the ablation areas were performed after RFA. Then, we measured the major axis and transverse diameter and compared the areas of coagulation necrosis induced by RFA. Results: The mean ablation area range increased in groups B, C and especially E, and the scopes were greater compared with group A. Preoperative application of anhydrous ethanol, hypertonic saline, lidocaine and the mixed solution (groups B, C, D and E, respectively) resulted in larger coagulation necrosis areas than in group A (p<0.05). Among the groups, the coagulation necrosis areas in group E was largest, and the difference was statistically significant compared with other groups (p<0.05). Pathological findings were consistent with imaging results. Conclusions: A mixture of dehydrated alcohol, hypertonic saline and lidocaine injected with RFA increases the extent of coagulation necrosis in the liver with a single application, and the mixed solution is more effective than any other injection alone.

Pilot Study Analysis of Three Different Processes in Drinking Water Treatment

  • In this study, three pilot-scale plants with the capacity 30 $m^3$/day were designed and set up to treat reservoir water for the production of drinking water. Three treatment processes were compared in the pilot testing: process 1 (coagulation- flocculation- sedimentationsand filtration- ozone- BAC); process 2 (coagulation- flocculation- sedimentation- microfiltration-ozone- BAC); and process 3 (coagulation- flocculation- sedimentation- sand filtration- GAC). The quality of water has been evaluated on the basis of selected parameters such as turbidity, color, consumption of $KMnO_4$, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), geosmin and 2-MIB. A detailed assessment of performance was carried out during a five months operation. Process 2 was found to have better removal efficiency of DOC, THMFP, geosmin and 2-MIB than process 1 and process 3 under identical conditions, although the removal rate of color was found to be the same in the three cases.
