Flocculation and flotation are used as pretreatment steps prior to the reverse osmosis (RO) process. During seawater treatment, high temperature can change the water chemistry of seawater during the process of coagulation. It also affects bubble volume concentration (BVC) and bubble characteristics. Coagulants such as alum and ferric salts at $40^{\circ}C$ can also change flux rates in the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) process. In this study, the bubble characteristics in dissolved air flotation (DAF), used as a SWRO pretreatment process, were studied in synthetic seawater at $20^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. The flux of an RO membrane was monitored after dosing the synthetic seawater with coagulants at different temperatures. Results showed that BVC increases as the operating pressure increases and as the salt concentration decreases. The bubble size released at $40^{\circ}C$ is far smaller than that at $20^{\circ}C$The addition of a ferric salt is effective for turbidity removal in synthetic seawater at $20^{\circ}C$; it is more effective than alum. When synthetic seawater was dosed with a ferric salt, the RO membrane flux increased by 27 % at $40^{\circ}C$.
Several kinds of coagulants such as aluminum sulfate, PAC, PASS are being used to treat drinking water resulting in residual aluminum ions in the water. Recently, it has been reported that high intake of aluminum ion may cause neurological dieseases such as Alzheimer's diesease and presenile dementia. Because of the possible adverse effect, WHO and EEC recommand to regulate residual aluminum. The autorities in Korea also has plan of regulating residual alunimum from 1995. But there is not enough information about the range of residual aluminum ion concentration when the aluminum sulfate, PAC or PASS has been used as a coagulant. Therefore the study has been conducted to find out the range of residual aluminum ion concentration after using aluminum sulfate, PAC, and PASS. Furthermore the effect of turbidity and alkalinity have been investigated. The experimental results are summarized as; 1. Most of the residual aluminum ion concentrations were within $10^{-6}$ and $10^{-5}mole/l$. Three coagulants have not showed any considerable difference in the residual aluminum concentration up to 50 NTU. However PAC has showed the least residual aluminum in high turbidity water over 100 NTU. 2. The low alkalinity water having 25mg/l as $CaCO_3$ has showed less residual aluminum than the water having 50mg/l alkalinity. However, the difference was not significcant. 3. Even the lowest residual aluminum concentration was over 0.05mg/l. Therefore the process to reduce residual aluminum would be necessary in water treatment plants.
Wastewater treatment plants need to reduce phosphorus in order to meet increasingly stringent regulations on phosphorus. This study evaluated the feasibility of dolomite as a coagulation aid to enhance phosphorus removal from secondary treated wastewater by chemical coagulation. Standard jar tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of dolomite addition on a coagulation process for phosphorus removal and to determine the optimum doses of coagulants and dolomite. Coagulants used with dolomite yielded a significant improvement in phosphorus removal and reduced total phosphorus concentrations below 0.02 mg/L in wastewater effluent. Dolomite has played an important role in enhancing phosphate adsorption and increasing pH, as a coagulation aid. The maximum removal efficiency of phosphorus in this study was yielded at 25 mg/l of dolomite and 20 mg Al/L of PAC dose. However, considering economic aspects, the optimum doses of dolomite and PAC were 10 mg/L and 15mg Al/L, respectively. Consequently, dolomite, a coagulation aid, can be used in coagulation processes to enhance the removal of phosphorus.
A study was carried out in order to investigate the removal efficiencies and removal characteristics of heaw metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu in raw water by one of conventional water treatment processes. The coagulants used in this study were Alum and PAC. Three kinds of water samples were provided: kaolin water, kaolin water mixed with humic acid and raw water from Han River mixed with suspended matter deposited on raw water inlet pipe. Heaw metals were added to the water samples with their respective turbidity, and jar tests were performed. In the results from heaw metal removal studies, lead might be adsorbed or exchanged on the particle surface (SS) rather than react with organic matter added. Cadmium was affected on the dissolved organic matter. Chromium was affected by the both dissolved organic matter and SS concentration, and the restabilization and the enmeshment appeared at moderate (50~80 NTU) and high (100 NTU) turbidity as defined in this experimenL The removal efficiency of copper was relatively little affected by the dissolved organic matter but by SS concentration in comparison with other heavy metals. In these studies as to the raw water turbidities and concentration of heaw metals, it is proved out that the removal efficiency on heaw metals in both cases of PAC and Alum as coagulants was not significantly different.
Three kinds of soybean curd were prepared with three coagulants such as calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and glucono delta lactone. The mineral contents of the three soybean curds were analyzed before soaking and after various lengths of soaking(1/2 hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 2 hours(water changed after 1/2 hour)). Results therefrom were as follows: 1. Before the three soybean cured were soaked, their moisture contents were 79-83g/%. The ash contents were 5.04g% in the soybean curd made with CaCl_{2}4.42g/% in the soybean curd prepared with MgCl_{2} and 3.86g/% in the soybean curd coagulated by glucono delta lactone. an analysis of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous contents showed that each element had a greater concentration in the soybean curds made with divalent mineral salts than in the soybean curd made with acid. 2. Changes taking place in the mineral contents of the soybean curds according to different soaking times were examined. The mineral contents tended to decease in process of soaking time. The soybean curds showed the highest rate of mineral dissolution after one hour of soaking, and then they tended to reabsorb minerals. When the soybean curds were soaked I freshly changed water for one hour and 30 minutes, their mineral contents indicated a greater diminishing trend but no significant difference was noticed among the different kinds of soybean curd. In case coagulant has been used excessively, it is necessary to soak the bean curds for about one hour to get the coagulant dissolved.
The objectives of this paper are the characterization of the pretreatment of wastewater by microfiltration (MF) membranes for river maintenance and water recycling. This is done by investigation of the proper coagulation conditions, such as the types and doses of coagulants, mixing conditions (velocity gradients and mixing periods), pH, etc., using jar tests. The effluent water from a pore control fiber (PCF) filter located after the secondary clarifier at Kang-byeon Sewage Treatment Plant (K-STP) was used in these experiments. Two established coagulants, aluminum sulfate (Alum) and poly aluminum chloride (PAC), which are commonly used in sewage treatment plants to treat drinking water, were used in this research. The results indicate that the optimal coagulation velocity gradients (G) and agitation period (T) for both Alum and PAC were 200-250 $s^{-1}$ and 5 min respectively, but the coagulation efficiencies for both Alum and PAC were lower at low values of G and T. For a 60 min filtration period on the MF, the flux efficiencies ($J/J_0$ (%)) at the K-STP effluent that were coagulated by PAC and Alum were 92.9 % and 79.9 %, respectively, under the same coagulation conditions. It is concluded that an enhanced membrane process is possible by effective filtration of effluent at the K-STP using the coagulation-membrane separation process.
This study was surveyed to examine the removable ability of residual aluminum with the coagulants(LAS, PAC) and the auxiliary coagulants(Loess, R-calmont) on raw water. The leaching test of the auxiliary coagulant showed that the loess contained a lot of Al, Fe and Mn. On the reverse, the R-calmont was a little. Most of the loess were composed of $SiO_{2}$ 53.25%, $Al_{2}O_{3}$ 29.28%, $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ 10.73% and Si/Al ratio was 3.08. In using both LAS vs. loess and PAC vs. loess as the coagulated material, the removal of residual aluminum was the highest as 96.3%, 96.6% respectively, and that of the residual turbidity was 95.0% when PAC vs. R-calmont was dosed 0.2mg/L. Also, loess showed better than R-calmont in the removable efficiency of aluminum and turbidity. When the setting time of auxiliary coagulant was input ar the same time with coagulant, the removal aluminum was the highest as 93.3% to 96.6%.
The overall objective of this research was to find out the role of rapid mixing conditions in the species of hydrolyzed Al(III) formed by different Al(III) coagulants. When an Al(III) salt is added to water, monomers, polymers, or solid precipitates may form. Different Al(III) coagulants (alum and PACl) show to have different Al species distribution over a rapid mixing condition. During the rapid mixing period, for alum, formation of dissolved Al(III) (monomer and polymer) increases, but for PACl, precipitates of $Al(OH)_{3(s)}$. increases rapidly. Also, for alum, higher mixing speed favoured Al(III) polymers formation over precipitates of $Al(OH)_{3(s)}$ but for PACl, higher mixing speed formed more precipitates of $Al(OH)_{3(s)}$. At A/D and sweep condition, both $Al(OH)_{3(s)}$ and dissolved Al(III) (monomer and polymer) exist, concurrent reactions by both mechanism appear to cause simultaneous precipitation.
Recently the Government has announced updated water quality standards for wastewater treatment effluent (become effective in 2012). That includes highly enforced regulations for T-P, BOD and COD, and a large budget, in particular for phosphorus removal, was set by the Ministry of environment. Chemical coagulation destabilizes colloidal particles so that particles grow to larger flocs, and solid particles are removed by solid-liquid separation. The efficiency of chemical coagulation depends on a various factors, including coagulant types and costs, construction and operation costs for the treatment facilities and so on. The proper selection should be based on the treatment efficiency of coagulants and underlying costs. The current research was to evaluate the treatment efficiencies of coagulants on a variety of wastewater influents and to develop saturation curves for several water quality parameters. Typical $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were tested under a range of coagulant concentrations. The pollutant removal efficiencies of chemical treatment both for the $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were especially high for T-P, followed by SS, BOD and COD. Correlation test also proved the highest relationship between SS and T-P.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the prechlorination on algal removal by application of a varying amount of different coagulants, such as LAC, PAC, PACS following the process of coagulation and sedimentation of algae in the Nakdong River. The samples used as a source for the raw water of the Nakdong River were collected from the D Water Purification Plant in Taegu city. With the application of the process of prechlorination, the removal rate of the algae was increased from 10~25% for Synedra spp., 20~35% for diatoms and 4~17% for turbidity. Generally, the removal rate of the algae was increased with the increase of the concentration of the coagulants. The PAC and PACS showed 5% higher removal rate for turbidity as compared to the LAS. On the hand, LAS showed 12% higher removal rate for Synedra spp. as compared to the PAC and PACS. The variations in the removal rate of diatoms with the change of coagulant were not significant. In conclusion, the application of LAS, polymeric coagulant and chlorination for at least 20 minutes could be considered as a reliable treatment process for the removal of source water containing a variety of algae.
