  • A ship's screw-propeller produces thrust by rotation and, at the same time, generates rotational flow behind the propeller. This rotational flow has no contribution to the generation of thrust, but instead produces energy loss. By recovering part of the lost energy in the rotational flow, therefore, it is possible to improve the propulsion efficiency. The contra-rotating propeller (CRP) system is the representing example of such devices. Unfortunately, however, neither a design method nor a full-scale performance prediction procedure for the CRP system has been well established yet. The authors have long performed studies on the CRP system, and some of the results from the authors' studies shall be presented and discussed.

  • Effect of deposition conditions on the magnetic properties of SmCo/Cr prepared by a RF magnetron sputtering method was studied. We obtained the maximum coercivity of 3.2 kOe in the sample of Cr(50 nm)/SmCo(40 nm, 50W, 20 mT)/Cr(150 nm, 100 W, 30 mT). The coercivity of the SmCo/Cr depends largely on the roughness of the Cr underlayer and the composition of SmCo. The roughness of the Cr underlayer increased with increasing the Ar pressure and thickness, and promoted the isolation of SmCo grains which resulted in an enhanced coercivity. The composition of the SmCo was changed with RF power and Ar pressure due to the mass difference between Sm and Co and the resputtering phenomena. The maximum coercivity was obtained in the composition of about 20 at.% Sm. The mechanism of magnetization reversal of the present SmCo films changed from domain wall motion to domain rotation as the RF power and the Ar pressure increase. This was though to be due to the defects, such as the roughness of Cr surface, porous column boundaries etc., which inhibit domain wall movement.

  • The magnetic and magneto-optical properties of the Tb/Co multilayers as a function of the layer thickness and the ratio of Tb/Co thicknesses were studied. When the thickness of Tb layer was $12{\AA}$, the maximum perpendicular anisotropy energy and the maximum thickness ratio which displays the perpendicular anisotropy were obtained. This result indicated that the Tb-Tb and Co-Co pairs as well as the Tb-Co pairs contribute to the perpendicular anisotropy. The Kerr rotation angle, $({\theta}_k)$ was proportional to the perpendicular anisotropy energy and was inversely proportional to the average spin dispersion angle, $(\alpha)$. The maximum $({\theta}_k)$ of $0.28^{\circ}$ was obtained in the film of $12{\AA}$ Tb and the thickness ratio of 1.55. The abnormal hysteresis loops were appeared during the aging treatment because the coercivity difference between the Co layer and the Tb layer was increased by the preferential oxidation of Tb.

  • Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayered thin films for perpendicular magnetic recording media were fabricated by sput¬tering method and the effects of the sputtering pressure during the formation of Pd or Pt underlayers on the magnetization behavior and coercivity of the multilayers were investigated. It was found that the coercivity of Co/Pd multilayers was strongly dependent on the sputtering pressure of underlayer and could be enhanced to a large extent merely by increasing the sputtering pressure of underlayer, while in case of Co/Pt films, the degree of coercivity enhancement by controlling the sputtering pressure of underlayer was almost negligible. Coercivity variation of Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayers with the underlayer material and deposition pressure of underlayer could be well explained in terms of the interface roughness of multilayer films induced by underlayer topology, which could also be correlated to the change of perpendicular anisotropy energy and magnetic reversal feature with the sputtering pressure of underlayer. Kerr rotation angle was hardly affected by the preparation conditions of underlayers.

  • Friction stir spot welding between 5454 aluminum alloy sheets with the different thicknesses of 1.4 and 1.0 mm was performed. In the welding process, the tool for welding was rotated ranging from 500 to 2500, and plunged to the depth of 1.8 mm under a constant tool plunge speed of 100 mm/min. And then, the rotating tool was maintained at the plunge depth during the dwell time ranging from 0 to 7 sec. The pull-out speed of the rotating tool was 100 mm/min. The increase of tool rotation speed resulted in the change of the macrostructure of friction-stir-spot-welded zone, especially the geometry of welding interface. The results of the tensile shear test showed that the total displacement and toughness of the welds were increased with the increase of the tool rotation speed, although the maximum tensile shear load was decreased. However, the change in the dwell time at the plunge depth of the tool did not produce the remarkable variation in the macrostructure and mechanical properties of the welds. In all cases, the average hardness in friction-stir-spot-welded zone was higher than that of the base metal zone. By the friction stir spot welding technique, the welds with the excellent mechanical properties than the mechanically-clinched joints could be obtained.

  • This study proposes a new technique to design and control of robot hand gripper for assembling and disassembling of a machine parts. The motion equation describing dynamics of the manipulators and object together with geometric constraint is formulated by Lagrange-Euler's equation. And the problems of controlling both the grasping force and the rotation angle of the grasped object under the constraints are analyzed. The effect of geometric constraints and a method of computer simulation for overall system is verified. Finally, it is illustrated that even in case of there exists a sensory feedback from sensing data of the rotational angle of the object to command inputs control of joint and this feedback connection from sensing data to control grasping of machinery parts.

  • L1448-MM, known as a class 0 YSO with a prominent outflow, was observed with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) aboard Herschel Space Observatory by the key program, DIGIT (Dust, Ice, Gas in Time, PI: Neal Evans). The PACS covers various molecular and atomic line transitions such as CO, OH, $H_2O$, [OI], and [CII] at wavelengths from 55 to 210 ${\mu}m$. The line emission of $H_2O$, [OI], mid-J CO, and the OH fundamental transition distributes along the outflow direction although high-J CO and other OH emission peaks at the central spatial pixel. According to our excitation analysis, the CO gas has two temperature components: 300 K and 750 K, which are attributed to PDR and shock, respectively. However, the $H_2O$ gas with the rotation temperature ($T_{rot}$) of 200 K seems only affected by shock. Interestingly, the relative strength of OH transitions suggests the IR pumping process in L1448-MM. We also mapped L1448-MM in CO J=2-1 with the SRAO 6m telescope to compare with the FIR line transition maps.

  • Many researchers have attempted to recognize three-dimensional faces using feature points extracted from two-dimensional facial photographs. However, due to the limit of flat photographs, it is very difficult to recognize faces rotated more than 15 degrees from original feature points extracted from the photographs. As such, it is difficult to create an algorithm to recognize faces in multiple angles. In this paper, it is proposed a new algorithm to recognize three-dimensional face recognition based on feature points extracted from a flat photograph. This method divides into six feature point vector zones on the face. Then, the vector value is compressed and expanded according to the rotation angle of the face to recognize the feature points of the face in a three-dimensional form. For this purpose, the average of the compressibility and the expansion rate of the face data of 100 persons by angle and face zone were obtained, and the face angle was estimated by calculating the distance between the middle of the forehead and the tail of the eye. As a result, very improved recognition performance was obtained at 30 degrees of rotated face angle.

  • A Continous wave tunable $CO_2$ laser which is the slow axial flow type was construccted for the optical pumping of methyl alcohol ($CH_3OH$) laser. The reflective grating of 100 grooveslmm and 10.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ blaze wavelength was used to select wavelength. We have investigated continous outpu: power characteristics, and then have compared tuned output power profile with the gain curve of $CO_2$ laser. The optimum condition for maxium power was found at the gas mixing ratio 1 : 3 : 10 for $CO_2: N_2$ and He. under this condition the flow rate, pressure of lasing gas and discharge current are 9.5 llmin. 14 torr, and 55 mA respectively. The maxium output power was 55 Wlm. Output power of single wavelength operation was measured on 60 individual rotation vibration transitions in the P and K branches of the 9.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ band and 10.4$\mu\textrm{m}$ band in $CO_2$. The output power profile obtained from each band is well consistent with the gain curve of $CO_2$ laser and maxium tuned output power was 20 watt.
