A New Species of Cellular Slime Molds from Korea, Dictyostelium floridum sp. nov. (한국산 세포성 점균의 1신종 Dictyostelium floridum sp. nov.)

  • A new species of Dictyostelium, isolated from the subalpine coniferous forests of Halla mountain, was described. The most noteworthy morphological characteristics of this new species were broad petal-like aggregates, concentrated long branches near the bases, typically clustered and delicate sorocarps. DictyosLeLium jloridurn sp. novo was also characterized by 1) elliptical spores with distinctive polar granules, 2) strongly tapering and rough surface of sorophores, 3) frequent occurrence of expanded conical bases, 4) the congealed slime substrate where the several bases were anchored into, 5) compound and c1avata tips. It was quite sensitive to environmental conditions, particularly temperature. Macrocysts and microcysts were not observed. This species can be cultured satisfactorily in assosiation with Esch'||'&'||'pound;richia coLi upon agar media of weak nutrient content, 0_1% lactosepeptone, under diffuse light and darkness. Optimum temperature for growth and develoi)ment was about $18-22^{\circ}C$, below that of most other species of the family.

  • Illite/smectite (I/S) in the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin, Arctic Canada has been scrutinized on the basis of mineralogical analysis of 215 core and drill-cutting samples from 22 exploratory wells onshore and offshore. I/S in the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin includes the following four types: random, a mixture of random and ordered, R1-ordered, and R>1-ordered I/S. A mixture of random and ordered I/S occurs in the transitional interval between random and R>1-ordered I/S, and may represent a metastable state in the ordering reaction. A widespread occurrence of the mixture in natural environments suggests that the ordering reaction may be a slow process that results in co-existence of reactants and products. K-saturation experiments show that layer charges of expandable layers in I/S are variable. High-charge expandable layers transform into illite-like layers upon simple K-saturation. K-saturation alters the composition and/or the degree of ordering in I/S, suggesting that illitization in nature can be transformational.

한국어 부사어의 분류와 분포 제약

  • 문장에서 술어를 수식하는 대표적인 표현은 부사어이다. 부사어는 일반적으로 문장 구성에서 핵심적 역할을 하지 않는 첨가어(adjuncts)이기 때문에 핵심적인 역할을 하는 보충어(complements)에 비해 상대적으로 연구가 덜 이루어진 분야이다. 그렇지만 부사어는 피수식어의 의미를 구체화/한정하는 기능을 하기 때문에 정확한 의사소통을 위해서는 반드시 필요한 요소이며 어순, 호응(concord)등의 통사적 현상과도 밀접한 관련이 있다. 이 연구의 일차적 목적은 이러한 부사어를 통사적, 의미적 기준에 의해 정확하게 분류하고 그들의 분포제약을 밝히는 것이다. 그 다음으로, 부사어와 관련된 통사 현상으로, 부사어와 피수식어의 공 기(co-occurrence)관계 및 부사어와 술어 어미의 호응 관계에 대한 분석을 제공하려고 한다. 부사어는 통사적인 기준과 의미적인 기준으로 분류할 수 있다 (손남익 1995, 김경훈 1996, 임유종 1998). 통사적 기준으로는 단어나 구를 수식하는 성분부사와 문장을 수식하는 문장 부사로 나누는 방법과 위치에 대한 제약이 있느냐 없느냐에 따라 제약부사와 자유부사로 나 누는 방법이 있다. 이 두 통사론적 기준에 의해 분류되는 부사들은 서로 어떤 상관관계를 보이고 있는지 살펴 볼 것이다. 일반적으로 문장부사는 문두에 놓여야 한다는 위치적 제 약 이 있기 때문에 제약부사로 분류된다. 의미적 기준으로 부사어를 분류할 수도 있는데, 시간/ 공간 부사어, 양태/정도 부사어 등으로 나눌 수 있다. 의미적 기준에 의해 분류된 부사어는 통사적 기준에 의해 분류된 것들과는 어떤 상호 관련성을 맺고 있는지 살펴 볼 것이다. 일 반적으로 시간부사와 장소부사는 자유부사에 속하며 양태부사와 정도부사는 제약부사에 속 한다. 부사어와 피수식 요소와의 통사적 공기 관계 및 의미적 관계 그리고 그와 관련된 문 법 현상도 연구의 대상이 된다. 예를 들어, 자유로운 어순을 가진 부사들이지만 “*순이는 빨리 과연 달린다”에서 볼 수 있는 종류의 분포적 특성을 알아 볼것이다 (심재기 1982, 송 철의 1989). 또한 “길이/*길게 빛나다”와 “*길이/길게 드리워졌다”와 같은 대조에서 나타나는 통사, 의미적 기능의 상관 관계 및 제약들의 상호 작용도 살펴 볼 것이다.

Variation of PM10 Concentration in Seoul in Association with Synoptic Meteorological Conditions (종관기상장에 따른 서울 지역 미세먼지 농도 변화)

  • To evaluate dominant synoptic classes which affect on $PM_{10}$ concentration in Seoul, 64 synoptic classes are classified from four seasons, 850hPa geopotential wind and lower level stability Index. In this study, we used air monitoring and meteorological data in Seoul for five years from 2001 to 2005. The results indicate that the highest occurrence frequency of synoptic class is under a strong westerly geopotential wind and stable lower atmosphere in spring. The highest $PM_{10}$ concentration of synoptic class is associated with a weak geopotential wind speed and high lower level stability. In that class, not only $PM_{10}$ but $SO_2$, $NO_2$ and CO concentrations are also higher than other classes. The analysis of spacial distribution of $PM_{10}$ concentration in each class are indicate that the influence of synoptic class are similar in the Metropolitan area in Korea. But $PM_{10}$ concentration in some areas in Kyoung-Gi are more higher than in Seoul. The relationship between $PM_{10}$ concentration and Meteorological indicator (relative humidity, temperature, surface wind speed) under same synoptic class is more correlative in Winter than other season.

Design of Wedge in the Electro-Mechanical Brakes for Commercial Vehicles to Boost Braking Friction Forces (브레이크 마찰력 증가를 위한 상용차용 전기-기계식 브레이크의 쐐기 설계)

  • This paper proposes a new type of electro-mechanical wedge brake for commercial vehicles. The brake operates on a novel mechanism for self-boosting braking friction forces using eccentric shafts, and involves wedges that are inserted between the rampbridge and traverse; this self-boosting mechanism is explained herein. A dynamic analysis using ADAMS was conducted, and the findings are reported. The constraint and contact conditions are explained to verify the precision of the dynamic analysis. The dynamic analysis shows that in the proposed mechanism, the self-boosting effect occurs as desired. However, it is also noted that the system has a limitation in terms of the production of unlimited braking forces that can jam the roller inside the wedges. After demonstrating the self-boosting effect, dynamic analyses are performed for several values of the wedge angles and friction coefficients between the brake pads and disks. Conventionally, a lower wedge angle has been suggested owing to its provision of a larger clamping force for given friction coefficients. However, it is noted that lower wedge angles can lead to a higher probability of occurrence of undesirable high braking forces, which can jam the roller into the wedge; thus, a larger wedge angle is preferable for avoiding the undesirable jamming phenomena. These analysis results are presented and discussed herein.

A Study on Embedded Crack at the Hatch Coaming FCA Butt Weldment in an Ultra Large Containership on the Basis of Fracture Mechanics (초대형 컨테이너선의 해치 코밍 용접부의 내부 균열에 대한 파괴역학적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to prevent the unstable fracture at the FCA butt weldment of hatch coaming deck in the ultra large containership during service life. In order to do it, the behavior of the embedded crack at the weldment under design loading conditions was evaluated in accordance with BS7910. Here, the level of primary stress induced by ship motion was evaluated by the design code of classification society and FEA. The level of residual stress as secondary stress was calculated in consideration of the restraint degree of weldment and welding heat input by using the predictive equation proposed by authors in the previous study. The fatigue crack growth rate at the weldment was evaluated using CT specimen in accordance with ASTM E647. According to the results, although the allowable defect for embedded crack specified in the classification society exists at the weldment, the occurrence possibility of unstable fracture at the weldment could not be negligible, regardless of CTOD value given in this study. So, in this study, the effect of initial defect size, welding heat input, restraint degree and CTOD on the fracture mechanical characteristics of embedded crack at the weldment was evaluated by the comprehensive fracture assessment. Based on the results, the design criteria including allowable defect, residual stress level and CTOD value was established to prevent the unstable fracture at the FCA butt weldment of hatch coaming deck in an ultra large containership during service life of 20years.

Effect of Pig Manure Compost or Sucrose Application on Recovering Chinese Cabbage from Ammonium Toxicity

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of application of urea and combination of urea and pig manure compost (PMC) on the occurrence of and the recovery from ammonium ($NH_4{^+}$) toxicity in Chinese cabbage. To identify $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity of the crop four levels of urea at 0, 160, 320, and $480kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ were applied, in addition, three levels of PMC at 10, 20, and $40M/T\;ha^{-1}$ was also applied with urea $320kg\;ha^{-1}$. For recovery $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity, six levels of sucrose were treated at the amount of 0, 600, 1,200, 1,800, 2,400, and $3,000kg\;C\;ha^{-1}$ at each level of combining treatments of urea and PMC. Our results showed that $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity was occurred at every urea application of $320kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ regardless of PMC applied to the soils because $NH_4{^+}$ contents in the soils were more than $155mg\;kg^{-1}$ which was found to be the critical level to damage crop growth at 2 days after transplanting (DAT) in this experiment, the more sucrose was applied up to $1,800kg\;C\;ha^{-1}$ for the plants damaged by ammonium toxicity occurred at $320kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$, the greater extents recover the plants from the toxicity. PMC showed the similar effect with sucrose on recovering Chinese cabbage plants from $NH_4{^+}$ toxicity at 30 DAT.

Warpage Improvement of PCB with Material Properties Variation of Core (코어 물성 변화에 따른 인쇄회로기판의 warpage 개선)

  • In this paper, warpage magnitude and shape of printed-circuit board in case that properties of core and thickness of solder resist are varied are investigated. The cause of warpage is coefficient of thermal expansion differences of stacked materials. Therefore, we need small difference of coefficient of thermal expansion that laminated material, and need to decrease asymmetric of top side and bottom side in structure shape. Also, we can control occurrence of warpage heightening hardness of core in laminated material. Composite material that make core are exploited in connection with the structural bending twisting coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. If we use such characteristic, we can control warpage with change of material properties. In this paper, warpage of two layer stacked chip scale package is investigated, and evaluate improvement result using an experiment and finite element method tool.

Lack of Association of BRCA1 and BRCA2 Variants with Breast Cancer in an Ethnic Population of Saudi Arabia, an Emerging High-Risk Area

  • Incidence of breast cancer shows geographical variation, even within areas of ethnic homogeneity. Saudi Arabia has witnessed an increase in occurrence of breast cancer in its unexplored ethnic populations over the past few years. We aimed at determining whether any association exists between single nucleotide polymorphisms in breast cancer associated gene 1 (BRCA1) and breast cancer associated gene 2 (BRCA2) and the risk of breast cancer. TaqMan based Real Time Polymerase chain reaction genotyping assays were used to determine the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms in BRCA1 (rs799917) and BRCA2 (rs144848) in a group of 100 breast cancer patients and unaffected age matched controls of Saudi Arabian origin. The present data revealed that neither BRCA1 nor the BRCA2 studied variant show any significant association with the disease. This study failed to find any role of the concerned variants in breast cancer either as risk or as prognostic factors. The small number of patients registered was one of the limitations of this study. In summary, comparison of mutation profile with other ethnic populations and regions reflected both differences and similarities indicating co-exposure to a unique set of risk factors. The differences could be due to exposure to particular environmental carcinogens; different lifestyle, reproductive pattern; dietary or cultural practices of Saudi Arabian women that need further investigations.

  • Under the co-sponsorship of UNIDROIT and I.C.A.O., a preliminary draft Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and a preliminary draft Protocol on Matters Specific to Aircraft Equipment has been prepared. The purpose of the Convention is to provide for the creation and effect of a new international interest in mobile equipment. The Convention's approach is quite novel in that it purports to create an international interest based upon the convention itself. The Convention is intended to be supplemented by Protocols, each of is intended to provide equipment-specific rules necessary to adapt the rules of the Convention to fit the special pattern of financing for different categories of equipment. To date, two sessions of governmental experts were held in Rome and Montreal. Korean delegations attended the two sessions. One of the members of the Korean delegation published a report on the first session. He expressed his objection to the so called self-help remedy contemplated by the current preliminary draft of the Convention which enables the holder of a security interest to repossess and dispose of the subject of the security interest by private sale rather than public auction on the occurrence of an event of default of the debtor. His view is based upon his understanding that under Korean law, the only remedy available to the holder of a security interest in mobile equipment, such as an airplane, is to apply to the competent court for a public auction. In my view, his understanding is not quite correct and is inconsistent with the current practice in Korea. Under Korean law, the parties' agreement for private sale is in principle valid unless there is an interested party who has acquired a security interest after the creation of the prior security interest or a creditor who has caused the subject of the security interest to be attached by a competent court. In this article, I discuss the current Korean law and practice relating to the enforcement of security interests by private sale in more detail.
