  • The understanding of tool-rock interaction mechanism is of high essence for improving the rock breaking efficiency and optimizing the drilling parameters in mechanical rock breaking. In this study, the tool-rock interaction models of indentation and cutting are carried out by employing the discrete element method (DEM) to examine the rock failure modes of various brittleness rocks and critical indentation and cutting depths of the ductile to brittle failure mode transition. The results show that the cluster size and inter-cluster to intra-cluster bond strength ratio are the key factors which influence the UCS magnitude and the UCS to BTS ratio. The UCS to BTS strength ratio can be increased to a more realistic value using clustered rock model so that the characteristics of real rocks can be better represented. The critical indentation and cutting depth decrease with the brittleness of rock increases and the decreasing rate reduces dramatically against the brittleness value. This effort may lead to a better understanding of rock breaking mechanisms in mechanical excavation, and may contribute to the improvement in the design of rock excavation machines and the related parameters determination.

  • It was previously shown that AtNAP1 is a plastidic SufB protein involved in Fe-S cluster assembly in Arabidopsis. In this study, we investigated the effects of depleting SufB protein from plant cells using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). VIGS of NbNAP1 encoding a Nicotiana benthamiana homolog of AtNAP1 resulted in a leaf yellowing phenotype. NbNAP1 was expressed ubiquitously in plant tissues with the highest level in roots. A GFP fusion protein of the N-terminal region (M1-V103) of NbNAP1 was targeted to chloroplasts. Depletion of NbNAP1 resulted in reduced numbers of chloroplasts of reduced size. Mitochondria also seemed to be affected. Despite the reduced number and size of the chloroplasts in the NbNAP1 VIGS lines, the expression of many nuclear genes encoding chloroplast-targeted proteins and chlorophyll biosynthesis genes remained unchanged.

  • In this study, the Ar plasma treatment was used to improve the surface roughness of Poly-Si1-xGex thin film deposited by RTCVD. The surface roughness and the resistivity of Si1-xGex thin film were investigated with variation of Ar plasma treatment parameters (electrode distance, working pressure, time, substrate temperature and R.F power). When the Ar plasma treatment was used, the cluster size decreased by the surface etching effect due to the increasing surface collision energy of particles (ion, neutral atom) in plasma under the conditions of decreasing electrode distance and increasing pressure, time, temperature, and R. F power. Although the surface roughness value decreased by the reduction of the cluster size due to surface etching effect, however, the resistivity increased. This may be due to the surface damage caused by the increasing surface collision energy. It was concluded that the surface roughness could be improved by the Ar plasma treatment, while the resistivity was increased by the surface damage on the substrate.

  • In the past years, a number of theories have been published to elucidate the structure of liquid water. common to most of these theories is that water mainly consist of several different kinds of clusters and also hydrogen bonds in water may be bent to some degree. Recentrly, in a series of paper, Jhon and Eyring successfully explained thermodynamic, dielectric, surface and transport properites of water, assuming that it contains small domains of about 46 molecules. According to the theory, the cluster size does not change with temperature, but the cluster concentration changes. In this paper, the potential function for the hydrogen bond, the dispersion energy and dipole-dipole interaction terms. The calculated results show that the domain of nearly 46 molecules is energetically most probable, and its size is independent of temperature. And also, we evaluated the effect of angel variation of the bent hydrogen bond. In addition, the relaxation energy different for ice and water is also explained by this method.

  • In this paper, we propose signaling procedures amon network elements for a connection rerouting method which can reduce inter-switch handoff processing delay reduces the delay in the connection re-routing by reserving VPI/VCIs for possible inter-switch handoff calls in advance. Additionally, we mathematically analyze the signaling procedures and then suggest solutions to the relations with cluser size, network topoloty, handoff-request rete and handoff delay. With simulation, the solutions are validated. From numerical examples, we concluded taht handoff delay, one of the handoff QoSs, can be satisfied by adjusting the cluster size and network topology according to the handoff -request rate of service area. With our proposed signaling and analytic methods, we concluded that the connection rerouting method using cluster-sectoring effectively reduces the delay of inter-switch handoff processing than dynamic connection rerouting method. Our solutions are useful in guaranteeing the requested handoff delay (especially, inter-switch handoff delay) when the connection rerouting method is applied to ATM-based wireless/wired integrated network.

  • In this paper, a channel-adaptive beamforming method is proposed for OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multilexing Access) systems with smart antenna, in which the size of a cluster is determined adaptively depending on the frequency selectivity of the channel. The proposed method consists of 4 steps: initial channel estimation, refinement of channel estimates, region-splitting, and computation of weight vector for each region. In the proposed method, the size of a cluster for resource unit is determined adaptively according to a region-splitting criterion. It is shown by simulation that the proposed method shows good performances in both frequency-flat and frequency-selective channels.

  • We investigate the Au(001) surface reconstruction, numerically, by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. We find that the top-most layer of Au(001) surface is reconstructed to a contracted hexagonal face, and relaxed about 0.05$\AA$ upward at room temperature. The contraction ratio with respect to a unreconstructed Au(111) surface is about 3.5%. The hexagonal layer is slightly distorted and buckled. The surface corrugation is found to be about 0.28$\AA$ on average. In our earlier work we have predicted the in-plane orientation of the reconsturcted layer to be either $0^{\circ}$ or $0.7^{\circ}$ depending on the size of the cluster. However, we find only $0.0^{\circ}$ in this simulation because the size of the cluster correspoding to the $0.7^{\circ}$ orientation is larger than the current limitation of MD simulation. These findings are in good agreement with experimental results.

  • In this paper, we presents performance analysis of a location registration protocol using cluster concept to minimize the number of location registrations caused by reduction of cell size and explosive increasement of wireless communication subscribers. We analyze the relationship between the size of cluster and the location registration rate, and finally we apply this analysis to the hexagonal cell structure for justification.

  • The similar point of the 19 regional industrial clusters of Japan is that all of the clusters are not limited to an administrational district but rather covers a larger area. When a cluster covers a larger area, there is problem of acquiring responsible businesses and interactive planing. In order to overcome such a problem, private coordinating organizations have been installed and operated to connect and manage inter-activities of industries, universities, and research institutes. TAMA, a private coordinating organization, differs from other associations in a way that it does not deal with one specific field or business. TAMA rather dealswith various product-developing small to middle size companies by offering strategic support for the development of new technologies and expansion of new businesses. Product-developing small to middle size companies comparatively have their own abilities for technological development and marketing which is quite different from other subcontract companies and their relations to large corporations. In such aspect, product-developing companies are actually similar to large corporations with competitiveness in the world market.
