In this paper we review the observational results on Relic radio sources in clusters of galaxies. We discuss their observational properties, structures and radio spectra. We will show that Relics can be divided according to their size, morphology, and location in the galaxy cluster. These differences could be related to physical properties of Relic sources. The comparison with cluster conditions suggests that Relics could be related to shock waves originated by cluster mergers.
We present a preliminary result of the Fornax cluster survey as a part of the KMTNet Intensive Nearby Southern Galaxy Group Survey (KINGS). We discovered about 200 new dwarf galaxy candidates from the survey of the $8^{\circ}{\times}6^{\circ}$ area around the Fornax cluster. They have magnitudes ranging from V=17.5 to 22 mag (Mv = -13.8 to -9.3), and they are almost complete to V = 20 mag. Surface brightness profiles of most of these galaxies are fit well by a Sersic law with n ~ 1.0. Structural parameters of these galaxies follow well the scaling relations of dwarf galaxies in the fundamental plane. The color-magnitude diagram of these galaxies shows that they are mostly located at the faint end of the red sequence, indicating that they are the probable member of the Fornax cluster. We also derive a luminosity function of the Fornax cluster by combining the new galaxies with the known galaxies in the previous catalogs. We will discuss the future of the KINGS-Fornax.
A velocity inhomogeneity, which is defined as a regional preponderence of either radial or tangential orbits, is searched with a new technique for the Coma cluster of galaxies. It is found within $\~2h^{-1}$ Mpc from the cluster center that the Coma shows conspicuous inhomogeneities in velocity and that the inhomogeneities are real at a $99\%$ level of confidence. Even in the central region (7' - 30' from the center), zones that are dominated by radial and tangential orbits are distinguishable. Defining the cluster's 'equator' as the direction defined by the Coma-A1367 supercluster, tangential orbits dominate the 'polar' zones in the central region. Galaxies that are located in 30'-100' also inhomogeneous in velocity in that the 'polar' zones are mostly radial while the rest is nearly homogeneous. These results indicate that the Coma galaxies are exceedingly more radial in orbit, implying that merging or infalls are either still going on or an earlier virialization is likely to have occurred preferentially near the 'equator'. Incorporating the velocity inhomogeneity into mass estimators, the most appropriate mass is turned out to be $0.4\times10^{15}h^{-1}M_\bigodot(R\;\leq\;0.6h^{-1} Mpc),\;and\;1.0\times10^{15}h^{-1} M_\bigodot(R\;\leq\;2.1h^{-1}Mpc)$. The corresponding mass to blue light ratio on the average is $\~$300h. These estimates are consistent with Merritt (1987) and Hughes (1989) and the MILE is seemed to favour the mass-follows-light models than the uniform spread of dark matter throughout the cluster.
We present the results from an extensive spectroscopic survey of the central region of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199 (A2199) at z=0.03. By combining 775 new redshifts from the MMT/Hectospec observations with the data in the literature, we construct a large sample of 1624 galaxies with measured redshifts at R<30', which redsults in high spectroscopic completeness at $r_{petro,0}$<20.5 (77%). We use these data to study the kinematics and clustering of galaxies, focusing on the comparison with those of the intracluster medium (ICM) from Suzaku X-ray observations. We identify 406 member galaxies of A2199 at R<30' using the caustic technique. The velocity dispersion profile of cluster members appears smoothly connected to the stellar velocity dispersion profile of the cD galaxy. The luminosity function is well fitted with a Schechter function at $M_r$<-15. The radial velocities of cluster galaxies generally agree well with those of the ICM, but there are some regions where the velocity difference between the two is about a few hundred kilometers per second. The cluster galaxies show a hint of global rotation at R<5' with $v_{rot}=300-600kms^{-1}$, but the ICM in the same region does not show such rotation. We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm to the cluster galaxy sample at R<60' and identify 32 group candidates, and examine the spatial correlation between the galaxy groups and X-ray emission. This extensive survey in the central region of A2199 provides an important basis for future studies of interplay among the galaxies, the ICM, and the dark matter in the cluster.
We Investigate dust stripping of Virgo cluster galaxies that are known to suffer HI gas stripping. The gas stripping phenomena of these galaxies may result from either ram pressure induced by the hot intracluster medium or gravitational tidal interactions between galaxies. While much efforts have been made to directly detect gas removed from cluster galaxies, the spatial distributions of dust, which should also be affected, are hardly known. Several previous studies have tried to directly detect the morphology of gas or dust using radio or infrared observations, but such approaches are hard to widely apply because of the limit of observational resolution and sensitivity. In this study, we try a different approach using optical data: measuring the background galaxy reddening by the dust stripped from the Virgo cluster members. Based on optical color excess maps of the background galaxies, we compare the ambient dust distribution with the HI morphology of the Virgo galaxies. We discuss how efficiently dust stripping can be detected with this method and how the stripped dust is associated with the removed gas according to HI gas stripping stage over the sample.

Galaxies can be "pre-processed" in the low-density outskirts by ambient medium in the filaments or tidal interactions with other galaxies while falling into the cluster. In order to probe how early on and by which mechanisms galaxies can be affected before they enter high-density cluster environments, we are carrying out an atomic hydrogen ($H\small{I}$) imaging study of a sample of galaxies selected from three filamentary structures around the Virgo cluster. Our sample consists of 14 late-type galaxies, which are potentially interacting with their surroundings. The $H\small{I}$ observations have been done using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, and the Jansky Very Large Array with column density sensitivity of ${\approx}3-5{\times}10^{19}cm^{-2}$ in $3{\sigma}$ per channel, which is low enough to detect faint $H\small{I}$ features in the outer disks of galaxies. In this work, we present the Hi data of two galaxies that were observed with GMRT. We examine the $H\small{I}$ morphology and kinematics to find the evidence for gas-gas and/or tidal interactions, and discuss which mechanism(s) could be responsible for pre-processing in these cases.
Abell 2744 is a giant merging cluster, called the Pandora's Cluster, at the redshift of z=0.308 (corresponding to a distance of 1270 Mpc). Taking the advantage of the deep high resolution images in the Hubble Frontier Field program, we study the properties of compact stellar systems including globular clusters and ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) as well as dwarf galaxies in this cluster. We find a rich population of globular clusters and UCDs in Abell 2744. The spatial distribution of these objects is consistent with the mass map derived from lensing analysis, while showing a significant offset from the X-ray map of hot gas. The faint end of the luminosity function of the galaxies in the red sequence is fit by a flat slope, showing no faint upturn. We discuss these finding in relation with the origin of UCDs, formation of red sequence dwarf galaxies, and formation of the Pandora's cluster.
In cluster environments, most of the galaxies are found to be red and dead, but the origin of these passive galaxies is not yet clearly understood. Using a set of cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations, we study gas depletion process in and outside clusters. Our results are consistent with previous studies showing rapid stripping of a galactic cold gas reservoir during the first infall to the cluster center. Moreover, we found a fraction of galaxies that were already in the gas deficient state before reaching the cluster (i.e., pre-processed galaxies) is non-negligible. These findings lead to the idea that a complete understanding of passive galaxy population in clusters can not be achieved without a detailed understanding of gas stripping process in group size halos prior to the cluster infall.
We present the environmental dependence of the luminosity-size relation of galaxies in the local universe (z < 0.01) along with their dependence on galaxy morphology represented by five broad types (E, dEs, S0, Sp, and Irr). The environmental parameters we consider are the local background density and the group/cluster membership together with the clustercenteric distance for the Virgo cluster galaxies. We derive the regression coefficient (${\beta}$), i.e., the slope of the line representing the least-squares fitting to the data and the Pearson correlation coefficient (c.c.) representing the goodness of the least-squares fit along with the confidence interval from bootstrap resampling. We find no significant dependence of the luminosity-size relation on galaxy morphology. However, there is a weak dependence of the luminosity-size relations on the environment of galaxies, in the sense that galaxies in the low density environment have shallower slopes than galaxies in the high density regions except for elliptical galaxies that show an opposite trend.
We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopic data of ~380 star forming galaxies in the Virgo cluster to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. The chemical evolution of galaxies is linked to their star formation histories as well as to the gas interchange in different environments. We derived star formation rate (SFR) and gaseous metallicity (e.g., oxygen abundance) of star forming galaxies. Combining with GALEX ultraviolet photometry and ALFALFA HI 21 cm data, we examine the relations between SFRs, metallicity, and HI deficiency of galaxies in various regions of the Virgo cluster. We also quantify the degree of ram pressure around galaxy using the ROSAT X-ray surface brightness map. We discuss environmental effects on the chemical properties and evolution of star forming galaxies.
