  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of clothing habit on physiological adaptation to the change of season. The survey of clothing weight in fall '||'&'||' winter for 2 years, the frequency of cold infection in winter and degree of fatigue was performed with 110 female high school students. The actual condition of clothing and the correlations between clothing weight and cold infection, and between the clothing weight and degree of fatigue were suveyed. The results are followed as; 1. The clothing insulation was nearly same to indoor standard clothing insulation in H hun wearing normal clothing, but was higher 2 clo in S hun clothed uniform. Especially in spite of similar enviromental condition the clothing weight, minimum '||'&'||' maximum and variation of clothing weight for 2 years were showed to be heavier in S hun than H hun. Also indoor thermal sensation felt by the subjects indicated "cold", and the difference between clothing insulation and standard clothing insulation showed increase gradually. 2. L group was indicated to be lower in cold infaction ratio than M '||'&'||' H group, and the correlation between clothing group and cold infection ratio was recognized to be significant (p<0.05). And H hun and L-H group showed to be lower in cold infection ratio than S hun, H-L group. 3. The coefficience between clothing weight and degree of fatigue was recognized to be significant (p<0.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to create a database of information on fabric factors(i.e., fabric insulation, fabric weight, clothing weight, fabric thickness, air permeability, and water vapor resistance) of clothing used for insulations, to compare them according to clothing types, and to estimate thermal resistance of clothing using these factors. A total of 25 kinds of clothing were selected(9 types for suits, 6 types of jacket, 5 types for shirts, and 5 types for trousers). The results of this study were as follows; Thermal insulation of clothing showed the highest positive correlation(0.85, p>0.01) with thermal insulation of fabric and very high positive correlation with water vapor resistance, fabric thickness, fabric weight, and clothing weight, respectively, 0.77, 0.77, 0.73, 0.71(p>0.01). Fabric weight of jacket was higher than that of shirts and trousers. Air permeability of shirts was the highest of clothing types. Clothing insulation of jacket was higher than that of shirts and trousers and its fabric insulation was also the highest of clothing types. Regression analysis showed that fabric thickness, water vapor resistance, and fabric weight would be useful factors for estimating the thermal resistance of clothing.

  • In order to find out the influences upon not only the thermal resistance of human body but also the clothing action and the clothing weight which are caused by the differences in the thermal living conditions by using air conditioner and so on to adapt themselves to the changes of their residential environment according to the changes of seasons we investigated the clothing practices upon the male and female students in Seoul and Korean male and female students in Yanbian who are estimated to have different thermal living conditions in spite that they are same folk as well as living in the same age. 1. The total clothing weight of body surface erea was increased in order of summer autumn spring and winter seasons and by seasons the changes of the clothing weight were found in both areas, In Seoul the changes of upper outwear clothing weight were found on both sexes but in Yanbian the changes of underwear weight were found on both sexes. And the underwear weight of both sexes in Seoul was lighter than that of both sexes in Yanbian. 2. Those in Seoul tended to fell colder in winter and hotter in summer than those in Yanbian on account that the formers are more sensitive of thermal conditions than the latters. 3. Comparing clo-value claculated by the fomula of with the Winshlow's clo-value those in Yanbian had higher thermal resistance than those in Seoul. Consequently those in Seoul adapted thermselves to the seasons by controling the upper outwear weight but those in Yanbian did it with underwear weight, The male and female students in Seoul tended to feel colder in winter and hotter in summer than hose in Yanbian because the thermal sense of the former is more sensitive than that of the latter.

  • The purpose of this study were 1) to identify the effects of age and sex of Korean adolescents on the psychological variables(body attitudes, public/private self-consciousness, self-esteem), weight control practices, and clothing behaviors, and 2) to identify the relation- ships between psychological variables and weight control practices, and the effects of the variables on clothing behaviors in the adolescent' groups classified by sex and age. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Two factors of body attitudes were identified: Body-shape consciousness and Physical attractiveness. Four factors of clothing attitudes were identified: Clothing interest/dressing for others, Clothing exhibition, Dressing for self, and Psychological clothing-dependerlce. 2) There were significant effects of sex on all of the research variables. Age was found to have effects on Physical attractiveness, self-esteem, public/private self-consciousness, Clothing exhibition, and Psychological clothing- dependence. 3) In the relationships between psychological variables and weight control practices, Body-shape consciousness was negatively correlated with Physical attractiveness in all groups. Also, Body-shape consciousness had effects on weight control practice in all subject groups. 4) Public self-consciousness had direct/indirect effects on the Clothing interest/dressing for others in all subject groups. Private self-consciousness had direct/ indirect effects on dressing for self in high school boys and girls. Body-shape consciousness had indirect effects on Preference for up-to date style in male college students group, whereas weight control practices had effects on the Preference for up-to date style in female college students group. Self-esteem was found to have the effects on clothing behavior in college students groups. Among clothing attitude factors, Clothing exhibition had distinct effects on the Preference for up-to date style in all subject groups, and Clothing interest/dressing for others had effects on Clothing exhibition and Psychological clothing-dependence in high school boys and girs.

  • As the culture develops, the body of children nowadays improves, but their physical fitness is weaker than that of children in the past. If physical fitness strengthens through clothing, this must be the easiest and the most efficient long-range training method. To find out the solutions on the above mentioned problems through clothing, this study was made for the analysis of the correlations of clothing weight and physical fitness. The children's endurance upon cold can be explained by the physical fitness, and has relation with the clothing insulation. Therefore, motor ability was measured as an index of physical fitness and clothing weight was measured as an index of insulation. This observation was made in Spring and Fall, 1985, in which 339 kindergartners and their mothers were the subject. The results of the study were as follows: Physical fitness of children decreased in proportion to the clothing weight, and especially this can be seen in boys rather than in girls, and in Fall rather than in Spring. In case of the children who spent more time outdoors rather than indoors, who played in larger space, and who didn't have meat frequently, it turned out that their clothing weight was surprisingly lessened and their physical fitness was highly food.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain the basal information for standard amount of clothing weight indoor climate and working condition with investigating seasonal changes of skin temperature and factors influencing on that in Koreans. Forty eight subjects in 5 age groups(6-11, 12-19, 20-44, 45-64, 65-76 years old) with both sexs were measured skin temperature indoor climate clothing microclimate clothing weight and skinfold thickness in neutral condition in each month throughout the year. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Indoor climate koreans felt comfortable ranged 18.1-28.7$^{\circ}C$ and 51-74%RH. 2. Temperature inside the clothing ranged 30.8-32.3$^{\circ}C$ in males and 31.0-32.5$^{\circ}C$in females. There was a significant difference in temperature inside the clothing among age groups : That of 6019 age group was slightly higher than that at 45-76 age group. 3. Total clothing weight changed with season and increased in order of summer autumn spring and winter Total clothing weight of 65-76 age group was significantly greater on January and February. Breast skinfold thickness showed the smallest value in summer and the largest value in winter year. In addition to breast and abdomen skinfold thickness were larger in 45-67 age group while thigh skinfold thickness was larger in 6-19 age group. Skinfold thickness in females showed the smallest value in spring summer and the largest value in autumn and winter. In addition to triceps and suprailliac skinfold thickness were larger in 45-64 age group while thigh skinfold thickness was larger in 12-19 age goup. 5. Temperature of the lower limbs(hand, thigh. leg, and foot) showed significant correlation with the indoor temperature humidity inside clothing and total clothing weight. Temperature of the torso(breast and abdomen) showed significant correlation with the temperature inside clothing in all subjects. Abdomen skinfold thickness of all age group in male showed significant correlation with the abdomen skin temperature. triceps suprailliac and thigh skinfold thickness of 6-11 age group in female showed significant correation the upperarm abdomen and thigh skin temperature. Consequently clothing mdicroclimate total clothing weight and skinfold thickness showed significant difference in season sex and ages and had a slight effect on skin temperature.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body cathexis and clothing satisfaction. The questionnaire was administered to 458 female college students in Daegu and Sangju and the results were obtained as follows. From the questionnaire, the 14 body parts were categorized into 4 factors, these being weight/girth, lower body, face, height/length. The bust girth was not included into one of these 4 factors. Subjects were dissatisfied with all of their body parts, especially with thigh, hip girth in the lower part of the body, as well as their weight. According to the Rohrer Index distribution, 99.2% of respondents were thin or normal, but means of respondents' satisfaction scores on weight and height were very low. To measure clothing satisfaction two factors were included, these being 'satisfaction with one's clothing selection ability' and 'satisfaction with one's own clothes'. The respondents were quite neutral on their clothing selection ability and their own clothes. Two factors about clothing satisfaction were correlated negatively. All of body cathexis factors were correlated positively with 'satisfaction with one's clothing selection ability' and were correlated slightly negatively with 'satisfaction with one's own clothes'.

  • The actual clothing conditions were surveyed to diagnose clothing condition of collegians in the view point of adaptation to the thermal environment in fall. Then, clothing climate, physiological responses, and subjective sensation were investigated through wearing trials on human subjects in climatic chamber based on the results from the survey. Factors to evaluate validity of clothing condition were clothing weight, clothing climate, physiological responses of human body, and subjective sensation. Adaptability of this research to thermal environment was compared to the results of Toda's and Duno's of Japan, Chung's results of Korea rural area, and Winslow's clo value. The standard values for wearing trials were values at comfortable zone, such as $32{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ of temperature and $50{\pm}10%$ of humidity inside clothing, $36.5{\sim}37.3^{\circ}C$ of ear temperature and $32.2{\sim}34.3^{\circ}C$ of mean skin temperature. Clothing weight per body surface area was 680.9 $g/m^2$ in male and 526.7 $g/m^2$ in women. Cold resistance ability of collegians was superior to Japanese and American, and similar to rural male in Korea. According to the examination of clothing adaptability with clothing weight from the investigation on physiological responses and the actual clothing conditions survey, following were found. Temperature inside clothing ($29.8{\sim}32.3^{\circ}C$) was normal, and humidity inside clothing (32.2~54.8%) was at comfortable zone. Mean skin temperature was at its comfortable zone. Therefore, 615 $g/m^2$ in male and 525 $g/m^2$ in female were a desirable wearing condition.
