  • This study, focused on reuse of the concepts of unused clothing recycling, was intended to provide basic materials and suggestions for establishing the drastic measures necessary for consumer education related to recycling by investigating how experiences in the recycling of unused clothes would show up according to environmental consciousness and recycling consciousness and then probing the scheme for the recycling of clothes. Since it was found that recycling consciousness was the variable that exerted a great effect on experiences in recycling unused clothes, consumer education about recycling will have to be revitalized. And detailed and specialized education on environmental consciousness is more important than emphasis on the importance of environmental consciousness.

  • Focusing on 'reuse' with a view to the importance of unused cloths, this paper investigates the aspects of consumers' recycling attitudes regarding the cause and treatment of unused clothes. This research examines the responsibilities for recycling from the standpoint of consumers, and shows their requirements and advice to consumers themselves, clothing companies as the subject of production and the government and society. Considering the pattern of clothing life, this research deals with housewives who live I Seoul, Sung-nam and Choong-ju. After several pretests, the content and format of this questionnaire is revised and added. This investigation is carred by individual interviews and reponders' filling-out, from 24 November 1997 to 5 January 1998. Among the total 1,200 questionnaires, 1,150 sheets are taken back, but only 1,132 are available to analysis. The results are as follows: Most of all, among the causes of unused clothes, the problem of clothes itself is stemmed from the more responsibility of clothing companies rather than consumers'. From production to sale the companies, considering environment and recycling, should choose proper cloth material and adequate design. And then they require the consumers' attention to laundry and conservation. More important, consumers' attitudes should be changed because consumers themselves, in fact, recognize their responsibilities for recycling of clothing, from the questionnaire. After all, the recycling of clothing should lead to reduction of unused clothes as a fundamental solution. When it comes to unused clothes, its elimination pays more money and needs specialization. Moreover, citizens should participate in the problem independently and more information on the policies of recycling should be well-informed.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the need for school uniform recycling and to review the school uniform recycling-related education. 231 female high school students were asked to answer regarding the wearing state of school uniform and their satisfaction level. 10 subjects in middle school technology/home economy were evaluated. As the result, the students wore 1~2 pieces of school uniform, which showed that it was hard to keep them clean by washing them often. The satisfaction level of school uniform was not high, The lowest item was the price. Therefore, to increase the satisfaction level of the school uniforms and also to increase the sanitary level of the school uniforms, it was advisable to purchase a recycled school uniform at cheaper prices to have an extra set. For a vitalization of the recycled school uniforms, the middle school technology/home economy subjects were reviewed. In the topic of "clothing acquisition plan and purchase", the themes of planned purchase, overconsumption of clothing and environmental pollution were discussed and included preferable behaviors for disposal. The topic of "clothing manufacturing and recycling" listed recycling the clothes that are not worn or exchanging them with neighbors as well as suggesting methods to illicit environment-friendly behaviors and carrying them out. However, some textbooks only briefly explained the methods of recycling and more detailed and practical methods need to be suggested in the curriculum. In addition, the contents regarding the environment in the clothing topic need to be supplemented more and more changes, such as related education plans or data development, are required. • This study investigated how women in their 20s to 60s think about the relationship between environmental pollution and the fashion industry and categorized their perceptions. Through this, I tried to find out the direction of the fashion industry to improve environmental problems. There were four types of perceptions of fashion and environmental pollution. Type 1 recognized that the process of producing and consuming clothing causes environmental pollution, but it was a type that preferred fast fashion and valued trends. Type 2 thought that the fashion industry pollutes air and water quality, and if the price was high, recycling clothes were not purchased. Type 3 thought that the fashion industry was not the main culprit of environmental pollution, and that if you purchase clothes, you should protect the environment by wearing them for a long time. Type 4 was a type of effort to reduce environmental pollution by considering the environment first, purchasing old clothes, and changing clothes. As the importance of the environment has grown, various efforts are needed to reduce environmental pollution in the fashion field.

  • The physical and chemical properties of recycled fibers from mixed waste paper are more and more deteriorated because of unknown history of recycling times. In order to improve the mechanical properties of liner paper, the recycled fibers from wasted cotton clothes were used in papermaking process, and their applicabilities were evaluated in several points of fiber modification. Thus, two kinds of fiberizing methods from waste cotton clothes were considered by using rotary sandpaper and grinder mill. Finally, the rotary sandpaper method was relatively desirable in preserving longer fiber length and fibrillated fiber surface. The recycled cotton fibers by swelling treatment with NaOH and bleaching with reductive chemicals were mixed with OCC fibers, and the handsheets were prepared to basis weight of $80g/m^2$ and evaluated the mechanical properties of paper. The fibrous properties showed outstanding results in freeness and WRV improvements by alkali treatment and high brightness by reductive bleaching treatment. The physical and mechanical properties of sheet by mixing OCC fibers and recycled cotton fibers were also highly improved in tensile, burst strength and specially folding resistance.
