  • In this study we consider a spares provisioning problem for repairable items in which a parts inventory system is incorporated. If a machine fails, a replacement part must be obtained at the parts inventory system before the failed machine enters the repair center. The inventory policy adopted at the parts inventory system is the (S, Q) policy. Operating times of the machine before failure, ordering lead times and repair times are assumed to follow a two-stage Coxian distribution. For this system, we develop an approximation method to obtain the performance measures such as steady state probabilities of the number of machines at each station and the probability that a part will wait at the parts inventory system. For the analysis of the proposed system, we model the system as a closed queueing network and analyze it using a product-form approximation method. A recursive technique as well as an iterative procedure is used to analyze the sub-network. Numerical tests show that the approximation method provides fairly good estimation of the performance measures of interest.

  • In order to increase the productivity of electrical parts, manufacturing processes using progressive die have been widely used in the industry. If closed-die forging process may be included in the series of the forming process, however, there arise many problems in the die design, such as determination of blank size, feeding method and formability, etc. For the proper design of a process, a prediction of the process is requred to obtain many design parameters. In this work, three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element analysis is carried out to simulate precision forging process. The forging process of STEM, a part of photo pick-up hologram device, is simulated with the two types of processes, open die forging and semi-closed die forging, respectively. Form the results of analyses, the forging processes can be predicted successfully, which enables to design appropriately the die and the process.

  • In this study we consider a CONWIP system in which the processing times at each station follow a Coxian distribution and the demands for the finished products arrive according to a compound Poisson process. The demands that are not satisfied are backordered according to the number of demands that exist at their arrival instants. For this system we develop an approximation method to calculate order based performance measures such as the mean time of fulfilling a customer order and the mean number o: customer orders. For the analysis of the proposed CONWIP system, we model the CONWIP system as a closed queueing network with a synchronization station and analyze the closed queueing network using a product form approximation method. Numerical tests show that the approximation method provides fairly good estimation of the performance measures of interest.

  • In this paper, the coupling windows of the dielectric resonator filter have been analyzed. The coupling factor which has been used to characterize the coupling window is represented by closed form expressions. The deviation of the coupling factor as the size of coupling window has been compared between calculated by presented method and measured ones. There are very closed agreements. The presented method can be applied not only to design dielectric resonator but also to design varactor tuned dielectric resonator filter so as that the passband bandwidth is constant within tuned ranges.

  • In this study we consider a flow line CONWIP system in which two types of product are produced. The processing times of each product type at each station follow an independent exponential distribution and the demands for the finished products of each type arrive according to a Poisson process. The demands that are not satisfied instantaneously are either backordered or lost according to the number of unsatisfied demands that exist at their arrival instants. For this system we develop an approximation method to obtain the performance measures such as steady state probabilities of the number of parts of each product type at each station, mean waiting times of backordered demands and the proportion of backordered demands. For the analysis of the proposed CONWIP system, we model the CONWIP system as a two class closed queueing network with a synchronization station and analyze the closed queueing network using a product-form approximation method for multiple classes developed by Baynat and Dallery. In the approximation method, each subsystem is analyzed using a matrix geometric method. Comparisons with simulation show that the approximation method provides fairly good results for all performance measures.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify predictors related to aggressive behavior of patients with mental illness admitted to a closed psychiatric ward. Methods: This study adopted a retrospective design which analyzed the hospital medical records of 363 patients with mental illness admitted to the psychiatric closed ward of a university hospital in Seoul, Korea. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS IBM 20.0 and STATA 12.0 SE. ZIP (Zero-Inflated Poisson) and count data analysis were used for the factor influencing the occurrence and frequency of aggressive behavior. Results: The results of ZIP model showed that the factors influencing non-probability of aggressive behavior were anxiety, non-adherence, and frustration. In addition, the factors influencing frequency of aggressive behavior were bipolar disorder and personality disorder trait. Conclusion: We found that bipolar disorder, frustration, and non-adherence are more likely to increase the likelihood of aggressive behavior in patients with mental illness. In particular, patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder were 1.95 times more likely to engage in repetitive aggressive behavior compared to those without a diagnose. However, since the results were different form previous studies, further studies on the traits of anxiety and personality disorders are needed.

  • This study analyzes areas, traffic lines and characteristics of block of traditional villages in order to suggest how to build urban village in the way that can solve problems occurring in residential areas these days. The study showed the following results: 1) Traditional villages have definite boundary and entrance, and the community area for the villages is close to the entrance to encourage community activities of villagers. 2) With an access in the form of a blind alley branched from the main road, traditional villages form a small-sized clustering and encourage community activities in a natural way. 3) Formed of block with a pattern of net, blind alley or standing in a line on both sides, traditional villages help residents to form close relations between. These findings suggest that for building desirable urban villages, 1) they should have definite boundary, 2) size and location of community area should be determined in the way to activate community activities of residents, 3) roads inside the village should have branched form rather than standardized check pattern so that small-sized clustering could be formed along the branched inner roads, and 4) clustering in villages should be arranged in a line on both sides or in the form of a blind alley giving consideration to the length and width of roads. The roads should be also of a closed type so that residents could create strong bonds with their neighbors.

  • In this paper, we present an asymptotical analysis of channel capacity of Bell labs layered space-time (BLAST) architectures based on a zero-forcing (ZF) criterion in the sense of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We begin by introducing a new relationship related to multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel capacity. We prove that Diagonal Bell Labs Space-Time (DBLAST) attains the lower bound for MIMO channels when interference nulling is carried out based on the ZF-criterion. An exact closed-form expression for the probability density function of the channel capacity is analyzed. Based on the asymptotic behavior of the channel capacity of each layer, closed-form expressions for the asymptotic ergodic capacity are derived for BLAST. Based on the analysis presented in this paper, we gain an insight on the channel capacity behavior for a MIMO channel. Computer simulation results have verified the validity and accuracy of the proposed analysis for a wide range of antenna array sizes.

  • Necessary conditions for a deterministic optimal control problem which involves states constraints are derived in the form of a maximum principle. The conditions are similar to those of F.H. Clarke, R.B. Vinter and G. Pappas who assume that the problem's data are Lipschitz. On the other hand, our data are not continuously differentiable but only differentiable. Fermat's rule and Rockafellar's duality theory of convex analysis are the basic techniques in this paper.

  • Controlling nonlinear systems with linear feedback control methods can lead to chaotic behaviors. Order increase in system dynamics due to integral control and control parameter variations in PID controlled nonlinear systems are studied for possible chaos regions in the closed-loop system dynamics. The Lur’e form of the feedback systems are analyzed with Routh’s stability criterion and describing function analysis for chaos prediction. Several novel chaotic systems are generated from second-order nonlinear systems including the simplest continuous-time chaotic system. Analytical and numerical results are provided to verify the existence of the chaotic dynamics.
