  • A basic study was performed to develop a mini gas generator by using a commercial automotive airbag inflater. The mini gas generator can be used for industrial and military application like a seat belt pretensioner. Some parameters were experimentally investigated to reduce the size of the inflater. Basic combustion tests were performed in the closed chamber and measured the pressure and the temperature behavior according to the design parameters. From the study, essential parameters were determined to design a mini gas generator.

  • A residual gas analyzer (RGA) system has been developed in this laboratory. Characteristics of the RGA system parts such as ion source, quadrupole mass filter and sensitivity are introduced. Some efforts have been made to improve performance of the two types of ion sources, open ion source (OIS) and closed ion source (CIS). A metal mesh was placed onto the electron beam entrance of the CIS anode tube to block the filament field penetration. Sensitivity of the CIS ion sources with and without the mesh was compared by mass spectra of SF6 gas (97% He base) introduced into the CIS anode through a needle valve. About ten-times improvement in the RGA sensitivity was observed for the CIS with the mesh in the electron entrance. Computer simulation showed an axi-symmetric anode potential distribution and improved focusing of the electron beam inside the anode tube with the mesh.

  • In this paper, a non-coherent code tracking loop is designed for 3GPP HSDPA MODEM and its performance is analyzed in terms of steady-state jitter variance and transient response characteristics. Analytical closed-form formula for steady-state jitter variance is first derived for AWGN environments as a function of pulse-shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop bandwidth. Also obtained is the transient response characteristic of a tracking loop. Finally, the performance of the designed tracking loop is confirmed by computer simulations.

  • A design guide to type-3 PLLs for FMCW radars is provided. To do that, the cross-over frequencies of the open-loop transfer functions were normalized to 1 Hz and closed-loop properties were compared through simulations using Pspice. As a result, several guides to design type-3 PLLs were provided: 1) secure 45 degrees of phase margin, 2) locate two zeroes at an identical frequency, and 3) poles may be added to raise order of the PLL at higher frequencies than the cross-over frequency of the open-loop transfer function about ten times.

  • The closed-loop transfer function of 2-nd order PLL (phase-looked loop)of which loop filter has active-lag 1-st order is found. Considering the three criteria of system performance: the transient response time of the circuit, noise bandwidth by the linear analysis and stability which uses root-locus method, the optimum value of damping factor is 1.0 and the natural frequency which depends upon the signal frequency can be determined after consideration of the trade-off relationship between the transient response time and the noise bandwidth.

  • New formulas for McClellan transform parameters for the design of 2-D zero-phase FIR fan filters are optimally derived under the integral squared error(ISE) criterion. By imposing the constraint that F(0, 0)=\ulcorner, where F($.$) is the McClellan transform and $\omega$\ulcorner is the cutoff frequency of the 1-D prototype filter, the ISE is directly minimized without modifying it and, as a consequence, closed-form formulas for the McClellan transform parameters are obtained. It is shown that these formulas lead to a very efficient design for 2-D zero-phase FIR fan filters.

  • Red tilapia fingerlings were tested for 45 days on the growth rate in a closed recirculating water system omitting filter bed and was compared with common carp fingerlings grown together in the same tank and also with red tilapia fingerlings grown in a well conditioned conventional pond. The tank water was kept in deepgreen colour by heavy phytoplankton bloom during the most of the experimental period and duckweeds, Lemna sp. and water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes were put to grow in the parts of the water system. Total ammonia level in the tank was mostly kept at about 5 to 7 ppm, with a fluctuation between 3.4 and 11.2 ppm. Average daily growth rate of the tilapia in the experimental tank was $6.5112\%$ without any mortality, compared to $3.617\%$ for common carp fingerlings involving some mortality in the same tank, and to $5.7712\%$ for the tilapia grown in the conventional pond. The feed used for the experiment was one prepared for the rearing of common carp, and the duckweed grown in parts of the water system was routinely collected and fed to the tilapia in the tank as supplementary diet probably satisfying unknown growth factors.

  • Performance of a laboratory scale closed seawater recirculating aquaculture system was evaluated. Twenty-kg Korean rockfish (130 fish) with an average body weight of 153.8 g was stocked. Over 107-day culture period, fish reached final density of 51.7 kg/m$^3$ (initial density, 33.3 kg/m$^3$) on the culture tank volume basis. On a daily basis, water addition was 3.4% of the total water volume in the system. Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN)concentrations were below 1 mg/L and nitrite nitrogen (NO$_2$-N) concentrations were within the range of 1-3 mg/L on most sampling days. TAN was removedin bead and sand filters and it was removed or produced in the sedimentation basin. Basically, NO$_2$-N was removed in the bead and sand filters while it was either removed or produced in the sedimentation basin. Nitrate nitrogen (NO$_3$-N) was produced in the bead filters and removed in the sand filter and sedimentation basin. Foam fractionator performed well in the recirculating system. The maximal daily removal values for total suspended solids (TSS) and protein were 10,9 g and 1.4 g, respectively. Whole water quality parameters were within the levels commonly recommendedfor fish culture on most of the sampling days. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the commercial feasibility of this system because of the small-scale system used in present experiment. At least, present study still provides some basic information for further studies of this kind of system.

  • This paper presents the design of closed loop controllers operating a single-phase AC-DC three-level converter for improving power quality at AC mains. Closed loop inhibits outer voltage controller and inner current controller. Simulations of three level converter with three different voltage and current controller combinations such as PI-Hysteresis, Fuzzy-Hysteresis and Fuzzy tuned PI-Hysteresis are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink. Performance parameters such as input power factor and source current total harmonic distortion (THD) are considered for comparison of the three controller combinations. The fuzzy-tuned PI voltage controller with hysteresis current controller combination provides a better result, with a source-current THD of 0.93% and unity power factor without any source side filter for the three level converter. For load variations of 25% to 100%, a THD of less than 5% is obtained with a maximum value of only 1.67%. Finally, the fuzzy-tuned PI voltage with hysteresis controller combination is implemented in a Xilinx Spartan-6 XC6SLX25 FPGA board for experimental validation of power quality enhancement. A prototype 100 W, 0-24-48 V as output converter is considered for the testing of controller performance. A source-current THD of 1.351% is obtained in the experimental study with a power factor near unity. For load variations of 25% to 100%, the THD is found to be less than 5%, with a maximum value of only 2.698% in the experimental setup which matches with the simulation results.

  • This paper dealt with the frequency component analysis of acoustic signals produced by corona and series-arc discharges as a diagnostic technique for closed-switchboards. Corona and series-arc discharge were simulated by a needle-plane electrode and an arc generator specified in UL1699, respectively. Acoustic signal was detected by a wideband acoustic sensor with a frequency bandwidth of 4 Hz~100 kHz (-3 dB). We analyzed frequency spectrums of the acoustic signals detected in various discharge conditions. The results showed that acoustic signals mainly exist in ranges from 30 kHz to 60 kHz. From the experimental results, an acoustic detection system which consists of a constant current power supply (CCP), a low noise amplifier (LNA) and a band pass filter was designed and fabricated. The CCP separates the signal component from the DC source of acoustic sensor, and the LNA has a gain of 40 dB in ranges of 280 Hz~320 kHz. The high and the low cut-off frequency are 30 kHz and 60 kHz, respectively. We could detect corona and series-arc discharges without any interference by the acoustic detection system, and the best frequency is considered in ranges of 30 kHz~60 kHz.
