In this research, we propose an automatic knowledge acquisition and composite knowledge expression mechanism based on machine learning and relational database. Most of traditional approaches to develop a knowledge base and inference engine of expert systems were based on IF-THEN rules, AND-OR graph, Semantic networks, and Frame separately. However, there are some limitations such as automatic knowledge acquisition, complicate knowledge expression, expansibility of knowledge base, speed of inference, and hierarchies among rules. To overcome these limitations, many of researchers tried to develop an automatic knowledge acquisition, composite knowledge expression, and fast inference method. As a result, the adaptability of the expert systems was improved rapidly. Nonetheless, they didn't suggest a hybrid and generalized solution to support the entire process of development of expert systems. Our proposed mechanism has five advantages empirically. First, it could extract the specific domain knowledge from incomplete database based on machine learning algorithm. Second, this mechanism could reduce the number of rules efficiently according to the rule extraction mechanism used in machine learning. Third, our proposed mechanism could expand the knowledge base unlimitedly by using relational database. Fourth, the backward inference engine developed in this study, could manipulate the knowledge base stored in relational database rapidly. Therefore, the speed of inference is faster than traditional text -oriented inference mechanism. Fifth, our composite knowledge expression mechanism could reflect the traditional knowledge expression method such as IF-THEN rules, AND-OR graph, and Relationship matrix simultaneously. To validate the inference ability of our system, a real data set was adopted from a clinical diagnosis classifying the dermatology disease.
Purpose : This study investigates pediatric nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding iatrogenic narcotic analgesic withdrawal symptoms management (INAWSM). Methods : In this cross-sectional study, 253 pediatric nurses working at a tertiary hospital in Seoul participated. Instruments were the inventory consisting questionnaires on 35 items knowledge and 12 items attitude for INAWSM. Further, descriptive statistics, t-test, and analysis of variance were used to evaluate the nurses' knowledge and attitudes. Results : The correct answers rate of knowledge toward INAWSM was 44.9%. With respect to the pediatric nurses' attitudes, the participants scored an average value of $2.83{\pm}0.25$ out of 4 points. The factor related to the knowledge and attitude level was age, pediatric nursing experience, educational experience, and educational needs. Conclusions : Results revealed that pediatric nurses had inadequate knowledge and attitude on INAWSM despite a compulsory education. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient INAWSM educational program.
Background: Successful implementation of pain management procedures and guidelines in an institution depends very much on the acceptance of many levels of healthcare providers. Aim: The main purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes regarding pain among nurses working in tertiary care in a local setting and the factors that may be associated with this. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional research study used a modified version of the Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey (NKAS) regarding pain. Basic demographic data were obtained for further correlation with the level of pain knowledge. Results: A total of 566 nurses, 34 male and 532 female, volunteered to participate in this study. The response rate (RR) was 76%, with an overall mean percentage score of $42.7{\pm}10.9$ (range: 5-92.5). The majority of participants were younger nurses below 40 years of age and more than 70% had worked for less than 10 years ($6.6{\pm}4.45$). Up to 92% had never had any formal education in pain management in general. The total mean score of correct answers was $58.6{\pm}9.58$, with oncology nursing staff scoring a higher percentage when compared with nurses from other general and critical care wards ($63.52{\pm}9.27$, p<0.045). Only 2.5% out of all participants obtained a score of 80% or greater. The majority of the oncology nurses achieved the expected competency level (p<0.03). Conclusions: The present findings give further support for the universal concern about poor knowledge and attitudes among nurses' related to the optimal management of pain. The results reflected that neither number of years working nor age influenced the level of knowledge or attitudes of the practising nurses. Oncology nursing staff consistently scored better than the rest of the cohort. This reflects that clinical experience helped to improve attitudes and knowledge concerning better pain management.

Purpose : This study is to supply basal data need to development of First-Aid education program for female college students of non-health department that we surveyed safety awareness practice, First-Aid knowledge, educational requirement and necessity of the female college students of health and non-health department. Methods : This date was collected from September 1th in 2012 until October 5th by 5 person selected of which explain to purpose and method of the writing. We distributed the subject questionnaire of total 410 and analyzed questionnaire 385 only. Results : The results of this study are follows. First, the health group was higher than non-health group in conductive score of safety awareness and score of First-Aid knowledge in female students and there was statistically significant difference. Second, There was significant difference in Economical state, Educational state of the Safety awareness Practice score and First-Aid knowledge score about the general characteristic of the female college students of health department. Third, there wasn't significant difference in most of all item of the Safety awareness Practice score and First-Aid knowledge score about the general characteristic of the female college students of non-health department. Conclusion : Finally, We found that the female college students of health department lower than the female college students of non-health department in First-Aid knowledge level and surveyed that they felt the needs of First-Aid education. Therefore, there are able to need the opening of a course in order to raise the quality of safety awareness and First-Aid knowledge or to needs construction of educational system in continuously.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify clinical decision making pattern of pediatric nurses and analyze how it shows the differences in types of decision making pattern by nurses characters. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was used to pediatric nurses of 4 general hospitals in Seoul from February 2004 to April 2004. The data of 251 nurses was analyzed by varimax rotation factor analysis, t-test, and ANOVA. Results: 6 decision making patterns were identified: Individual Patient-oriented, Pattern-oriented Intuitive, Typical Nursing Knowledge-oriented, Nursing Model-oriented, Medical Knowledge-oriented, and Patient-Family-Nurse Collaborative. Individual Patient-oriented, Pattern-oriented Intuitive, Typical Nursing Knowledge-oriented, and Nursing Model-oriented decision making pattern got meaningful differences in age, marital status, total number of years in nursing practice, and number of years in pediatric nursing practice. Conclusion: We expect the result of this study can be applied for promotion of understanding the decision making of nurses that occurs in pediatric nursing practice and also can be used as foundation data for development and expansion of pediatric nursing practice.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of simulation-based education on knowledge about and self-confidence in maternity nursing care in senior students. Methods: One group, pre-post design, was utilized with 28 students. The simulation-based maternity nursing education that consisted of two sessions each 2 hours long for intrapartum and postpartum care was provided to 4 small groups. An expert panel of 3 maternity clinical instructors developed the module with a high-fidelity maternal simulator. Core items of knowledge about and self-confidence in maternity nursing care were measured with 13 items before and after the sessions. Results: The knowledge score did not increase significantly (z=-1.95, p=.05); however, self-confidence in maternity nursing care showed a significant change in the posttest (z=-2.82, p<.001). The subjective evaluation of the students indicated that the simulation-based education was helpful in preparing for clinical practicum as far as interaction with clients, psychological readiness to practice, and learning efficiencies. Conclusion: The simulation-based nursing education was useful in improving self-confidence in clinical performance for childbirth and postpartum care in nursing students. Along with the application of diverse scenarios in simulations, modules with standard patients and role-plays are also recommended for maternity nursing practicum to empower the competency of the students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an educational intervention by evaluating neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance after developing and operating a simulation-based neonatal emergency airway management education program for nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: The participants were 30 nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Data were collected from June 6 to 15, 2018 and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 22.0. Results: The results of the pretest and posttest for each educational group showed statistically significant improvements in neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance. Conclusion: The simulation-based neonatal emergency airway management training program was an effective educational program that enhanced neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance among nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Therefore, it is suggested that the program described in this study can contribute to improving nursing quality by enhancing the ability of nurses to cope with emergencies in practice. It can also be used for education for new nurses and contribute to the development of nurses' practices.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify problems and solving strategies on student evaluation of clinical nursing education. Subjects were 239 nurses in 18 hospitals from February to July, 1999. Content analysis using qualitative research method was used to analyze data taking into account the semi-structured questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows: Four categories about problems and solving strategies on the evaluation of clinical nursing education were identified: 'The environment of the clinical nursing education'; 'contents and items of evaluation tool'; 'criteria of evaluation tool'; and 'problems with evaluators in clinical settings'. The problems of the environment of the clinical nursing education were due to the lack of co-ordination between nursing schools and hospitals. In order to solve these problems, the following strategies were suggested: 'initiate a joint meeting between nursing schools and hospitals'; 'do not change the clinical settings frequently'; 'evaluate students after being familiar with them'; and 'evaluate them immediately after clinical practice was ended'. In the problems of contents and items of the evaluation tool, the contents of the tool were very abstract and general. The strategies for treating these problems were to evaluate student using the concrete evaluation items'; refrain from evaluation of nursing knowledge', develop the evaluation tools that are fit for a specific clinical setting'; develop the evaluation tools in line with students' knowledge level; and 'carry out evaluation using the proper contents of tool. The problems of criteria of the evaluation tools were the results of the lack of the clear criteria. The strategies for treating these problems were 'develop the criteria of the evaluation tool'; simplify the range of the cores or evaluate students using check-list'; to evaluate students in objective manner'. The problem of evaluators in clinical settings was due to the failure by evaluators who were not prepared for the task. The strategies were 'to educate and prepare the evaluators before evaluation'.

Developing an efficient knowledge base construction mechanism as an input method for expert systems (ES) development is of extreme importance due to the fact that an input process takes a lot of time and cost in constructing an ES. Most ES require experts to explicit their tacit knowledge into a form of explicit knowledge base with a full sentence. In addition, the explicit knowledge bases were composed of strict grammar and keywords. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a knowledge conceptualization and construction mechanism for automated knowledge acquisition, allowing an efficient decision. To this purpose, we extended traditional knowledge map (KM) construction process to dynamic knowledge map (DKM) and combined this algorithm with relational database (RDB). In the experiment section, we used medical data to show the efficiency of our proposed mechanism. Each rule in the DKM was characterized by the name of disease, clinical attributes and their treatments. Experimental results with various disease show that the proposed system is superior in terms of understanding and convenience of use.

Statistics is the science of data. As the foundation of scientific knowledge, data refers to evidentiary facts from the nature of reality by human action, observation, or experiment. Clinicians should be aware of the conditions of good data to support the validity of clinical modalities in reading scientific articles, one of the resources to revise or update their clinical knowledge and skills. The cause-effect link between clinical modality and outcome is ascertained as pattern statistic. The uniformity of nature guarantees the recurrence of data as the basic scientific evidence. Variation statistics are examined for patterns of recurrence. This provides information on the probability of recurrence of the cause-effect phenomenon. Multiple causal factors of natural phenomenon need a counterproof of absence in terms of the control group. A pattern of relation between a causal factor and an effect becomes recognizable, and thus, should be estimated as relation statistic. The type and meaning of each relation statistic should be well-understood. A study regarding a sample from the population of wide variations require clinicians to be aware of error statistics due to random chance. Incomplete human sense, coarse measurement instrument, and preconceived idea as a hypothesis that tends to bias the research, which gives rise to the necessity of keen critical independent mind with regard to the reported data.
