Managing Red Oak (Quercus rubra L.) Reduces Sensitivity to Climatic Stress

  • This study was conducted in a long-term experimental forest in the central hardwoods region of southwestern Michigan to retrospectively examine the role of past forest management practices and climate on red oak (Quercus rubra L.) productivity. Initially, in 1971, plots within the experimental forest were treated separately with a clearcut and shelterwood regeneration harvest in an attempt to increase red oak regeneration. From 1987-1989, a new study was initiated within a portion of the clearcut and shelterwood plots to evaluate the effectiveness of additional oak crop tree release using mechanical and chemical applications. Cumulative diameter and mortality rates of 719 red oaks were monitored across the four silvicultural treatments: Clearcut-A (clearcut without additional release treatment), Clearcut-B (clearcut with additional release treatment), Shelterwood-A (shelterwood without additional release), and Shelterwood-B (shelterwood with additional release) plus an untreated control. Increment cores were obtained from red oak trees and neighboring competitor species. Tree-ring analyses (dendrochronology) were applied to examine the effect of these silvicultural treatments and climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) on red oak productivity. The results indicated that crop tree release following a clearcut or shelterwood harvest reduced mortality rates and thus increased survival of red oak. Red oak in control plots or plots only receiving the initial regeneration harvesting treatment and no additional competition release were negatively affected by climatic stress, which included summer moisture stress. In contrast, red oak in plots that received the competition release treatment from shade tolerant tree species not only had higher tree level productivity (i.e., tree basal area) and lower mortality rates, but were also relatively more resilient to climatic stress by showing limited or no associations between climate and growth.

Harvesting Productivity and Cost of Clearcut and Partial Cut in Interior British Columbia, Canada

  • Clearcutting has been the dominant harvesting method in British Columbia (representing 95% of the total area harvested annually). However forest managers are increasingly recommending the use of alternative silvicultural systems and harvest methods, including various types of partial cutting, to meet ecological and social objectives. In this study we compared harvesting productivity and harvesting costs between treatments through detailed and shift level time studies in 300-350 year-old Interior Cedar-Hemlock stands in British Columbia, Canada. Recommendations for improving operational planning/layout and the implementation of clearcut and partial cutting silvicultural systems were made. Harvesting costs varied in the ground-based clearcut treatments from $10.95/$m^3$ - $15.96/$m^3$ and $16.09/$m^3$ - $16.93/$m^3$ in the group selection treatments. The ground-based group retention treatment had a cost of $13.39/$m^3$, while the cable clearcut had a cost of $15.70/$m^3$. An understanding of the traditional and alternative wood products that could be derived from the harvested timber was imperative to increasing the amount of merchantable volume and reducing the corresponding harvesting costs. Stand damage was greatest in the group selection treatments; however, mechanized felling showed an increase in stand damage over manual felling while grapple skidding showed a decrease in skidding damage compared to line skidding.

산지계류 수변지역에서 산림벌채 후 지하수위의 계절 변화 (Seasonal Ground Water Table Changes Following Forest Harvesting in Small Headwater Riparian Areas)

  • 본 연구에서는 산림유역의 최상류지역에 위치한 일시하천(ephemeral stream)과 간헐천(intermittent stream)이 상존하는 수변지역을 대상으로 지하수위의 계절적인 변화 양상을 파악하였다. 3곳의 산림유역(총 12개 소유역)에서 일시하천 및 간헐천의 수변구역 보호를 위한 최적관리기법을 포함하는 4개의 처리구(BMP1, BMP2, clearcut, reference)를 적용하였다. 지하수위는 각 소유역별 25개소(총 300개소)에서 2주 간격으로 측정되었으며, 벌채 전 1년과 벌채 후 2년, 총 3년 동안 관측되었다. 전체적으로 지하수위의 반응은 강우량의 영향이 큰 것으로 관찰되었다. 또한, 산림벌채전과 비교하여, 벌채 후 2년 동안 지하수위는 유의적으로 증가하였다. 특히, 벌채 1년 후(2008) 개벌처리구에서 28.2cm, 벌채 2년 후(2009) BMP2에서 54.2cm로 가장 크게 증가하였다. 그러나, 개벌처리구와 BMP2의 지하수위 변화 특성을 비교할 때, 벌채된 목재의 재적과 지하수위의 변화는 직접적인 연관성이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 산림벌채로 인한 지하수위의 증가는 �㎱굇璲� 보다 건조기간 동안 더 크게 나타났으며, 이러한 계절적인 추이는 산림벌채 후 식생구조의 차이에서 야기되는 증발산양의 변화에 기인하는 것으로 사료된다.

  • 낙엽활엽수림 개벌 후 벌채지에서 식생구조 발달과정과 변화를 관찰하기 위하여 서울대학교 농업생명과학대학 부속 남부연습림인 백운산의 벌채지를 대상으로 선정하였다. 1994년에 2개의 모니터링 조사구를 설치하였고, 1997년과 1999년에 식생조사를 하였다. 벌채후 6년간 벌채지의 산림식생변화는 다음과 같다. 벌채지 산림내부에서 벌채후 1년째에는 잔존 수목인 쪽동백나무, 때죽나무 및 비목나무가 우세하게 나타났으며, 벌채후 6년째에는 근주맹아목인 때죽나무와 비목나무, 실생목인 두릅나무가 우세하게 나타났다. 벌채지 산림내부의 종다양도지수는 남서사면에서는 낮아졌으며 북동사면에서는 높아졌다. 벌채지 내부의 흉고직경급(DBH) 분석에서 비목나무와 두릅나무의 개체수 출현이 가장 많았으며, 다음으로 졸참나무, 다릅나무, 때죽나무, 조록싸리, 생강나무, 고추나무, 누리장나무, 병꽃나무의 개체수 출현율이 높았다. 벌채지 내부에서 흉고직경급별 개체수 분포패턴은 비목나무가 역 J자형 분포곡선을 나타내고 있어 비목나무의 세력이 확장 유지될 것으로 예상되며 천이초기 선구수종언 두릅나무는 J자형 분포를 나타내어 그 세력이 쇠퇴될 것으로 예상된다.

임관 제거가 루브라참나무림의 셀룰로오스 분해와 질소 무기화에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Canopy Removal on Cellulose Decomposition and Nitrogen Mineralization in Quercus rubra Stands)

  • Although many studies of nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems have reported that clearcutting creates increased organic matter decomposition and nitrogen (N) mineralization in soils, little is known about the change of these factors following various levels of canopy removal. A series of experimental plots with four levels of canopy cover, i.e., clearcut, 25%, 75%, and uncut, was established in northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) stands in northern Lover Michigan, U.S.A. I examined decomposition of cellulose filter papers and N mineralization using an in situ soil incubation technique in the top 15cm of mineral soil during the second growing season (1992, May-October) following stand manipulation. Mass loss from cellulose filter papers was more rapid in the canopy removal treatments than in the uncut treatment. similarly, net N mineralization was significantly greater in the canopy removal treatments than in the uncut treatment. There was no significant difference in net N mineralization rates among the three levels of canopy removal. Net N mineralization for the growing season was 58 kg/ha for the clearcut, 54 kg/ha for the 25% canopy cover, 51 kg/ha for the 75% canopy cover, and 22 kg/ha for the uncut treatment. These results indicated that even only small amounts of canopy removal (leaving 75% canopy cover) let to substantial increases of cellulose decomposition and the amount of available soil nitrogen.

루브라참나무림과 레시노사소나무림의 토양 질소 무기화에 있어서 개벌의 영향 (Clearcutting Effects on Soil Nitrogen Mineralization in Quercus rubra and Pinus resinosa Stands)

  • 이 연구는 루브라참나무림과 레시노사소나무림의 질소 무기화율이 개벌후 어떤 변화를 보이는지에 관하여 조사한 결과이다. 토양상층부 15cm에서의 질소 무기화율이 비닐주머니에 토양을 배양하는 방법을 이용하여 1991년과 1992년 임목 생장 기간 동안(5월-10월) 조사되었다. 두 임목 생장 기간 동안 추정된 참나무림의 질소 무기화율은 개벌 처리구 67kg/ha, 무처리구 30kg/ha였고, 소나무림은 개벌 처리구 27kg/ha, 무처리구 13kg/ha였다. 총 질소 무기화율은 항상 참나무림이 소나무림보다 높았다. 배양전과 한달 배양후 토양으로부터 질산태 질소는 소나무림의 개벌 처리구에서 검출된 반면(두임목 생장 기간동안 평균 질산화율 : 3.3kg/ha), 두 임분의 무처리구와 참나무림의 개벌 처리구에서는 거의 검출되지 않았다. 연구 결과들은 두 임분내 이용 가능한 질소량에 상당한 증가가 개벌후 발생하였으며, 낮은 질산화율은 이 임분들에 질소 보유를 위한 중요한 작용일 가능성을 시사한다.

  • Newborn screening of some urea cycle disorders has little benefits because of early severe symptoms before the result, low sensitivity (especially hypocitrullinemia) and poor prognosis. But in case of citrullinemia, citrin deficiency and argininosuccinic aciduria diagnosed as elevated citrulline, newborn screening is helpful for early diagnosis and treatment before the symptom. Distinction between the clinical forms of these diseases is based on clinical findings and biochemical results, however, they may not be clearcut. Treatment is different from each other, so exact diagnosis is essential. Here, the diagnostic algorithm for elevated citrulline after tandem mass screening has been proposed. Minimizing total process time from sampling to report of the results is important in Korea for diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.

카드봄 내성균의 분리와 각종 중금속에 대한 저항성의 연구 (Isolation of Cadmium Ion-resistant Bacteria and Resitance to Various Heavy Metals)

  • Cadimium ion-resistant microorganism was isolated from the sludge of wastewater. The physiological, morphological and other cultural data showed that this strain belonged to Citrobacter freudii. A clearcut distinction of growth among nutrient broth, typtic soy broth and synthetic medium was demonstrated. The resistant cells showed only slight mutagenic action. During the growth of bacterial population in resting state, the organisms reduced the initial level of resistance to cadmium ions when they were not kept in contact with cadmium ions in bacteral multiplication. And cadmium ion-resistant and cadmium ion-sensitive strain were found to show equal, lower or higher sensitivity to other heave metals.

  • Photosensitization occurred in a 4-month old Holstein calf soon after going onto the pasture lush with green Japanese millet(Echinochloa crusgalli). Skin lesions were restricted to the unpigmented white area of skin. They were most pronounced on the dorsum of the body, diminishing in degree down the sides and were absent from the ventral part. The demarcation between lesions and normal skin was clearcut. There were edema, exudation and sloughing of affected skin on the left gluteal region, and erythema, edema and scab on right scapular region. Interception of the light, discontinuance of Japanese millet ingestion, and the administration of antihistamine and penicillin made the calf rapid recovery. This disease was considered photosensitization due to chlorphyll in ingested Japanese millet.
