  • In this research, settling tests with marine clays in Korea and extensive literature review were performed to investigate the characteristics of sedimentation and consolidation so that their behaviors during dredging and reclamating could be evaluated. Design parameters related to Yano's method (1985), one of experimental approaches having been used widely in Korea to estimate sedimentation and consolidation, were analyzed and their proprieties were reassessed. For samples from four different sites of south and west coasts in Korea respectively, settling tests with 1m height of columns were carried out, changing initial water content and height of sample in order to evaluate settling and consolidation characteristics of them from analyzing test results. More reliable regression curves than values from literature review were obtained as analyzing test results of estimating coefficient of sedimentation/ consolidation and initial setting velocity with changing initial water content. Relation between height of soil solid and surface height of slurry at the stages of initiation and termination of consolidation was also assessed. Finally, for marine clays of south and west coasts of Korea, ranges and average values of these design parameters were evaluated and typical empirical equations between these design parameters were also proposed. On the other hand, comparisons of characteristics of sedimentation and consolidation between marine clays from south coast and them from west coast were also performed.

  • The potential use of modified clays in the adsorption of vapor phase benzene and toluene was investigated. The modified clays OC-CPC, IOC, and Al-PILC were prepared for comparative purposes and were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. It was confirmed the intercalation of the aluminium pillar in IOC and Al-PILC, as well as the introduction of cetylpyridinium. The adsorption studies showed a great affinity of benzene and toluene for OC-CPC due to the hydrophobic character that resulted and also to the increase in the interlaminar distance. IOC showed a lower affinity for the benzene and toluene, followed by Al-PILC. Natual clay had no affinity for benzene and toluene due to its hydrophilic nature. Clay materials having a laminar structure can be chemically modified, changing their physiochemical characteristics, such as interlaminar distance, surface area, pore size, and chemical affinity. In this study, it was focused on obtaining modified clays to be used for the adsorption of volatile organic chemicals.

  • Although the use of pottery-making soils has a long history, its use in the pottery industry requires that physical and geotechnical properties of the materials be established to define the suitability for various purposes. The main purpose of this study is to identify the different types of clays and mineral composition and to perform the geotechnical evaluation of the clays for making pottery products. Soils investigated in this study include raw materials used for making Baekja (white porcelains), Chungja (celadons), Buncheong, Sancheong, and Johyung. Pottery-making soils are manufactured by using different types of soils and sold by individual ceramic clay company. This study includes physical tests of soil and chemical analysis of major elements using XRF and XRD instrumentation. Grain size distributions, mineralogical composition, and a range of plasticities of soils for making different types of potteries are presented. Correlations between specific type of pottery clays and geotechnical and mineralogical characteristics are determined by comparing the test results. Since quantitative research using laboratory tests for pottery-making soils are rarely performed in Korea, further research should be done in the future to improve the Korean pottery industry.

  • The characteristics of soft clays is very important for the land development plan. This study is to investigate correlations between the engineering properties and the characteristics of clay minerals of the disturbed clay samples obtained from Sihwa area. This study included X-Ray Diffraction Analysis, X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer Analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometer Analysis. The correlations between the clay mineral properties and the laboratory and field testing results were investigated.

  • Although the purpose of dredging in the past was merely as a means of lowering the water level, presently land reclamation from dredged fill is of greater interest. From an economical standpoint, due to the difficulties in acquiring landfill for coastal projects, there is a growing trend toward simply using easily obtainable marine clay for use as fill. But because the ground formed by dredged fill has but low strength and is accompanied by large settlements, it is important that the engineering characteristics be fully investigated. In order to use dredged Masan marine clays as fill material, the engineering characteristics have been studied in this paper.

  • A rapid and simple test to distinguish halloysite from kaolinite in mineral mixtures has been developed based on differences in the rate and extent of formamide intercalation. The results of quantitative analysis by formamide intercalation reaction GEC contained 90% of kaolin minerals, GEC contained of 86% of halloysite and GYK contained of 59% kaolinite. The extent of formamide intercalation by kaolinite was likely influenced by sample crystallinity.

  • Ceramic glaze has been developed by numerous experiences and knowhow of potters for a long time. It has offered curiosity and beauty to many people with a variety of colors. This study first verifies the color difference according to clays and glazing used for the coloration experiment based on generation process and chemical reaction of cobalt sulfate, and determines the effect of a dilution ratio with water on changes in coloration concentration. The cobalt-aluminate spinel and the cobalt-silicate olivine are the strongest of the ceramic pigment, producing a very pure, navy blue color.

  • Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are a new type of information processing system based on modeling the neural system of human brain. The prediction of swell pressures from easily determined soil properties, namely, initial dry density, initial water content, and plasticity index, have been investigated by using artificial neural networks. The results of the constant volume swell tests in oedometers, performed on statically compacted specimens of Bentonite-Kaolinite clay mixtures with varying soil properties, were trained in an ANNs program and the results were compared with the experimental values. It is observed that the experimental results coincided with ANNs results.

  • A number of Korean potsherd samples has been classified by Fisher's discriminant method for the training set of Kyungki, Koryung and Kyungnam groups. The Koryung samples have been further classified for the training set of Koryung A, B and C subgroups. The training sets have been used to define classification of unknown samples and clay samples so as to find out some similarity between clay samples and certain potsherd groups.
