  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the structures of teacher's discourse according to the pattern of interaction between teachers and students in the understanding mathematical word problem. The structures of teacher's discourse could be conceptualized as a process in which the teacher starts, develops and organizes the discourse based on prior research. For this purpose, the fourth class(example, a problem of the same type as the example, formative assessment, and final assessment) was extracted from one semester of experienced teachers who have been practicing teaching methods to facilitate student participation for many years. A methodology used to develop a theory based on data collected through classroom observations. Because the purpose of the study is to identify the structures of teacher's discourse to help the problem understanding, observe the teacher's discourse and collect data based on student engagement. Results show that the structure of teacher's discourse, which consults on important aspects of interaction between teachers-students and creates mathematical meanings, helped students understand the mathematics word problem by promoting their engagement in class. Based on the structures of teacher's discourse to understand problems based on the interaction patterns between teachers and students, it can be said that teachers provided specific methodologies on how to communicate with students in order to understand problems in the future.

  • This study investigated the improved teaching methods which can enhance the learning effects of students in engineering education and provide students with practical abilities of field works. As the results of applying student-oriented teaching methods to students who take the course of hydraulic and pneumatic control in the department of mechanical design engineering of Dongyang technical college, student-oriented teaching method Is more effective than professor-oriented teaching methods in the aspects of motivation of learning, cultivation of imagination and creativity, and ability of solving problems. In order to successfully execute student-oriented teaching method, integrated lecture of both theory and experimental practice has been carried out in the classroom equipped with experimental facilities, and after acquiring sufficient experience through experimental practices, students looked into theoretical backgrounds based on the experimental results during the process solving the subjects which a professor suggested. The subjects should be suggested with the contents for accomplishing the goal of learning, and it is very important for a professor to play the role of helping students solve the problems by themselves, which results in improving practical ability of field works. At the end of every class, a professor has students fill up the questionnaire about the level of learning achievement, questions, and teaching method, and applying the surveying results to the next class can bring out improving the extents of students' participation of classes and concerns about the course. Since the engineering education requires a practical ability of field works, imagination, and creativity in every course, it is desirable to introduce student-oriented teaching method rather than professor-oriented teaching method.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) about area of plane figure and how it was actualized in instruction. As an exploratory, qualitative, and comparative case study, 2 fifth-grade teachers were selected. Semi-structured interviews with the leachers were conducted in order to explore their PCK with regard to the area of plane figure. A total of 14 mathematics instructions were videotaped and transcribed. Teachers' PCK and classroom teaching practices were analyzed in detail into 3 categories: (a) knowledge of mathematics contents, (b) knowledge of students' understanding, and (c) knowledge of instructional methods. As such, this paper provided a detailed description on each teacher's PCK and her teaching practice. The results showed that teachers' PCK had a significant impact on instruction. The teacher who had rich knowledge about the area of plane figure was able to encourage students to understand the concept of area and to or explore the principles behind formula calculating various areas of plane geometry. The results demonstrated the importance of individual components of PCK as well as that of overall level of PCK. Different aspects of teaching practices were observed as to how the teachers had internalized PCK. On the basis of a close relationship between teachers' PCK and their teaching practice, this paper finally raised several implications for teachers' professional development for effective mathematics instruction.

  • This study examined value-judgement and decision-making process of middle school students on three biotechnology related socioscientific issues (SSI) (i.e. designer baby, amniotic fluid test, and embryonic stem cell research). In particular, it focused on the level of consistency in their value application to the decisions. Twenty 8th grade students participated in the SSI program. The participants were asked to mark their positions on each issue before and after the debates. All classroom and sub-group debates were audio-recorded. The researcher conducted individual interviews with 10 students after the program. The results show three patterns emerging. First, five students applied their personal values in a consistent manner when making decisions on the three consecutive issues. Second, three students demonstrated incremental resoluteness in their value application as the sessions proceeded and had tendency to be oriented towards a specific value, more so towards the end of the program than the beginning. And third, four students gradually showed ambivalence in their decisions as they participate in the program. The results suggest that science teachers addressing SSI need to encourage students to be aware of their own values and to engage in internalized decision-making in light of those values. They also need to be aware of the possible challenges that students might feel in their decision-making process caused by the complexity of SSI.

For the purpose of this study, we made the flipped learning programs applied printed reading material and applied them to the 6th grade science class in the elementary school. Selection of the applied test is considered the special feature of flipped learning and existing researches about the flipped learning. The PRM contains the Science words, conceptions, explanation about contents. And it was added to checking system by quiz. The results were as follows: The science class applied PRM was effective on increase in Korean elementary school students' the curiosity (in Intrinsic Goal Orientation) and attention (in Task Value) about science class content. There were no significant difference in the results of academic achievement. But the improvement of students' academic achievement in class applied PRM were bigger than that of those in class applied existing methods that follow the process of the teacher's guidebook in the same way. Students had the highest satisfaction about communication and environmental education in the class applied PRM.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the effect of mathematics teaching experience during the teaching practicum on pre-service elementary teachers' beliefs about mathematics. The conclusions drawn from the entire research were, as follow: First, it can be said that mathematics teaching experience during the teaching practicum has a significant effect on the change of pre-service elementary teachers' beliefs about mathematics. Specifically, the teaching experience during the teaching practicum has statistically significantly negative effects(p=.05) on pre-service elementary teachers' beliefs about the teaching mathematics. Second, the factors which help pre-service elementary teachers the most in preparing for mathematics classes are collaborating teachers in charge of supervising them, the teacher's guidebook and materials acquired from the Internet. Third, pre-service elementary teachers are well aware of the importance of understanding students and emphasize concrete manipulative activities, but experience lots of failures due to difficulty of drawing students' attention. Fourth, collaborating teachers do not play a significant role in helping pre-service elementary teachers develop and change their beliefs about mathematics positively. The advise given by collaborating teachers to pre-service elementary teachers is mostly about simple techniques of managing the classroom. So, collaborating teachers do not affect significantly and positively on the change of pre-service elementary teachers' beliefs. Fifth, regardless of their belief tendency, pre-service elementary teachers teach more confidently and feel more satisfactory when they prepared for classes more thoughtfully and understanded students more deeply.

  • In the information oriented society, a good lesson helps learners to develop self-learning ability. To give a good lesson, teachers should teach with details in learning contents that learners can understand easily, not with abstract and generalized concepts in the textbook. And they also should find the effective instructional media to give students the learning contents. Since the newspaper carries the most current and up-to-date source of information about various fields, if it is used as the teaching material in the classroom, it can help students to learn useful and practical knowledge. Therefore, newspapers are so-called 'living textbook'. NIE which enables students to enhance their ability to utilize the information and to learn wisdom about life, is already actively applied to the educational activities. And e-learning system and the electronic newspaper that make learning happen to anyone anytime anywhere, appears with the advancements in information technology and changing educational paradigm. This changed circumstance make the field and the way of NIE enlarge to e-NIE. e-NIE is the educational media that helps the learners to learn the way of learning. But the study about e-NIE through designing a teaching plan systematically has not been made completely. Therefore, this research aims to find out the characteristics of e-NIE and the effective way of designing a teaching plan that fits the characteristics of e-NIE.
