Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted to accurately evaluate the in-plane mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs). The FMLs in the current study are comprised of a layer of self-reinforced polypropylene (SRPP) sandwiched between two layers of aluminum alloy 5052-H34. The nonlinear tensile behavior of the FMLs under in-plane loading conditions was investigated using both numerical simulations and a theoretical analysis. The numerical simulation was based on finite element modeling using the ABAQUS/Explicit code and the theoretical constitutive model was based on the volume fraction approach using the rule of mixture and a modification of the classical lamination theory, which incorporates the elastic-plastic behavior of the aluminum alloy and the SRPP. The simulations and the model are used to predict the inplane mechanical properties such as stress-strain response and deformation behavior of the FMLs. In addition, a post-stretching process is used to reduce the thermal residual stresses before uniaxial tensile testing of the FMLs. Through comparison of both the numerical simulations and the theoretical analysis with the experimental results, it is concluded that the numerical simulation model and the theoretical approach can describe with sufficient accuracy the actual tensile stress-strain behavior of the FMLs.
In this study, when the carbon fiber composite was manufactured, the correlation between the porosity and mechanical properties according to the number of glass fiber felts laminated together and the stacking sequence was confirmed. The carbon fiber composite was manufactured by stacking glass fiber felts, which are highly permeable materials, and using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Porosity was measured by photographing the cross-section of the specimen with an optical microscope and then using porosity calculation code of MATLAB, and mechanical properties were measured for tensile strength, modulus by tensile test. Furthermore, Pearson correlation coefficient between porosity and mechanical properties was calculated to confirm the correlation between two variables. As a result, the number of glass fiber felt increased and the distance from the center of laminated composites increased, the porosity increasing were confirmed. In addition, tensile strength/modulus showed a weak positive correlation with porosity. Also, in order to confirm the effect of only porosity on tensile strength and modulus, mechanical properties calculated by CLPT (Classical Laminate Plate Theory) and experimental values were compared, and the difference in tensile strength showed a strong positive correlation with porosity and the difference in modulus showed a weak positive correlation with porosity.

This paper provides a comprehensive study of optimum design of a helicopter tailrotor driveshaft made of the flexible matrix composites (FMCs). Since the driveshaft transmits power while subjected to large bending deformation due to aerodynamic loadings, the FMCs can be ideal for enhancing the drivetrain performance by absorbing the lateral deformation without shaft segmentation. However, the increased lateral flexibility and high internal damping of the FMCs may induce whirling instability at supercritical operating conditions. Thus, the purpose of optimization in this paper is to find a set of tailored FMC parameters that compromise between the lateral flexibility and the whirling stability while satisfying several criteria such as torsional buckling safety and the maximum shaft temperature at steadystate conditions. At first, the drivetrain was modeled based on the finite element method and the classical laminate theory with complex modulus approach. Then, an objective function was defined as a combination of an allowable bending deformation and external damping and a genetic algorithm was applied to search for an optimum set with respect to ply angles and stack sequences. Results show that an optimum laminate consists of two groups of layers: (i) one has ply angles well below 45$^{\circ}$ and the other far above 45$^{\circ}$ and (ii) the number of layers with low ply angles is much bigger than that with high ply angles. It is also found that a thick FMC shaft is desirable for both lateral flexibility and whirling stability. The genetic algorithm was effective in converging to several local optimums, whose laminates exhibit similar patterns as mentioned above.
In this paper, the fracture strength of the surface damaged laminates was predicted by applying the fracture strengths of the unflawed and flawed laminates. For prediction, the theoretical equation about the fracture strength of laminates was simplified applying classical laminate theory and was applied to the surface damaged laminates. Lagace's and Tsai's experimental data were used for verifying the theoretical equation. Moreover, to verify the theoretical prediction, an experiment was performed. Surface unflawed laminate and flawed laminates were fabricated and the experiments were made and these results were compared with theoretical predictions. The specimens' fiber direction was same to the tensile direction and the theoretical predictions and the experimental results were showed good agreement. Therefore, by this equation, the fracture strength of structures made of composites will be able to be predicted when the surface of the structures was damaged.

This paper is concerned with design, manufacturing and performance test of LIPCA ( Lightweight Piezo- composite Curved Actuator) using a top carbon fiber composite layer with near -zero CTE(coefficient of thermal expansion), a middle PZT ceramic wafer and a bottom glass/epoxy layer with high CTE. The main point of this design is to replace the heavy metal layers of THUNDER by thigh tweight fiber reinforced plastic layers without losing capabilities to generate high force and large displacement. It is possible to save weight up to about 30% if we replace the metallic backing material by the light fiber composite layer. We can also have design flexibility by selecting the fiber direction and the size of prepreg layers. In addition to the lightweight advantage and design flexibility, the proposed device can be manufactured without adhesive layers when we use epoxy resin prepreg system. Glass/epoxy prepregs, a ceramic wafer with electrode surfaces, and a graphite/epoxy prepreg were simply stacked and cured at an elevated temperature (177 $^{circ}C$ after following an autoclave bagging process. It was found that the manufactured composite laminate device had a sufficient curvature after detached from a flat mold. The analysis method of the cure curvature of LIPCA using the classical lamination theory is presented. The predicted curvatures are fairly in agreement with the experimental ones. In order to investigate the merits of LIPCA, a performance test of both LIPCA and THUNDE$^{TM}$ were conducted under the same boundary conditions. From the experimental actuation tests, it was observed that the developed actuator could generate larger actuation displacement than THUNDERT$^{TM}$.

In reverse engineering, one of the main tasks is reconstructing the mechanical properties of used materials. For an isotropic material, it could be defined by a single tensile test using a coupon extracted from the structure. In contrast, CFRP composites require many tests and complex procedures to define all the material properties because CFRP is an orthotropic material and a stacked laminate. In this paper, the procedure to reconstruct composite material properties is studied by using the classical lamination theory and the test data of three different laminates from a composite structure. A sample reconstruction of composite material properties using a composite car body is introduced to verify the method.

This paper represents a simple and effective calculation method to predict the orthotropic engineering constants for C/SiC woven fabric composite. The method, a quasi-analytical method using the modified equivalent laminated model, idealizes the woven fabric structure as a symmetric three-ply laminate to utilize a classical laminated plate theory. The required initial parameters are in-plane modulus from experiments and crimp ratio of the woven fabric. This study shows its feasibility by demonstrating example to calculate the engineering constants to thickness direction needed for three dimensional thermo-mechanical stress calculations.
The prediction to the hydroscopic moisture warping behaviors is analyzed for cellulose-based laminates using a numerical method base on a modified classical laminate(MCL) theory for hygroscopic moisture deformations with cycling testing data. The experimental measurement of the interferometric hygroscopic warping effects, moisture generator, and curvature of cellulose reinforced epoxy laminates is studied under cyclic environmental conditions using a Moire interferometer coupled. Accurate determination of curvatures provides a description of dimensional stability evolution; the tools for validation of computational internal stress and for the warpage prediction in model safety.
This research presents an advanced finite element formulation for analyzing the vibratory behaviour of tapered composite shaft rotors, taking into account the impact of the draft angle on the stiffness of the composite shaft laminate. The vibration response of the shaft rotating around its axis is studied using both the finite element hierarchical method and the classical finite element formulation, based on the theory of transverse shear deformation, rotary inertia, gyroscopic effect, and coupling effect due to the stratification of the composite layers of the shaft. The study also includes the development of a program to calculate the Eigen frequencies and critical speeds of the system, and the obtained results are compared with those available in the literature. This research provides valuable insights into the vibratory behaviour of tapered composite shaft rotors and can be useful for designing and optimizing such structures in various industrial applications.

A multi-scale fatigue life prediction methodology of composite pressure vessels subjected to multi-axial loading has been proposed in this paper. The multi-scale approach starts from the constituents, fiber, matrix and interface, leading to predict behavior of ply, laminates and eventually the composite structures. The multi-scale fatigue life prediction methodology is composed of two steps: macro stress analysis and micro mechanics of failure based on fatigue analysis. In the macro stress analysis, multi-axial fatigue loading acting at laminate is determined from finite element analysis of composite pressure vessel, and ply stresses are computed using a classical laminate theory. The micro stresses are calculated in each constituent from ply stresses using a micromechanical model. Three methods are employed in predicting fatigue life of each constituent, i.e. a maximum stress method for fiber, an equivalent stress method for multi-axially loaded matrix, and a critical plane method for the interface. A modified Goodman diagram is used to take into account the generic mean stresses. Damages from each loading cycle are accumulated using Miner's rule. Monte Carlo simulation has been performed to predict the overall fatigue life of a composite pressure vessel considering statistical distribution of material properties of each constituent, fiber volume fraction and manufacturing winding angle.
