In this paper, kinetics of reaction between Bromophenol blue (BPB) and $OH^-$, called fading, has been studied through a spectrophotometric method in the presence of nonionic Triton X-100 (TX-100), anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) surfactants. The influence of changes in the surfactant concentration on the observed rate constant was investigated. The results are treated quantitatively by pseudophase ion-exchange (PPIE) model and a new simple model called "classical model". The binding constants of BPB molecules to the micelles and free molecules of surfactants, their stoichiometric ratios and thermodynamic parameters of binding have been evaluated. It was found that SDS has nearly no effect on the fading rate up to 10 mM, whereas TX-100 and DTAB interact with BPB which reduce the reaction rate. By the use of fading reaction of BPB, the binding constants of SDS molecules to TX-100 micelles and their Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were obtained and when mixtures of DTAB and TX-100 were used, no interaction was observed between these two surfactants.

Microsurgery is a precise surgical skill that requires an extensive training period and the supervision of expert instructors. The classical training schemes in microsurgery have started with multiday experimental courses on the rat model. These courses have offered a low threat supervised high fidelity laboratory setting in which students can steadily and rapidly progress. This simulated environment allows students to make and recognise mistakes in microsurgery techniques and thus shifts any related risks of the early training period from the operating room to the lab. To achieve a high level of skill acquisition before beginning clinical practice, students are trained on a comprehensive set of exercises the rat model can uniquely provide, with progressive complexity as competency improves. This paper presents the utility of the classical rat model in three of the earliest microsurgery training centres and the new prospects that this versatile and expansive training model offers.
In today's organization, measurement plays a crucial role in helping improve process or quality. In this paper, we review the measurement error study, classical gauge repeatability and reproducibility study, and designed experiment suited for the determination of the measurement capability. Measurement error study is very simple to use but is rather crude. Hence, it should be used as a preliminary study to determine whether further study is necessary. Classical gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) study is the most common technique for evaluation of gauge capability. It calculates a percentage that relates the repeatability, reproducibility, and overall R&R to the specification range for the parameter measured. Hence, the individual repeatability and reproducibility statistics will indicate the area on which to concentrate. However, GR&R study only gives a point estimate of each component, which leaves a room for improvement. It is always good to integrate the use of control charts to ascertain the statistical stability of the measurement process. The tools of statistical experimental design are available for a comprehensive design and analysis of the measurement process. Hence, in this paper, we present gauge capability analysis as an experimental design problem and compare it with the classical GR&R study.

Comparative studies of histopathologic lesions from 23 purified protein derivative (PPD) positive cattle, 21 slaughter cattle found with tuberculosis, and 11 tuberculosis-positive elk (Cervus elaphus) were performed. PPD positive cattle did not show specific histopathologic lesions in all 23 heads that were no visible lesion reactor. Slaughter cattle found with tuberculosis revealed microscopically classical granulomatous lesion (tubercle) with central caseous necrosis surrounded by mantle of epithelioid cells and Langhan's giant cells capsuled by connective tissue in lung. Elk was noted with some different lesion patterns with classical granulomatous lesion and suppurative abscesses that was composed of fibrin, degenerated cells without having connective tissue. In addition, many Langhan's giant cells infiltration in alveoli at peripheral lesion were observed in some cases of classical granulomatous lesion and suppurative abscesses.
Free vibration of a thin-walled laminated composite beam is studied. A general analytical model applicable to the dynamic behavior of a thin-walled channel section composite is developed. This model is based on the classical lamination theory, and accounts for the coupling of flexural and torsional modes for arbitrary laminate stacking sequence configuration. i.e. unsymmetric as well as symmetric, and various boundary conditions. A displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to predict natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes for a thin-walled composite beam. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite addressing the effects of fiber angle. modulus ratio. and boundary conditions on the vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the composites.
An isolated building, composed of superstructure and isolation system which have very different damping properties, is typically non-classical damping system. This results in inapplicability of traditional response spectrum method for isolated buildings. A multidimensional response spectrum method based on complex mode superposition is herein introduced, which properly takes into account the non-classical damping feature in the structure and a new method is developed to estimate velocity spectra from the commonly used displacement or pseudo-acceleration spectra based on random vibration theory. The error of forced decoupling method, an approximated approach, is discussed in the viewpoint of energy transfer. From the base-isolated benchmark model, as a numerical example, application of the procedure is illustrated companying with comparison study of time-history method, forced decoupling method and the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is valid, while forced decoupling approach can't reflect the characteristics of isolated buildings and may lead to insecurity of structures.
We study Diriclet forms and related subjects for the Gibbs measures of classical unbounded sping systems interacting via potentials which are superstable and regular. For any Gibbs measure $\mu$, we construct a Dirichlet form and the associated diffusion process on $L^2(\Omega, d\mu), where \Omega = (R^d)^Z^\nu$. Under appropriate conditions on the potential we show that the Dirichlet operator associated to a Gibbs measure $\mu$ is essentially self-adjoint on the space of smooth bounded cylinder functions. Under the condition of uniform log-concavity, the Gibbs measure exists uniquely and there exists a mass gap in the lower end of the spectrum of the Dirichlet operator. We also show that under the condition of uniform log-concavity, the unique Gibbs measure satisfies the log-Sobolev inequality. We utilize the general scheme of the previous works on the theory in infinite dimensional spaces developed by e.g., Albeverio, Antonjuk, Hoegh-Krohn, Kondratiev, Rockner, and Kusuoka, etc, and also use the equilibrium condition and the regularity of Gibbs measures extensively.
Objectives : This study aims to analyze the co-occurrence of pathological symptoms and corresponding acupoints as documented by the comprehensive acupuncture and moxibustion records in the classical texts of Far East traditional medicine as an aid to a more efficient understanding of the tacit treatment principles of ancient physicians. Methods : The Classic of Nourishing Life with Acupuncture and Moxibustion(Zhenjiu Zisheng Jing; hereinafter ZZJ) was selected as the primary reference book for the analysis. The pathology-acupoint co-occurrence analysis was performed by applying 4 values of vector space measures(weighted Euclidean distance, Euclidean distance, $Cram\acute{e}r^{\prime}s$ V and Canberra distance), which measure the distance between the observed and expected co-occurrence counts, and 3 values of probabilistic measures(association strength, Fisher's exact test and Jaccard similarity), which measure the probability of observed co-occurrences. Results : The treatment records contained in ZZJ were preprocessed, which yielded 4162 pathology-acupoint sets. Co-occurrence was performed applying 7 different analysis variables, followed by a prediction simulation. The prediction simulation results revealed the Weighted Euclidean distance had the highest prediction rate with 24.32%, followed by Canberra distance(23.14%) and association strength(21.29%). Conclusions : The weighted Euclidean distance among the vector space measures and the association strength among the probabilistic measures were verified to be the most efficient analysis methods in analyzing the correlation between acupoints and pathologies found in the classical medical texts.
To establish a statistically reliable sampling strategy for serological surveillance of classical swinefever (CSF) in Korea, antibody test data from CSF surveillance conducted during year 2005 were analyzed. The most appropriate sampling method was determined to be stratified multi-stage random sampling strategy,in which the primary sampling unit is a pig farm and the secondary are the pigs by the strata of breedersand finishers in the selected farm. The optimum sample size was 5 to 19 including 1 to 2 breeders accordingto the number of pigs in the farm. The optimum sampling strategy demonstrated in this study was veryFindings of our study provide practical guidelines for surveillance of herd immunity level to CSF in Korea.
The majority of soil microorganisms can derive ethylene from L-methionine (L-MET), while some rhizobacteria can hydrolyze 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) due to their ACC-deaminase activity. In this study, three strains having either ACC-deaminase activity (Pseudomonas putida biotype A, $A_7$), or the ability to produce ethylene from L-MET (Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, $M_9$) or both (Pseudomonas fluorescens, $AM_3$) were used for inoculation. The highly ethylene specific bioassay of a classical 'triple' response in pea seedlings was used to investigate the effect of the inoculation with the rhizobacteria in the presence of 10 mM ACC or L-MET. The exogenous application of ACC had a concentration-dependent effect on the etiolated pea seedlings in creating the classical 'triple' response. The inoculation with P. putida diluted the effect of ACC, which was most likely due to its ACC-deaminase activity. Similarly, the application of $Co^{2+}$ reduced the ACC-imposed effect on etiolated pea seedlings. In contrast, the inoculation of A. calcoaceticus or P. fluorescens in the presence of L-MET caused a stronger classical 'triple' response in etiolated pea seedlings; most likely by producing ethylene from L-MET. This is the first study, to our knowledge, reporting on the comparative effect of rhizobacteria capable of utilizing ACC vs L-MET on etiolated pea seedlings.
