A Comparative Study on Online Civic Journalism Practice and Civic Influence in the U.S. and Korea - Focus on News about the 'Oil Price' (온라인 시민저널리즘 양상과 시민 영향력에 관한 한.미 간 비교 연구 - '유가' 관련 보도를 중심으로)

  • Korea has started to pay attention to civic journalism in recent years while it initially emerged in the United State since late 1980s. Furthermore, albeit some discernable limitations, the Internet has played an important role in fertilizing civic journalism as indicated by the emergence of online news media and the increasing number of civic journalists engaged in the online activities. Whereas there are some patterns of civic journalism practice and the civic influence commonly observed in both countries, there are significant factors that distinguish th1e case of Korea from that of the U.S. The purpose of this study is to compare the two countries in terms of the patterns of civic journalism practice and civic influence. This goal has been achieved by analyzing ‘CNN iReport’ in the U.S. and ‘Ohmynews’ in Korea, both of which are prime civic journalism websites. Those websites have been compared in light of four standards of civic journalism: first, the degree of post-objectivism; second, the search for effective resolutions of social problems; third, civic engagement in the news making process to enhance bottom-up agenda setting; and finally, citizens’ interaction with the news. The results reveal that the American civic journalism website is more likely to shed light on deviating from the principle of objectivity and seeking alternatives and resolutions of social problems. Moreover, it effectively utilizes civic engagement in the news Abstracts 551 making process as indicated by the higher numbers of civic journalists and civic news resources. Also, readers’ interaction with the news was found to be more active in the iReport website than in the Ohmynews.

Analysis of the effects of digital privacy security awareness and digital civic engagement on digital privacy protection behavior : focusing on volition and horizontality (디지털 개인 보안 인식과 디지털 시민 참여의식이 디지털 개인 정보보호 행동에 미치는 영향 분석: 자의성과 수평성을 중심으로)

  • The aim of this study to analyze the effect of person and situation on digital privacy protection behaviors. The research method design is a factorial design of volition and horizontality. The measurement variables used in the investigation are digital privacy security awareness, digital civic engagement, and digital privacy protection behavior. As a result, the volition had a significant effect on digital privacy protection behavior, and it was found that influence of the high-volition-based condition was greater than the low-volition-based condition. The horizontality had a significant effect on digital privacy security awareness, digital civic engagement, and it was found that influence of the high-horizontality-based condition was greater than the low-horizontality-based condition. In addition, the discussion explains the suitable contents of information security usability based on these research results.

Is Civic Service the Real Antipode of Volunteer Work? - Focusing on AmeriCorps and Senior Corps in the United States (시민서비스는 자원봉사의 대척점에 있는가? - 미국의 AmeriCorps와 Senior Corps를 중심으로)

  • Recently interest in civic engagement and civic service is increasing. However, in Korea, few studies have focused on civic service. This might be on account of general awareness that civic service is fundamentally different from the basic spirit of voluntary work, while interest in paid volunteer work is on the rise. Thus, it is necessary to examine whether civic service is the real antipode of volunteer work. Under this kind of critical viewpoint, this study aims to analyze civic service based on the attributes of voluntary work and civic service. The major findings are as follows. Firstly, contrary to common belief, civic service has not been established to go beyond the principle of voluntary and unpaid characteristics of volunteer work. Rather, some voluntary work has broken out of principle of voluntary activities. Secondly, civic service and volunteer work might be characterized as different not due to spontaneity and unpaid service but the structural characteristics of the goal, continuity and formality. Furthermore, the reason for the soft landing of civic service in the United States is not because they have supported the reimbursement of expenses and the provision of stipends. Rather, it is because their long-term activities have promoted real community development for the purpose of finding solutions to social problems, and they have derived a sense of pride and satisfaction from social recognition and rewards for their contributions.

  • This study aims to analyze the research trends on the civic participation in a smart city and to present implications to policy makers, industry professionals and researchers. As rapid urbanization is defining development trend of modern city, urban problems such as transportation, environment, and energy are spreading and intensifying around the city. Countries around the world are introducing smart cities to solve these urban problems and to achieve sustainable development. Recently, many countries are modifying urban planning from top-down to down-up by actively engaging citizens to participate in the urban construction process directly and indirectly. Although the construction of smart cities is being promoted in Korea to solve urban problems, awareness of smart cities and civic participation are low. In order to overcome this situation, discussions on ideas and methods that can increase civic participation in smart cities are continuously being conducted. Therefore, in this study, by collecting publication containing both 'Smart Cities' and 'Participation (Engagement)' in Scopus DB, the topics of related studies were categorized and research trends were analyzed using topic modeling. Through this study, it is expected that it can be used as evidence to understand the direction of civic participation research in smart cities and to present the direction of related research in the future.

Christian Religious Education's Enchanting Duty : A Curriculum of Hope from the Underside of Civic Polarization, Moral Disimagination, and Learned Helplessness (책임을 노래하는 기독교적 종교교육 : 시민적 양극성, 도덕적 무감각, 학습된 무력감의 저변에서 시작된 희망의 교육과정)

  • This study addresses the crucial role of Christian Religious Education (CRE) amidst civic polarization, moral disimagination, and learned helplessness. It begins her personal background as a 1.5-generation Vietnamese American and her academic engagement in immigrant faith and the challenges of teaching faith in violent contexts. The work underscores the public dimension and impact of religious education, highlighting its potential for fostering critical capacities for public engagement. However, that study observes a prevalent disconnection between congregational culture and the aim of public engagement, leading to a form of learned helplessness among students and communities. The researcher draws on Paulo Freire's concepts of "critical hope" and the need for a curriculum that transcends mere content delivery to foster transformative engagement with societal issues. The document critiques the disimigination machine that undermines critical thinking and collective resistance, as articulated by Henry Giroux, and explores the concepts of "learned helplessness" as a barrier to environmental and social activism. The researcher advocates for a theopoetic and theopolitical approach to education that nurtures hope and practical engagement with the world's injustice. She emphasizes small acts of theopoetic and theopolitical hope as transformative practices, using an example from Ferguson, Missouri, to illustrate how public liturgy and protest can mediate hope and justice. The document concludes with a call for a life-long, life-wide, and life-deep curriculum of enchantment towards responsible participation in societal repair, rooted in Christian hope.

Community Services of University: A Case Study of Chonnam National University (대학의 지역사회 봉사: 전남대학을 사례로)

  • This article shows how the university can contribute to regional development through its public services. To that end, this article firstly tried to examine the functions and activities of the universities in civic engagement. Secondly the actual contents and various programs of the Chonnam National University located in Kwangju, South Korea are analyzed as a case study. It is seen that Chonnam National University is emphasizing the civic engagements in terms of continuing educations, openings of the facilities, and volunteers services or social works of the students. But the more active connections between university and its community are still needed for the enhanced responsibility of the faculty about public services and for the enduring civic engagements.

  • This article analyzes the latest cases of Digital Social Innovation such as crowdsourcing and online petitions for public trouble-shooting in oder to demonstrate that public engagement of the citizens on decision making can enhance the quality of democracy. Digital Social Innovation contributes to citizen's participation on decision making and policy implementation with taking advantage of digital technologies of crowdsourcing and online petitions. Active civic engagement for decision making literally helps to improve and democratize government policy. These series of processes not only improve quality and efficiency of policy governance by building up transparency and effectiveness of policy itself but also enhance the throughput legitimacy. With this article, I quote and analyze various practices of Digital Social Innovation which we had substantiated to demonstrate the effectiveness of civic engagement for decision making to improve and enhance democracy. The hypothesis that the Digital Social Innovation attempted in various ways is a principal factor of democratization could be verified. Moreover, the practices of Digital Social Innovation helps the civic participation in policy making in modern society. Finally, this article suggests an implication of Digital Social Innovation as part of efforts to ensure the involvement of throughput legitimacy for the development of democracy.

Exploring the Views of College Students in STEM Fields on the Social Responsibility of Scientists and Engineers (과학기술자의 사회적 책임에 대한 이공계 대학생의 인식 탐색)

  • This study aimed to investigate the views of STEM college students on the social responsibility of scientists and engineers. A total of 660 students in STEM majors at several Korean universities participated in the study. We assessed social responsibility among college students in STEM majors using the VSRoSE scale, which taps into eight different domains of social responsibility: Concern for human welfare and safety (HUMAN), Concern for environmental sustainability (ENVIR), Consideration of societal risks and consequences (CONSEQ), Consideration of societal risks and consequences (CONSEQ), Consideration of societal needs and demands (NEEDS), Pursuit of the common good (COMGOOD), Civic engagement and services (CIVIC), Communication with the public (COMMU), and Participation in policy decision-making (POLICY). Group differences in social responsibility by gender, majors, and years in school were examined. Mean scores in HUMAN, ENVIR, and CONSEQ were relatively higher than those in NEEDS, COMGOOD, CIVIC, COMMU, and POLICY. Cluster analysis identified five different groups with similar patterns of social responsibility scores. In addition to two groups with overall high and low scores across all eight factors of VSRoSE, three additional groups with different combinations of high and low scores in different factors were identified. The results indicated that students with low social responsibility are not homogeneous and these heterogeneous sub-groups of students will need tailored interventions highlighting different factors of social responsibility that they lack. Pedagogical implications of social responsibility for education were discussed.

  • This paper describes the intent of learners to acquire university education, the basis for selecting study courses, the means to assess the quality of higher education, what the challenges faced by the learners are, as well as suggestions for improvement. The design and system thinking approach has been adapted to address the well-being issues of B40 young people in Bangladesh, through understanding their need, followed by building conceptual business models using modeling tools, i.e., Business Model Canvas (BMC) and Value Proposition Canvas (VPC) model. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the contribution and the role of a Malaysian University to solve problems of quality of higher education in Bangladesh and what initiatives should be taken to overcome this problem. This paper offers a validated conceptual Malaysian University of the Future (UotF) business model with the focus on international community engagement programs to help Bangladeshi students to acquire knowledge, abilities, skills, and values toward developing a harmonious and sustainable society. The contribution of this paper is the presentation of a conceptual, validated business model in both BMC and VPC formats. This conceptual business model can further be applied to civic engagement operations by other universities.

Differentiated impacts of SNSs on Participatory Social Capital in Korea

  • This study investigates whether different SNS with different characteristics have different impacts on participatory social capital in Korea. At least in Korea, SNS are categorized into five types (community, blog, micro-blog, profile-based service and instant message service), and participatory social capital is specified by three types (off-line political participation, on-line political participation, on-line civic engagement). Using Nielsen KoreanClick's web-based survey data, our regression analysis shows that SNS which are more open and focused on information sharing contribute more to participatory social capital.
