  • The purpose of this research was to investigate cognitive differences between the processes making hyperlinking and citing decisions as perceived by scholarly authors themselves. 15 Indiana University faculty and doctoral students who had published at least one scholarly electronic paper containing at least one external hyperlink were interviewed. Four different types of hyperlinking behaviors were emerged from the interview data. The findings of the study revealed that there are no consensually agreed-upon conventions on the use of hyperlinks in scholarly environments although the majority of the authors tend to follow the implicit norms of conventional citation practices.

  • This study analyzes types of primary sources cited by South Korean civil engineers. The results are as follows: 1) primary sources by preference are academic journal (55.7%), book (15.6%), seminar contents (10.2%). 2) documents published within last 10 years (26.1%) are cited most often. 3) domestic journal is the primary academic journal cited, and the finding is similar in preference of top-ranked primary reference (domestic and foreign combined). 4) In terms of time, domestic sources are preferred for up-to-date publications, and foreign sources for relatively non-recent publications. 5) The indices of influence and extemporaneity for both domestic and foreign sources do not show high numbers simultaneously.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the citing behaviors of researchers in the field of mechanical engineering. It tries to verify if there is a significant difference on citing behavior of researchers between the past and the present with dissertations produced in P University as samples. For the comparison, years 1996 and 2004 are selected for the citation analysis. It analyzed four aspects, such as types of resources cited, languages used in cited documents, years since their publication of cited documents, and the journals indexed in SCI. The results of the analysis are; First, journals are the most cited than any other types of information resources. The citation of WWW resources which are gradually increasing for research is not shown in 1996, but there were some cited in 2004. Second, doctoral candidates usually cite document in English for their study. Statistics show that the use of resources in Japanese is on the decrease. Third, doctoral candidates in the discipline prefer materials published within 4-7 years, 8-11 years rather than 0-3 years since their publication. Last, journals indexed in SCI among the citation in dissertations are about 33 percent for both 1996 and 2004.

  • Wikipedia represents a revolutionary experiment in the sense that it allows anonymous Internet users to contribute, change, and edit Encyclopedia contents used by tens of millions of people. While a very popular information source on the Internet, because of its questionable information credibility and accuracy, citing Wikipedia articles is being regarded as a risky behavior for scholars. The present study identified 282 scholarly articles from Thomson Reuters' Web of Science citation database that cite Wikipedia at least once. Out of the millions of articles indexed in Web of Science, the proportion of articles citing Wikipedia is extremely small. On the other hand, the numbers are showing a marked increase since 2011. Wikipedia citing articles are distributed in subject areas, such as library and information science, business, psychology, education, and communication more often than in other areas. The distribution of a total of 577 citations from 267 articles for which we were able to obtain full texts shows that Wikipedia is being cited mainly in studies of Wikipedia (139 citations, 24.1%) or as a ready reference source (331 citations, 57.4%). At the same time, about 15% of total citations turned out to be cases of potentially risky behaviors in which Wikipedia is being cited as a crucial basis or data source for study.

  • Digitalized data and literature in scholarly community has developed the concept of digital humanities and cyberscholarship which indicate the characteristics of a new aspect and approach in scholarly activities with digitalized resources or new media. This study was performed in order to identify the changes in national research activities of art and humanities by using a multi-modal approach. The combined methodology of in-depth interview and content analysis on publishing and citing behaviors in literature was executed. The steps of research process is identified as a non-linear combination of 3 parts: developing research idea, developing the research idea to write, and submitting manuscript to publish. Prominent implementations of cyberscholarship were found in the 2nd step for accessing and using research data and literatures. Understanding the characteristics of scholar communication using cyberscholarhip factors in humanities for interdisciplinarity, sophisticating the environment of cyberscholarhip for data sharing, investing and developing archivist and archives, and providing a various platform for accelerating scholarly communication were derived by the panel discussion for developing interdisciplinary research for humanities.

  • In this study, the characteristics of Mongsimjae in Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do have been researched focusing on the writings engraved in huge stones and rocks of pavilion standing beside a lotus pond and its formative languages in the garden has been interpreted as follows. Name of pavilion(堂號) Mongsimjae(夢心齋) includes a classical scholar's spirit, refusing to serve two kings and homecoming after resignation from a government office(歸去來) of Songam(松菴) Park Moonsu(朴門壽), an ancestor who has brought to the Juksan(竹山) Park's family again. A pavilion standing beside a lotus pond(蓮塘) built in the reception garden is a gardening facility symbolizing 'Yeondang(蓮堂)' Park Dongsik(朴東式) who built Mongsimjae. The bamboo hill connected to the backyard seems to be relevant to 'Juksan', the family clan of Mongsimjae's owner and this kinds of intention can be found in the bamboos in the outer garden naturally led to inside the garden through the flower beds. The purpose for the western arrangement of the main building and gate contrary to the 'chukjwamihyaug'(丑坐未向; a direction toward to the south-southwest) of the prospect of Sarangchae(guesthouse) is interpreted to naturally attract people's eyes to the pavilion standing beside a lotus pond and to mitigate the sense of closure resulting from the huge stones located in the reception garden. Also the writing engraved in the three huge stones, 'Jonsimdae(存心臺)', implies that it is a place where was selected with heart by Juksan Park family who settled down in Homsil, Namwon after 'Haengchon(杏村) Park Jaryang(朴子良)' in Yiphyangjo(入鄕祖), Namwon and 'Jeongwa(靖窩)' is interpreted as a signature representing that it is the most comfortable house where Jeongwa Park Haechang(朴海昌: 1876~1933), the third owner of Mongsimjae, has lived. The pavilion standing beside a lotus pond of the 'Bangjibangdo(方池方島; square pond and square island)' type has no lotus for now and waterside cornerstones roughly piled with broken stones naturally mitigate the slope. There are two water inflows gathering rainwater in the reception garden other than the water inflow of valley and the upper-side water inflow was built using a high waterfall method. The middle island cut into a square was designed to use in two ways, as 'island' or 'steppingstone', according to the water level and the old name of the pavilion standing beside a lotus pond was revealed as 'Cheonundam(天雲潭)' from the engraved writing located in the side of the middle island. In addition, 'Imni(臨履)', engraved writing in the finishing stone of waterside by citing a line of 'Sigyeong(詩經)', implies 'Be a upright classical scholar who pays close attention to one's own behaviors' and 'Jeongchuk(渟?)' is interpreted as a message that desires the eternal staying of the Juksan Park family's wealth. Ultimately, the writings engraved in the huge stones and rocks of the pavilion standing beside a lotus pond are interpreted as a symbol language that wishes the heaven protects and maintains the wealth of the Juksan Park family who is the owner of Mongsimjae.
