  • A new digital media ear started a couple of months ago when 10 major cities in USA first boradcasted the all digital HDTV on the air. Digital video compression has been studied for decades but only recently, it becomes practical and is used in our daily life. We give an overview of the progress of video compression in recent years, particularly, the ones related to international standards. Through examples, we like to introduce this fantastic subject to the readers who were not familiar with it before.

  • As abnormal climate phenomena occur more frequently due to climate change, damage which results from meteorological disaster increases accordingly and its scale and variety are becoming wider. This paper draws out planning and design elements and application techniques to build cities more adaptive to climate change from urban development cases in US and Europe. An urban model is suggested, that enables built environment to be more resilient to risks caused by climate change is applicable to urban development projects in practice.

  • This study tested major determinants of customer satisfaction and loyalty by varying degrees of customers' knowledge level. Also, authors investigated the degrees of those impacts by classifying industries into two groups(service/manufacturing). Based on 4,000 completed surveys from five major cities, authors found the relationship among perceived quality, perceived value, and corporate image with customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. As a result, corporate image(extrinsic cue) was a major determinant to customers who are low knowledgeable and impacts of corporate image on customer satisfaction was stronger in service industry than manufacturing industry.

  • At high redshift, unlike local, many galaxy clusters are still at their stages of building. Likewise, they show a wide range in their star formation properties: some are still forming stars actively unlike their local counterparts, while others have very low level of star formation already. Here we report the two high-redshift (z~1) galaxy clusters, confirmed via Magellan MOS observation. While existing at similar redshift and having similar mass, these two clusters show very different quiescent galaxy fraction. The origin of this difference is investigated, and will be presented in the presentation.

  • This study presents the extent of disparity of human capital across regions, its trend, and the impact of aging on it, using Korean census data of years 1985, 1995, and 2005. Main results are as follows. First, the absolute level of human capital in cities and districts have increased, but the relative positions of those regions have not changed over time. Second, the proportion of college graduated tends to increase as the size of cities increases. Third, following Berry and Glaeser(2005), the increase in the proportion of college graduated is regressed on the initial proportion and the estimates indicate that the disparity of human capital across regions has increased over time. Fourth, the proportion of aging population is shown to have a negative relationship with the proportion of college graduated. Finally, using a counter-factual scenario that there were no differences in proportions of aging population across regions, it is shown that the disparity of human capital across regions could be reduced substantially.

  • Recently, many cities and regions of the world attempt to promote cultural and arts activities in order to vitalize regional economies and strengthen local identity. Some old industrial cities of the advanced economies in particular often introduce cultural and arts activities in renovating obsolete urban infra-structure, revitalize urban economy, clean polluted urban environment, and advertise various development projects. A small Canadian city, Stratford, Ontario, has shown a spectacular success in such efforts. By hosting Shakespearian festivals every year since 1953, the theatre company, the Shakespearian Festival of Canada in Stratford, sells about 600 thousands tickets, attracting 2 million visitors to the area. With the festivals, the city became able to host a large cultural cluster composed of the theatre company, chef school, summer music festival, and Chicago Associates. The city has also able to maintain one of the most competent theatre companies in the North America.
