국내 원형교차로 사고모형 (Accident Models of Circular Intersections in Korea)

  • This study deals with the accidents of circular intersections in Korea. The goal is to develop the accident models for 94 circular intersections. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to collecting the data of geometric structure and accidents, and comparatively analyzing such the models as Poisson and NB regression and multiple regression model using SPSS 17.0 and LIMDEP 3.0. The main results are as follows. First, the negative binomial model among various models was analyzed to be the most appropriate. Second, 3 independent variables was adopted in the model, and these variables was analyzed to have a positive relation to the accident rate. Finally, the reduced width of circulatory roadway, removal of the parking lot within circulatory roadway and appropriate levels of approach lane were required to improve the safety of circular intersection.

  • 이 연구는 국내 원형교차로에서 발생한 교차로 사고를 다루고 있다. 연구의 목적은 ZAM을 이용하여 원인별 사고모형을 개발하는데 있다. 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교차로 운행방법 위반에서는 ZINB 모형이 적합한 것으로 분석되었다. 둘째, 안전거리 미확보에서도 ZINB 모형이 적합한 것으로 분석되었다. 마지막으로 공통변수로는 교통량과 회전차로 폭이 선정되었다. 교통량이 많을수록 그리고 회전차로 폭이 좁을수록 사고가 많이 발생하는 것으로 분석되었다. 특정변수로는 접근로수와 감속 시설수가 채택되었고, 접근로수가 증가할수록 그리고 감속시설수가 적을수록 사고가 증가하는 것으로 분석되었다. 이 연구는 원형교차로 사고연구에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

가산자료 모형을 이용한 국내 원형교차로 유형별 교통사고 분석 (Analysis of Traffic Accident by Circular Intersection Type in Korea Using Count Data Model)

  • This study aims to develop the traffic accident models by circular intersection type using count data model. The number of accident, the number of fatal and injured persons(FSI), and EPDO are calculated from the traffic accident data of TAAS. The circular intersection accident models are developed through Poisson and negative binomial regression analysis. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the null hypotheses that there are differences in the number of traffic accidents, FSI and EPDO by type of circular intersections are rejected. Second, the scale of intersection(median, large), number of approach road, mean width and length of exit road, area of the circulating roadway and central island are selected as factors influencing the number of traffic accidents, FSI and EPDO in rotary. Third, the scale of intersection(median), guide signs(limited speed, direction, roundabout), number of approach road, entry angle, area of the intersection and central island are adopted as factors influencing the number of traffic accidents, FSI and EPDO in roundabout. Finally, transferring from rotary to roundabout could be expected to make the accident decrease.

  • This paper deals with the traffic factors related to the collisions of circular intersections. The purpose of this study is to develop traffic accident models by type of collision based on land use. In pursuing the above, the traffic accident data from 2010 to 2014 were collected from the "Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS)" data set of the Road Traffic Authority. A multiple regression model was utilized in this study to develop the traffic accident models by type of collision. 17 explanatory variables such as geometry and traffic volume factors were used. The main results are as follows. First, the null hypothesis that the type of land use does not affect the number of accidents by type of collision is rejected. Second, 10 accident models by type of collision based on land use are developed, which are all statistically significant. Finally, the ADT, inscribed circle diameter, bicycle lane, area of central island, number of speed hump, circulatory roadway width, splitter island, area of circulatory roadway, mean number of entry lane and mean width of entry lane are analyzed to see how they affect accident by type of accident based on land use.

토지이용과 차종에 근거한 원형교차로 사고분석 및 논의 (Accident Analysis and Discussion of Circular Intersections based on Land Use and Vehicle Type)

  • PURPOSES : This study aimed to analyze traffic accidents at circular intersections, and discuss accident reduction strategies based on land use and vehicle type. METHODS : Traffic accident data from 2010 to 2014 were collected from the "traffic accident analysis system" (TAAS) data set of the Road Traffic Authority. To develop the accident rate model, a multiple linear regression model was used. Explanatory variables such as geometry and traffic volume were used to develop the models. RESULTS : The main results of the study are as follows. First, it was found that the null hypotheses that land use and vehicle type do not affect the accident rate should be rejected. Second, 16 accident rate models, which are statistically significant (with high $R^2$ values), were developed. Finally, the area of the central island, number of speed humps, entry lane width, circulatory roadway width, bus stops, and pedestrian crossings were analyzed to determine their effect on accidents according to the type of land use and vehicle. CONCLUSIONS : Through the developed accident rate models, it was revealed that the accident factors at circular intersections changed depending on land use and vehicle type. Thus, selecting the appropriate location of bus stops for trucks, widening entry lanes for cars, and installing splitter islands and optimal lighting for motorcycles were determined to be important for reducing the accident rate. Additionally, the evaluation showed that commercial and mixed land use had a weaker effect on accidents than residential land use.

Seismic Performance and Retrofit of Circular Bridge Piers with Spliced Longitudinal Steel

  • It is known that lap splice in the longitudinal reinforcement of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge columns is not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets, and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splice. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled way under three different axial load levels. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios was observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.

  • Some as-built drawings in national roadway bridges in Korea were examined. There are many bridge piers, whose aspect ratios are in the vicinity of 2.5. These columns are expected to do shear-flexure behaviour and have large scale effect between full and reduced scale model. In the study, full and 1/2 scale model tests on the shear-flexure behaviour columns were carried out.   • Recently, there are much concerns about new and innovative transverse materials which could be used instead of conventional transverse steel in reinforced concrete bridge piers. FRP materials could be substituted for conventional transverse steel because of their sufficient strength, light weight, easy fabrication, and useful applicability to any shapes of pier sections, such as rectangular or circular sections. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge pier specimens with FRP transverse reinforcement by means of the Quasi-Static test. In the first task, test columns were made using FRP rope, but these specimens appeared to fail at low displacement ductility levels due to insufficient confinement of strand extension itself. Therefore, the second task was to evaluate the seismic performance of test specimens transversely confined with FRP band. Although FRP banded specimens showed lower seismic performance than the specimen with spiral reinforcing steel, it satisfied with the response modification factor, 3, required for the single column of Korea bridge roadway design code. It was concluded that FRP band could be efficiently substituted for conventional reinforcing steel.

섬유보강 원형 철근콘크리트 교각의 내진성능 향상에 관한 유사동적 실험 (Pseudo Dynamic Test for the Seismic Performance Enhancement of Circular RC Bridge Piers Retrofitted with Fibers)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 유사동적실험에 의한 섬유보강 원형철근콘크리트교각의 내진성능평가를 위한 연구로서 수원시에 위치한 내진설계된 교량인 하갈교를 대상모델로 하였다. 도로교설계기준의 내진설계규정이 적용되지 않은 비내진실험체 2개 및 내진설계 규정에 따라 설계된 내진실험체 2개 그리고 내진성능향상을 위해 비내진실험체를 보강한 섬유보강실험체 4개 즉 총 8개에 대하여 유사동적실험을 수행하였다. 보강공법으로는 유리섬유 및 탄소섬유 보강공법을 사용하였으며, 실험변수로는 내진 및 비내진설계, 하중형식, 섬유보강유무로 하였다. 내진성능평가 방법은 소산에너지, 변위연성도 그리고 능력스펙트럼이 분석되었다. 실험결과로 유리 및 탄소섬유로 보강된 비내진실험체의 변위연성도는 KHC인공지진파에 대하여 7.7~8.7정도의 값으로서 충분한 내진성능을 확보하고 있는 것으로 평가되었다.

Numerical modelling of a pile-supported embankment using variable inertia piles

  • The increasing lack of good quality soils allowing the development of roadway, motorway, or railway networks, as well as large scale industrial facilities, necessitates the use of reinforcement techniques. Their aim is the improvement of the global performance of compressible soils, both in terms of settlement reduction and increase of the load bearing capacity. Among the various available techniques, the improvement of soils by incorporating vertical stiff piles appears to be a particularly appropriate solution, since it is easy to implement and does not require any substitution of significant soft soil volumes. The technique consists in driving a group of regularly spaced piles through a soft soil layer down to an underlying competent substratum. The surface load being thus transferred to this substratum by means of those reinforcing piles, which illustrates the case of a piled embankment. The differential settlements at the base of the embankment between the soft soil and the stiff piles lead to an "arching effect" in the embankment due to shearing mechanisms. This effect, which can be accentuated by the use of large pile caps, allows partial load transfer onto the pile, as well as surface settlement reduction, thus ensuring that the surface structure works properly. A technique for producing rigid piles has been developed to achieve in a single operation a rigid circular pile associated with a cone shaped head reversed on the place of a rigid circular pile. This technique has been used with success in a pile-supported road near Bourgoin-Jallieu (France). In this article, a numerical study based on this real case is proposed to highlight the functioning mode of this new technique in the case of industrial slabs.
