Inflammatory conditions mediated by activated microglia lead to chronic neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. This study was conducted to determine the effect of floridoside isolated from marine red algae Laurencia undulata on LPS (100 ng/ml) activated inflammatory responses in BV-2 microglia cells. The results show that floridoside has the ability to suppress pro-inflammatory responses in microglia by markedly inhibiting the production of nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, floridoside down-regulated the protein and gene expression levels of iNOS and COX-2 by significantly blocking the phosphorylation of p38 and ERK in BV-2 cells. Collectively, these results indicate that floridoside has the potential to be developed as an active agent for the treatment of neuro-inflammation.

Fermented fish (jeotkal) has been used as a method of preserving perishable fish and marine products. Recently, however, high salted jeotkal (20% and more) has avoided from consumer by reasons of organoleptic quality (high salinity), health value (degenerative chronic disease), and hygienic safety. Among these jeotkals, meanwhile, sikhae (lactic acid fermented fishes) has been traditionally favored in the eastern coastal area of Korea, which contain below 10% of salt content with acidic range (pH4∼5). Purpose: This study aims to explore the correlation between job and hypertension. Hypertension is a major risk factor such as stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and vascular aneurysms. Research design, data and methodology: The data from this study are the 2017 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey classified into office workers and non-office workers. Frequency analysis was used for general characteristics analysis, and ANOVA test analysis was used for correlation between subjects' basic variables and blood pressure. The post analysis as turey was used to verify the validity of the statistical results. All statistical analyzes were performed using the IBM SPSS 24.0 program. Results: There was a difference in the prevalence of hypertension among office workers and non-office workers.
Aortic valve stenosis is a heart disease prevalent in the elderly characterized by valvular calcification, fibrosis, and inflammation, but its exact pathogenesis remains unclear. Previously, aortic valve stenosis was thought to be caused by chronic passive and degenerative changes associated with aging. However, recent studies have demonstrated that atherosclerotic processes and inflammation can induce valvular calcification and bone deposition, leading to valvular stenosis. In particular, the most abundant cell type in cardiac valves, valvular interstitial cells, can differentiate into myofibroblasts and osteoblast-like cells, leading to valvular calcification and stenosis. Differentiation of valvular interstitial cells can be trigged by inflammatory stimuli from several immune cell types, including macrophages, dendritic cells, T cells, B cells, and mast cells. This review indicates that crosstalk between immune cells and valvular interstitial cells plays an important role in the development of aortic valve stenosis.
As the average life span has been lengthened and the rate of senile population has been raised, chronic degenerative diseases incident to aging have been increased rapidly and become a social problem. With this social background, recently, oxygen radicals(OR) have toxic effects on Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System and cause neuropathy such as Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer Disease. The purpose of this study is to examine the toxic effects caused by Xanthine Oxidase(XO) and the effects of herbal extracts such as Jokihaeatang(JHT) on the treatment of the toxic effects. For this purpose, experiments with the cultured cell from the cerebrums of new born mice were done. The results of these experiments were as follows. 1. X0, an oxygen radical, decreased the survival rate of the cultured cells on NR assay, MTT assay and amount of neurofilaments and increased the amount of lipid peroxidation. 2. JHT have efficacy of increasing the amount of neurofilaments.
The health care environment exerts tremendous influence on community health practices. Here the author mention several major factors that will influence the future plan for health service and health education; that is, economic problem, the issues of decrement of infectious disease, increment of chronic degenerative disease due to natural increase of the elderly, increased frequency of traffic and industrial accidents and the issues of medical-technological advances etc. Therefore, special efforts by health personnel should be made to develop health education and health promotion strategies on a community-wide basis. Accordingly, the flexible accessibility, convenient availability, guaranteed medical service, sufficient supply of health information, and rapidly available medicaid service for special population such as the elderly, the handicapped, the disabled and the poor are considered. Also, the financial support from the central government and local self-government and active participation of health consumer to health service are needed in Korea, The role of the health personnel is to elicit, facilitate and maintain health promoting behavior with his and her assurance for health consumers being competent and supported in the voluntary choice of their health promoting activities. The health promoting activities such as the above mentioned will be produce escalation of their life Quality among Koreans.

Purpose : The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of image training and vibration on performance of vertical jumping. Methods : Subjects was classified into two groups, which were image training group(n=20) and vibration application group(n=20). The standard methods of each intervention were image training with listening recorded indication for 5 minute and vibration with speed of $1200{\pm}200\;rpm$. Muscle strength was measured using vertical jump performance. Results : The vertical jump performance was significantly increased after image training and vibration application(p<.05), however, it was more significantly after image training(p<.05). Conclusion : This study showed that image training and vibration application were effective treatment strategy on increase of muscle strength. Therefore, it could be considered as a treatment method in the patients with musculoskeletal disease including fracture, chronic degenerative disease and disuse atrophy.

Background: This study evaluated the early and long-term outcomes of surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) in elderly patients in the era of transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Methods: Between 2001 and 2018, 94 patients aged ${\geq}75years$ underwent isolated AVR with stented bioprosthetic valves for aortic valve stenosis (AS). The main etiologies of AS were degenerative (n=63) and bicuspid (n=21). The median follow-up duration was 40.7 months (range, 0.6-174 months). Results: Operative mortality occurred in 2 patients (2.1%) and paravalvular leak occurred in 1 patient. No patients required permanent pacemaker insertion after surgery. Late death occurred in 11 patients. The overall survival rates at 5 and 10 years were 87.2% and 65.1%, respectively. The rates of freedom from valve-related events at 5 and 10 years were 94.5% and 88.6%, respectively. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) score (p=0.013) and chronic kidney disease (p=0.030) were significant factors affecting long-term survival. The minimal p-value approach demonstrated that an STS score of 3.5% was the most suitable cut-off value for predicting long-term survival. Conclusion: Surgical AVR for elderly AS patients may be feasible in terms of early mortality and postoperative complications, particularly paravalvular leak and permanent pacemaker insertion. The STS score and chronic kidney disease were associated with long-term outcomes after AVR in the elderly.
Background: Chronic inflammation in the brain has known to be associated with the development of a various neurological diseases including dementia. In general, the characteristic of neuro-inflammation is the activated microglia over the brain where the pathogenesis occurs. Pro-inflammatory repertoires, interleukin-1${\beta}$ (IL-1${\beta}$) and nitric oxide (NO), are the main causes of neuro-degenerative disease, particularly in Alzheimer's disease (AD) which is caused by neuronal destruction. Those pro-inflammatory repertoires may lead the brain to chronic inflammatory status, and thus we hypothesized that chronic inflammation would be inhibited when pro-inflammatory repertoires are to be well controlled by inactivating the signal transduction associated with inflammation. Methods: In the present study, we examined whether biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB), an active compound from Schizandra chinensis Baillon, inhibits the NO production by a direct method using Griess reagent and by RT-PCR in the gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and IL-1${\beta}$. Western blots were also used for the analysis of NF-${\kappa}B$ and I${\kappa}B$. Results: In the study, we found that DDB effectively inhibited IL-1${\beta}$ as well as NO production in BV-2 microglial cell, and the translocation of NF-${\kappa}B$ was comparably inhibited in the presence of DDB comparing those to the positive control, lipopolysaccharide. Conclusion: The data suggested that the DDB from Schizandra chinensis Baillon may play an effective role in inhibiting the pro-inflammatory repertoires which may cause neurodegeneration and the results imply that the compound suppresses a cue signal of the microglial activation which can induce the brain pathogenesis such as Alzheimer's disease.
Idiopathic hypertrophic spinal pachymeningitis (IHSP) is a rare inflammatory disease characterized by hypertrophic inflammation of the dura mater and various clinical courses that are from myelopathy. Although many associated diseases have been suggested, the etiology of IHSP is not well understood. The ideal treatment is controversial. In the first case, a 55-year-old woman presented back pain, progressive paraparesis, both leg numbness, and voiding difficulty. Initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an anterior epidural mass lesion involving from C6 to mid-thoracic spine area with low signal intensity on T1 and T2 weighted images. We performed decompressive laminectomy and lesional biopsy. After operation, she was subsequently treated with steroid and could walk unaided. In the second case, a 45-year-old woman presented with fever and quadriplegia after a spine fusion operation due to lumbar spinal stenosis and degenerative herniated lumbar disc. Initial MRI showed anterior and posterior epidural mass lesion from foramen magnum to C4 level. She underwent decompressive laminectomy and durotomy followed by steroid therapy. However, her conditions deteriorated gradually and medical complications occurred. In our cases, etiology was not found despite through investigations. Initial MRI showed dural thickening with mixed signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images. Pathologic examination revealed chronic nonspecific inflammation in both patients. Although one patient developed several complications, the other showed slow improvement of neurological symptoms with decompressive surgery and steroid therapy. In case of chronic compressive myelopathy due to the dural hypertrophic change, decompressive surgery such as laminectomy or laminoplasty may be helpful as well as postoperative steroid therapy.
