In order to secure microbiological safety and quality of commercial vegetable sprouts, buckwheat seeds and sprouts were investigated for their microbiological flora and for the effect of chlorine treatment on quality. Microbiological analyses showed that major inherent bacteria including Enterobacter, Sphingomonas, and Klebsiella were found in commercial buckwheat sprouts with a population size ranging from $10^5$ to $10^7$ CFU/g. In addition, buckwheat seeds had a similar microbial flora to sprouts. Foodborne pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli O157:H7, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes were not detected in the sprout or in the seed samples. Chlorine treatment with 50-150 ppm sodium hypochlorite noticeably reduced viable bacteria cell counts of the sprouts by about 1 log. However, no significant difference was observed among the different chlorine concentrations. After storage for 7 days at $5^{\circ}C$, the sprouts treated with 100-150 ppm chlorine showed higher sensory scores in visual quality than the others (p<0.05). The results indicated that proper pretreatment, such as dipping in chlorinated water, could confer a beneficial effect on the microbiological safety and visual quality of buckwheat sprouts.

The vehicle wiper blade(W/B) to lower the friction coefficient of the rubber surface after the surface treatment with chlorine were investigated. IR spectrum from W/B was used to determine the extent of chlorination of the rubber surface. Coefficient of friction is significantly reduced by the treatment with chlorine. In particular, the more sensitive influence on the initial chlorination. Rubber surface properties with respect to the longitudinal direction of the cutting plane were obtained by EPMA line analysis results. Penetration depth by EPMA chlorine concentration($20.0{\ell}$ of water for 35.0% hydrochloric acid(HCl) $300m{\ell}$ with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl) $400m{\ell}$), the chlorine treatment for 5 minutes was conducted to find that after 1.2 ${\mu}m$.

This study was to examine the potential disinfection efficiencies of 10 compounds by determining their antimicrobial capacity and ichthyotoxicity. Antimicrobial effects against Vibrio sp., Edwadsiella tarda, Streptococcus sp., and Staphylococcus sp. were tested using 10 different disinfectants; hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, povidon iodine, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC), ortho-dichlorobenzen, and copper sulfate. Chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) containing 5% $ClO_2$ and copper sulfate had no effects on bactericidal activity, while the other disinfectants resulted in 99.99% bactericidal activity against 4 strains of fish pathogenic bacteria. The ichthyotoxicity of the 10 disinfectants was investigated using 3 kinds of fish species; flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), rockfish (Sebastes pachycephalus), and black sea bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii). Median lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) values of the 10 disinfectants were estimated to determine toxicity ranges of the doses within 24 hr. Among test disinfectant solutions, hydrogen peroxide showed the highest $LC_50$ in flounder (201.3), rockfish (269.7), and black sea bream (139.3 ppm). DDAC revealed the lowest $LC_{50}$ in flounder (2.1), rockfish (1.0), and black sea bream (1.5 ppm). These results suggest that DDAC, quaternary ammonium compounds, glutaraldehyde, and sodium hypochlorite are effective disinfectants for fish and bacterial species examined in this study.
Physicochemical properties of waxy maize starch and oxidized waxy maize starch with sodium hypochlorite $(0{\sim}60\;mg\;CL_2/g\;starch,40^{\circ}C,\;pH\;10,\;3.0\;hr)$ were studied. As sodium hypochlorite concentration was increased, the content of crude lipid and crude protein of the oxidized starch were decreased. And crude protein content and whiteness was considered to show negative regression. However, the crude ash content of the oxidized starch increased significantly with oxidation and bore a positive regression to the chlorine content. There was a progressive increase in the carboxyl content with increasing oxidant level. After pasting in hot water and cooling, viscosity of the oxidized starches were drastically lower than that of native starch . As carboxyl contents of the oxidized starch increased, the solubility and swelling power was increased. When waxy maize starch treated with 0, 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0% sodium hypochlorite, temperature of initial gelatinization of oxidized starch was shown to 65, 65, 60 and $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. The oxidized waxy maize starches also form clearer pastes. Water binding capacity of the oxidized starch decreased as the degree of carboxyl group substitution increased. Waxy maize starch has polygonal and some round granules which range from about 3.7 to $20\;{\mu}m$ in diameter. Surface appearance of the waxy maize starch became rough when oxidized with sodium hypochlorite. When homogenate of the oxidized waxy maize starch solution and corn germ oil was stored under room temperature for 24 hours, the emulsion stability was considered to depend on starch concentration and degree of substitution.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the physicochemical properties, cytotoxicity and penetration into dentinal tubules of ChlorCidTM Surf (3% sodium hypochlorite [NaOCl] with surfactant) in comparison to ChlorCidTM (3% NaOCl without surfactant). Materials and Methods: The physicochemical properties evaluated were pH, surface tension, free available chlorine (FAC) and contact angle. Cytotoxicity was evaluated in L929 fibroblasts exposed to the solutions by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide and neutral red assays. Assessment of penetration into dentinal tubules was performed by staining single-rooted permanent human teeth with crystal violet (n = 9), which were irrigated with the solutions and analyzed in cervical, middle and apical segments. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-test, 2-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's post-test or t-test (α = 0.05). Results: ChlorCidTM Surf and ChlorCidTM FAC values were close to those indicated by the manufacturer. ChlorCidTM Surf showed lower surface tension and contact angle on dentin, and higher pH than ChlorCidTM (p < 0.05). The penetration of ChlorCidTM Surf was higher in cervical and middle segments, compared with ChlorCidTM (p < 0.05). There was no difference in irrigant cytotoxicity (p > 0.05). Conclusions: ChlorCidTM Surf showed lower surface tension, lower contact angle on root canal dentin, higher penetration into dentinal tubules and more alkaline pH, compared with ChlorCidTM. However, both solutions showed similar cytotoxicity and FAC content.

The formation pattern of DBPs (disinfection by-products) in raw water treated with hypochlorite, chlorine disinfectant was studied. TOC (total organic carbon), residual chlorine, turbidity and 14 DBPs in raw water from Han-river and Nakdong river during 1 ~ 14 days were determined. Total DBPs in Han river was 101.3 ng/mL (789.6 nM) after 7days and THMs (trihalomethanes) are the dominant portion of 68%. HAAs (haloacetic acids) and chloral hydrate were determined 19% and 10% respectively. In Nakdong river total DBPs was 98.4 ng/mL (678.6 nM) and dominant class was HAAs. (55.8 ng/mL, 57%) THMs(34%) and N-compounds like HANs (haloacetonitriles, 5%) and chloropicrin were increased. It may be explained that high concentration of NH4-N in Nakdong river react with chlorine produced chloramine and this formed different pattern of DBPs. As a result, total DBPs formation pattern depends on raw water and disinfectant and in generally the initial concentration of acidic HAAs was high and THMs was increased gradually.

Blue jeans are finished with stonewashing process to give it optimal softness and color contrast of blue and white. So, Yellowing may well be generated during storage or use and thereby, their appearance may be damaged much. So, this study was aimed at finding the solutions to reduce the yellowing problem caused by residual metals after stonewshing. To this end, sample blue jeans were made to be finished with various methods of wet-treatment and then, be subject to daylight to check their photoyellowing. The results of this test can be summarized as follows; Since the stonewashing process was found to affect the yellowing, the residual metals of stone- washed blue jeans was analyzed. And it was found that it contained such residual metal as Al, Ca, Cu, Ti, Si, K and Zn. In particular, it was conceived that Al was a prime cause affecting the yellowing. Meanwhile, when the blue jeans were treated by the metal ionchelating agent of EDTA-2Na, the residual levels of Al and Ti were reduced by about 50%, while the photoyellolving was lowered by 75%, which is suggesed that EDTA is very effective in preventing the yellowing. On the other hand, when the blue jeans were bleached by the hypochlorite, chlorine remained in blue jean accelerated the yellowing. However, when this blue jean was treated again by the sodium thiosulfate for its dechloridization, the residual of chlorine was reduced, and the yellowing was lowered by about 43%.
A novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) reverse osmosis (RO)/non-woven fabric (NWF) membrane was prepared by adding zinc oxide (ZnO) nanospheres ($30{\pm}10nm$) during the interfacial polymerization process of m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on self-made polysulfone (PSF) membrane/polyester (PET) non-woven fabric support. The improved performance of TFN RO membrane was verified in terms of water contact angle (WCA), water flux, salt rejection, antifouling properties and chlorine resistance. The results showed that the WCA value of TFN RO surface had a continuous decrease with the increasing of ZnO content in MPD aqueous solution. The water flux of composite TFN RO membranes acquired a remarkable increase with a stable high solute rejection (94.5 %) in $1g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NaCl aqueous solution under the optimized addition amount of ZnO (1 wt%). The continuous testing of membrane separation performance after the immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution indicated that the introduction of ZnO nanospheres also dramatically enhanced the antifouling properties and the chlorine resistance of composite RO membranes.

The treatment of combined sewer overflow (CSO) is one of potential concerns in domestic wastewater treatment in Korea due to the pre-announce of CSO regulations. This work investigated the effects of disinfectant (NaOCl) concentration (0.11 to 4.0 mg $Cl_2/L$), pH (6.5 to 8.0), temperature (15 to $25^{\circ}C$), ammonia (10 to 41 mg N/L), and suspended solids (91 to 271 mg SS/L) on the chlorine disinfection of CSO. The effect of NaOCl concentration on the pseudo-$1^{st}$ order reaction rate for total coliform inactivation was described well with a saturation-type model with the half-velocity constant of 1.212 mg/L. The total coliform inactivation reaction rate decreased with SS and pH, and increased with temperature. Ammonia in the examined range did not affect the disinfection kinetics. A chlorine contact tank with the injection chlorine level of 1 mg $Cl_2/L$ and the hydraulic retention time of 1.25 min is estimated to reduce total coliform from $1{\times}10^5MPN/mL$ to 1,000 MPN/mL at 271 mg SS/L, $15^{\circ}C$, and pH 8.0. Chlorine would be a proper option for the disinfection of CSO.
Transgenic tobacco plants expressing calmodulin derivative($lys{\rightarrow}ile$ 115 calmodulin) and hygromycin resistance genes or hygromycin resistance gene alone(control) were generated by Agrobacterium-mediated DNA transfer. Seeds obtained from the transgenic plants($F_o$) were tested for resistance to hygromycin and the expected 3 : 1 ratio was observed. The expression of calmodulin derivative in the tobacco plants was identified by a combined method of Western blot and Chemiluminescence. The effects of surface sterilizers on the germiation of seeds from transgenic tobacco plants were tested in Murashige and Skoog agar medium. Seeds obtained from transgenic tobacoo plants expressing the calmodulin derivative showed no fungi contamination with normal germination by treating with sterilized water alone or sodium hypochlorite(2% effective chlorine). In contrast, seeds from the control transgenic tobacco plants showed severe contamination with fungi by treating with sterilized water alone and showed no contamination with normal germination by treating with sodium hypochlorite(2% chlorine). The effects of calcium concentration on the germination of seeds from transgenic tobacco plants were tested in Murashige and Skoog agar medium. Seeds obtained from transgenic tobacco plants expressing the calmodulin derivative showed better germination frequency than that of the control transgenic tobacco seeds in the medium containing 30 mM $CaCl_2$. The data raise the possibility that the expression of calmodulin derivative gene in tobacco plants could increase adaptability of the seeds to environmental stresses.
