  • A new method for separation and quantitative determination of isoflavone glucosides in rhizomes of Belamcanda chinensis (Iridaceae) by high performance liquid chromatography was elaborated. A reverse-phase system with a Spheri-5 RP-18 column using MeOH:HOAc:$H_2O$(24 : 5 : 71) as a mobile phase was developed. The isoflavonoids were detected at 268 nm and the analysis was successfully carried out within 15 min.

  • The methanolic extract of the twigs of Celtis chinensis was found to show inhibitory activity on acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme that plays a role in the metabolic hydrolysis of ACh. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanolic extract resulted in the isolation of N-p-coumaroyl tyramine. as an inhibitor on AChE. This compound inhibited AChE activity in a dose-dependent manner, and the $IC_50$ value of trans-N-p-coumaroyl tyramine was 34.5 $\mu$g/mL (122 $\mu$M).

  • Saururus Chinensis Baill (Saururaceae) has been used as folk medicine for analgesics, beriberi, edema, hepatitis, and icterus, etc. Hepatoprotective effects of Saururus chinensis Baill (SCB) administration on function of the biochemical parameters in liver of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) treated rats were investigated. After 7 days from TCDD(1$\mu\textrm{g}$/kg) injection, SCB(200mg/kg) was administered into rats intraperitoneally for 4 week.s We examined the antioxidative enzymatic activity by measuring the level of AST and ALT in serum and SOD, Catalase, GPx, GSH and GSSG in liver tissue of rats. • From the aerial parts of Saururus chinensis growing in Korea, four flavonoids (hyperin, isoquercitrin, quercitrin and rutin) were isolated and identified by high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and thin layer chromatography. However, avicularin, which was known as one of the main constituents of flavonoid, was not detected.

  • Schisandra chinensis Baill. (Shisandraceae) is used commonly in traditional Korean herbal medicine. One new dibenzocyclooctene lignan compound, benzoylgomisin Q, was found, for the first time, in the fruits of Schisandra chinensis Baill., together with five known lignan compounds; schisandrin, gomisin A, gomisin G, deoxyschisandrin, and gomisin N, using an ESI-positive MS-preparative HPLC auto-purification system. The structures of these compounds were determined via UV, MS, and NMR spectral studies.

  • The small shrimp of the genus Acetes which is abundantly distributed in shallow waters along the western coast of Korea has long been considered as Acetes japonicus Kishinouye. In the other hand Liu(1956) has suggested that A. chinensis was possibly distributed in Korean waters, judging from the information from Yoshida(1941), but none of the specimen was collected from this area. After careful examination of the specimens of Acetes collected from the station (37$^{\circ}$39'N, 126$^{\circ}$23'E) in Sokmo channel, central part of Korea authors agreed that the population distributed in this area is consists of Acetes chinensis Hansen. In the present paper the diagnosis of Korean species of Acetes chinensis has first described with taxonomic revision and it is the new record for Korean waters.

  • Applications of probiotics to shrimp ponds were carried out to determine their effects on water quality. Fermented solutions consisting of Bacillus spp. and Nitrosomonas spp. were applied to a 4 ha shrimp (Fenneropenaeus chinensis) pond from July to September, 2000. In the pond treated with probiotics, daily variations of DO and pH, and concentrations of DIN and DIP were lower than those in the ponds without probiotic treatment. Concentration of phytoplankton was less variable and the number of species was more variable in the probiotic-treated pond than those in the control pond. Variation of bacterial numbers and the number of Vibrio spp. were lower in the treated pond than those in the control pond. It is confirmed that the probiotics can be used to improve water quality of the shrimp ponds.

  • This studies were carried out to investgate the effects of omija (Schizandra chinensis) extracts(OE) on the growth of lactic acid bacteria (LAB, HYO-1 and HYO-2) isolated from home-made kimchi. The growth of isolated LAB was inhibited apparently in modified MRS broth containing 1% or 2% of OE. The growth of isolated LAB was inhibited by pH control with HCI to 4.3 or 3.7, the same pH of modified MRS broth containing 1% or 2% of OE. The strong growth inhibitory properties against isolated LAB were shown by fumaric and itaconic acid among various organic acids of Schizandra chinensis, such as citric acid, malic acid, lactic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid and acetic acid. The isolated LAB were indentified as Lactobacillus plantarum.

  • Caminus jejuensis n. sp was collected from depth of 20 m at Geomeunyeo, Seogwipo, Jejudo Island by a SCUBA diving from April 2004 to December 2008. This new species is similar to C. chinensis from China in the composition of spicules except for the spherasters and they differ in spicule size and growth form. This species has longer orthotriaenes and spherules, smaller sterrasters and oxyasters than those of C. chinensis. This species also has many spherasters in choanosome, but C. chinensis lacks. Morever, the new species is a massive shape with wrinkles, whereas C. chinensis is a club shape with smooth surface. Description and figures of the new species are provided.

  • This study was carried out to establish the quantitative analysis of lignans for the quality evaluation of fruit from Schizandra chinensis. Five lignans, gomisin N, schizandrin, gomisin C, schisantherin C, and gomisin A were isolated from the fruits of S. chinensis and identified by the spectroscopic methods. Quantitative determination of three lignans, schizandrin, gomisin A, gomisin N, was conducted using HPLC. Average contents of three lignans in collected lines were 0.70% of schizandrin, 0.20% of gomisin A, 0.57% of gomisin N, and 1.47% of total lignans.
