This study is the short investigation on various interior color systems of children's museums in Korea. In case of Children's Museum in National Museum of Korea, each exhibition area is apparently divided by adopting colors in accord with the subject of each space. Middle color in that museum generally gives stability, and clear color and accent color give better perception and vitality Children's folk Museum has adopted Korean traditional colors, O-Bang Colors, which have indicated Korean tradition for ages. • The purpose of this study is to seek a planning approach for children's museum within Korean context that promotes community participation. A literature review method and a field survey method were used. Literature reviews on community participation paradigm, residents' participation and donation networks in community regeneration processes, and finally on case studies on children's museum in Korea were carried out. Through the field survey on Chicago Children's Museum(CCM) located in downtown Chicago, its role was identified as networking systems of community participation and donation and was verified as a socio-physical base for vitalizing donation culture that is an active and a leading community participation method. As a result, CCM has engaged many partnerships with city organizations and local schools to provide diverse and unique programs that are not only targeted to children but also parents, teachers and visitors. Also, an evolution of CCM through various types of donations and community participation was delineated. CCM was found successfully in restoring community spirit and vitalizing economical growth where it once was a decayed city area. Rather than focusing on descriptive technique of typical children's museum, this study explored how community fabric is made and acted out, through rethinking community participation's value, and how it can influence a physical space. CCM, as a good example of community participatory museum, the results can be used as a reference in planning and directing community participation based children's museums in Korea. It is significant to shed light on children's museum as an opportunity of social space which can empower community.

  • With the exhibition materials and exhibition spaces are provided, it is the reaction of the visitors that completes the function of science museum. To satisfy the visitors, it is necessary to understand their needs, interests, and motives, apart from the physical environment of the museum. The purpose of this research is to verify the effect of children's personal characteristics on the satisfaction in science museum. In doing so, an interview survey was conducted: 210 primary and middle school students who had finished the exhibition tour were randomly selected and interviewed. The data was analysed by a T-test and an one-way ANOVA to find out the correlation. The results of analysis are as follows: First, a meaningful statistical differences are found by the age groups in terms of motivation, expectation, satisfaction, enjoyment, and total staying time at the museum. The lower the grade, students are satisfied with their everyday living; and this is reflected on their intrinsic motivations and higher expectations on visit. Also, their actual satisfaction and enjoyment are higher and they stay at the museum longer than the other group. Second, the group with intrinsic motivation and higher expectation is more satisfied with the contents of the exhibition than the group with extrinsic motivation. Third, the level of higher education of mothers, rather than that of fathers had mere effect on the learning of the children at the museum. Also, the children who are brought up by full-time house wives have bigger achievement of learning from the exhibition than those with working mothers.

  • This research is based on the environmental psychology model of Albert Mehrabian & JAMES a. Russell. The purpose of this research is to search a method of planning a spatial image improving the degree of access that is audience's dependent response to a display space image of a museum for children. A museum for children is the place for education with experience and its main audience is children and parents. It indicates with a basis of the environmental psychology model that a designer needs to consider the emotional response of children and parents in designing the space. The space design starts from a plan of space image that is delivered to audience through the five senses. Image on the space means visual image as people acquire information mostly through the sense of sight. Visual image consists of shape, the feel of a material, and color that is the most influential factor to the sensibility of audience. Therefore, firstly, this research measures the degree of audience's approach and avoidence on image of display space. In addition, this research suggests the improvement method by analyzing differences on the access of each space and audience based on visual image. Secondly, four factors are extracted through factor analysis based on the result of adjective survey result.
