To examine relationships between learning-related social skills(LRSS) and literacy development a sample of 167 children aged 5-6 years were selected from 3 preschools in Seoul. Instruments for measuring LRSS were the cooperation, assertion, and self-control scales of the Social Skills Rating System (Gresham & Elliott, 1990) and the mastery behaviors scales of the Child Behavior Rating Scale (Bronson, et al. 1990). Literacy development was measured by the Concepts about Print(Woon, 1999), the Learning Readiness Scale(Korean Educational Development Institution 1998), and the Writing Development Scale(Lee, 1997). Teachers rated children's LRSS. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test, bivariate correlation, and regression analysis. LRSS correlated with children's literacy development. Mastery behaviors were the best predictor of literacy development.
The purpose of the present study was to examine age differences in children's recall for information about aggression, prosociability, and social withdrawal of others and to investigate the impact of likeability on children's recall for social behavioral information. The subjects were 160 children, 20 boys and 20 girls each at 6, 8, 10, and 12 years of age. The subjects listened to descriptions of the social behavior of a hypothetical boy and girl and subsequently reported their recollections. These descriptions were drawn from Bukowski's(1990) stydy, the Pupil Evaluation Inventory, and the Pittsburgh Adjustment Scales. The data were analyzed with 2-way ANOVA, paired T-test, and correlation. Differences across the age levels were found in the number of behaviors correctly recalled for the behavioral descriptions of aggression, prosociability, and social withdrawal. Descriptions of aggressive behavior was recalled more when children listened to a hypothetical boy than to a hypothetical girl. Additional analyses revealed that at 6 years of age, children recalled more descriptions of aggressive and prosocial behavior than of withdrawal and at 10 and 12 years of age, children recalled more descriptions of withdrawal behavior than of aggressive and prosocial behaviors. The more negative the children's affective evaluations of the withdrawal behavior, the better they recalled the withdrawal behavior.
This study examined mothers′ confidence in parenting practices for dealing with children′s emotional and behavioral problems, as well as the relationships between different confident parenting practices and their application to children′s behavioral problems. A total of 337 mothers of 4- and 5-year-old children responded to the Mother′s Questionnaire of Children′s Behaviors, with the following study results. First, the mothers showed high confidence in applying their own parenting practices to their children′s behavioral problems without outside help. Second, the parenting practice of "asking for help from family members" was related to children′s withdrawn behaviors, anxious behaviors, aggressive behaviors, social relationship problems, moral problems, and rule and courtesy problems.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a chorus program in a local child center regarding character, social skills, problematic behaviors, and ADHD. Subjects of this study included 24 children in elementary schools participating in the daytime programs at a local child center located in Suwon, South Korea. The chorus program was comprised of 12 sessions of 60 minutes each, conducted from April 5-July 5, 2017. Results of this study were as follows: First, during the interviews on the character of the children before and after participation in the chorus program, it was noted that the children became more active in terms of the relationships with others and leadership. However, it was also noted that children were more active at the center than they were at their schools. Second, the differences in social skills before and after the chorus program among children were significant in overall social skills and their sub-variables, indicating that there were effective in adjusting social skills. Third, the differences in problematic behaviors before and after participation in the chorus program were significant only in overall problematic behaviors and excessive behavior. This indicates that the program was effective in improving problematic behaviors, particularly for excessive behavior. Fourth, the differences before and after participation in the chorus program in terms of ADHD were statistically significant for ADHD and its sub-variables of carelessness and hyperactivity impulsiveness. This indicates that there was an overall improvement in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Therefore, the findings in this study showed that the chorus program was effective on enhancing character, social skills, problematic behaviors, and ADHD behaviors.
Subjects were 134 institutionalized children(86 boys, 48 girls) and 218 non-institutionalized children(115 boys, 103 girls). Findings were that (1) institutionalized children showed lower internal locus of control than non-institutionalized children. (2) Institutionalized children with internal locus of control showed active coping behavior. Non-institutionalized children with internal locus of control showed active and social support seeking coping behavior, and non-institutional children with external locus of control showed aggressive coping behavior. (3) Regression analysis models showed that institutionalized girls were more depressed than boys; depressed institutionalized children were oriented to external locus of control and passive coping behavior. Depressed non-institutionalized children were oriented to external locus of control and passive, evasive coping behavior and showed lower active and social support seeking behavior.
The Purpose of this study was to examine how children's perceptuions of parental childrearing behaviors and family support were related to their interpersonal problem-solving behaviors. 580 subjects of the 5th 6th grades filled out questionnaires concerning the three research variables. The data were analyzed through correlation analyses and regression analyses. The results were as follows: The significant correlations were found between parental warmth·acceptance and children's interpersonal problem-solving behavior and between family support and problem-solving behaviors. Problem-solving behaviors showed higher correlations with maternal warmths·acceptance than paternal behaviors and with opposite-sex parents behaviors than with same-sex parents behaviors. Family support predicted children's social problem-solving behaviors better than parental warmth·acceptance especially among boys.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between children's perceptions of interpersonal relations (parents, family, and peers) and those of self, and to examine how the perceptions are related ot problem-solving and social preference. The subjects of this study were 625 children of 5th and 6th grade in 4 primary schools in Taejon City. Results showed positive correlations among four measures of social perceptions (to parents, to family, to peer, and to self). Therefore we have found generalization among children's representations across four interpersonal domains-that is, parents, family, self, and peer. Children's problem solving-behaviors were most significantly related with parents/family domains among interpersonal relationships. In the case of boys, direct path between the perceptions of parents/family and problem solving-behavior was significant, whereas girls' perception of parent/family was associated with problem solving-behavior both directly and indirectly, through girls' perceptions of self and peer. Social preference was highly correlated with perceptions of peer and of father. This study has found that both boys' and girls' peer representations were established for the role as mediators between parents/family representations and peer ratings of social preference. These findings revealed that the impact of family representations on peer rejection was mediated by children's beliefs about their peers.
This study investigated the relations among maternal cognition, maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors, and their children's peer competence. The participants were 40 kindergarten children and their mothers. The mothers completed a questionnaire concerning maternal beliefs about children's social skills. Also their supervisory/monitoring behaviors were observed in the context of child-peer interactions. Children's peer competence was measured using a sociometric status measure and a peer acceptance rating scale. Maternal beliefs were related both to the quantity/quality of maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors and to children's peer competence. Maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors were also related to children's actual peer competence.
Subjects were 15 teachers and 143 children at 15 child-care centers in Seoul that varied by quality of care. The Child Care Program Observation Scale(Rhee et at., 2003) was employed to observe the quality of the centers. Information on teachers' participation in play was collected by 20 units of observation for each teacher using a rating scale developed by the author. Children's behaviors were observed with time sampling method in 12 categories of play behaviors based on Social and Cognitive Play Scales(Rubin et al., 1978). Children's play behaviors varied by quality of child-care centers and teachers' participation in play. When child-care quality was high, teachers' participated actively in children's play and children showed developmentally appropriate play behaviors.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions and causes of the problem behaviors of Korean Chinese'left-behind'children in China in order to propose a support system to prevent problem behaviors of them. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 399 children who attend at three Korean Chines schools in Yonbian in China. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, internalizing problem behavior, social support, self-esteem, and self-resilience. This paper analysed the survey data by employing one-way ANOVA and a structural equation modeling. It verified if there is significant difference in internalizing problem behaviour, self-esteem, self-resilience, and social support between left-behind children's group and non left-behind children's group. It also identified a structural causal relationship and direct or indirect effects among problematic behaviour, self-esteem, self-resilience, and social support. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, there was a statistically significant difference in the social withdrawal and depression of internalizing problem behaviors between left-behind children's group and non left-behind children's group. Second, the left-behind children's group showed no significant difference in self-resilience and social support compared to non left-behind children's group, but showed a significant difference in self-esteem. In the positive self- esteem factor, non left-behind children's group showed much higher score whereas left-behind children's group was higher in the negative self-esteem factor. Third, social support for left-behind children's group has a statistically significant direct negative effect on internalizing problem behaviors, and indirectly negative effects on problem behavior through self-resilience. These results suggest the necessity of establishing a social support system for mitigating and preventing problem behaviors and the necessity of preparing measures to improve self-resilience. Based on the results of the study, we discussed how to establish a social support system in China to mitigate internalizing problem behaviors of Korean Chinese left-behind children.
