  • A novel index representing burden distribution form in the blast furnace is developed and index estimation model is built with an empirical modeling method to monitor inner condition of the furnace without expensive sensors. To find the best combination of index and modeling method, two candidates for the index and four modeling methods have been examined. Results have shown that 3-D index have more resolution in describing the distribution form than 1-D index and ANN model produces smallest RMSE due to nonlinearity between the indices and charging mode. Although ANN has shown the best prediction accuracy in this study, PLS can be a good alternative due to its advantages in generalization capability, consistency, simplicity and training time. The second best result of PLS in the prediction results supports this fact.

  • Catalase (CAT) decomposes hydrogen peroxide that is toxic to the body. In this study, simple and sensitive detector has been developed for observing catalase activity using liquid crystal droplet system. Microscale LC droplet patterns are formed by spreading aldehyde-doped nematic liquid crystal on pre-treated glass slides. When hydrogen peroxide is added, aldehyde is oxidized and amphiphiles are formed. Dodecanoates cause the pattern to transit from bright to dark as they self-assemble to form a carboxyalte monolayer at the interface. When a drop of pre-incubated CAT and hydrogen peroxide mixture is placed onto the pattern, bright fan-shape is observed. This planar optical appearance indicates that catalase has decomposed hydrogen peroxide. Compared to the detectors that have been previously developed, this system is more sensitive with detection limit of 1fM. This research suggests further studies to be on LC droplet patterning to develop highly sensitive and methodologically simple sensors for various chemicals.

  • Stabilized Cross-linking Enzyme Crystals(CLEC) can be used as not only biocatalysts but also as enzyme sensors. PMS(Phenylmethyl Sulfate)was shown more efficience than any other electron mediator transfers toward HLADH(Horse Liver Alcohol Dehydrogenase)that were examined. NQS(naphtoquinonesulphonate), phenothiazine and ferrocene aldehyde had respectively just 52%, 37%, 35% electron transfer efficiency as compared to PMS . HLADH-CLEC was very stable toward elctron transfer mediators such as PMS, NQS and ferrocene aldehyde in which HLADH-solution was unstable.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) films grown on a carbonized Si(100) substrate, using hexamethyldisilane (HMDS, $Si_2(CH_3)_6$) as a safe organosilane single precursor in a nonflammable $H_2$/Ar ($H_2$ in Ar) mixture carrier gas by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) at $1280^{\circ}C$. The growth process was performed under various conditions to determine the optimized growth and carbonization condition. Under the optimized condition, grown film has a single crystalline 3C-SiC with well crystallinity, small voids, low residual stress, low carrier concentration, and low RMS. Therefore, the 3C-SiC film on the carbonized Si (100) substrate is suitable to power device and MEMS fields.

  • NiO thin films are very attractive for use as an antiferromagnetic layer, p-type transparent conducting films, in electrochromic devices and functional sensor layer for chemical sensors, due to their excellent chemical stability, as well as optical, electrical and magnetic properties. In addition, (100)- and (111)-oriented NiO films can be used as buffer layers on which to deposit other oriented oxide films, such as c-axis-oriented perovskite-type ferromagnetic films and superconducting films, because of the similarity in symmetry of oxygen ion lattice and lattice constants between the NiO films and the oriented oxide films. Thus, controlling the crystallographic orientation and surface roughness of the NiO films for a buffer layer are very important.

  • The performances of tetracycline based cation selective polymeric membrane electrodes of many sets with different plasticizers were investigated as the selectivity of ion-selective electrodes and optodes are greatly influenced by membrane solvent and also controlled by plasticizers. The membrane 1 with Bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS) and additive shows good potentiometric performance toward Ca2+ (slope: 27.8 mV per decade; DL: -4.52) including selectivity. Contrastingly, membrane 4 with Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) shows near-Nernstian response, it has also shown the best measuring range and detection limit for Ca2+ (29.5 mV and -5.10) and Mg2+ (24.4 mV and -5.04) and the least selectivity has been also observed between Ca2+ and Mg2+. When the membrane 1 and 4 were used together to flow system, we could determine the concentration of Ca2+ and Mg2+, simultaneously.

  • In this study, real-time and label-free methods for monitoring the enzymatic reaction of urease, which releases ammonia through the hydrolysis of urea in an aqueous solution, were developed using a liquid crystal (LC)-based pH sensor. Nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB), doped with 4'-pentyl-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (PBA), exhibited a shift in optical appearance from bright to dark when it was in contact with ammonia generated from the enzymatic reaction between urease and urea. This optical change was attributed to the anchoring transitions of LCs caused by hydrophobic interactions between the tails of deprotonted PBA ($PBA^-$) molecules and the LCs at the aqueous/LC interface. This novel technique holds great promise for the sensitive detection of urease along with its substrates and inhibitors.

  • Pentiptycene and its derivatives having cavity, ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking prohibition, and AIEE functionalities were synthesized. 6,7-Dibromo-1,4-dihydropentiptycene-1,4-epoxide was obtained from the reaction of 6,7-dibromo-1,4-dihydronaphthalene-1,4-epoxide and anthracene. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Prepared pentiptycene derivatives could be useful precursor for organofluorene compounds which could be an excellent candidate for electronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLED's) and chemical sensor.

  • A simple and rapid method is described for detecting nitroaromatic explosives in air or seawater with the use of photoluminescent organosilicon compounds. The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and fluorescence quenching efficiency of silafluorenes are reported. Silafluorenes were synthesized from the reduction of dilithiobiphenyl with dichlorosilanes. Two silafluorenes were used for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds. Detection of nitroaromatic molecules, such as 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), and picric acid (PA), has been explored. A linear Stern-Volmer relationship was observed for the first three analytes. Fluorescence spectra of silafluorenes obtained in either toluene solutions or thin films displayed no shift in the maximum of the emission wavelength. The photoluminescence quenching occurs by a static mechanism.

  • New types of conducting polyaniline-polymannuronate (PANI-PM) composites were synthesized by in situ deposition techniques in an aqueous media. By dissolving different weight percentage of polymannuronate (PM) (5, 10, 15, and 25%), the oxidative polymerization of aniline was carried out using ammonium per sulfate as an oxidant. The obtained composites were studied for their thermal stability and electrochemical behavior. The thermal stability of PANI-PM composites is lower than PANI, which supports a strong interaction between PANI and PM. However, the composites show an appreciable electrochemical behavior. Based on these observation the PANI-PM composites can be explored in different fields such as electric devices, sensors, functional coatings, etc.
