  • The low-altitude PAC-2 Patriot missile system is the backbone of ROK air defense for intercepting enemy aircraft. Currently there is no missile interceptor which can defend against the relatively high velocity ballistic missile from North Korea which may carry nuclear, biological or chemical warheads. For ballistic missile defense, Korea's air defense systems are being evaluated. In attempting to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitude the most effective means is through a multi-layered missile defense system. The missile defense problem has been studied considering a single interception system or any additional capability. In this study, we seek to establish a mathematical model that's available for multi-layered missile defense and minimize total interception fail probability and proposes a solution based on genetic algorithms. We perform computational tests to evaluate the relative speed and solution of our GA algorithm in comparison with the commercial optimization tool GAMS.

  • The hydrolysis reaction of sarin(GB), one of the nerve agents was studied in aqueous sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solutions to find the experimental conditions which can convert GB into the less toxic compounds. 10 wt% of GB was added into the aqueous NaOH(2.05 eq) in a small-scale jacket-attached reactor connected to a circulator. The reaction rate constants were measured at three temperatures(50, 70 and $90^{\circ}C$) and the reaction times required to degrade the material to > 99% were calculated at different temperatures. In this study, 10 wt% of GB was degraded to 99.99% in 1.2hr at $90^{\circ}C$ by the aqueous NaOH solution. The major hydrolysate of GB was isopropyl methylphosphonate.

  • In this study, an ultraviolet Raman spectrometer was designed and fabricated to detect chemical contamination on the ground. The region of the Raman spectrum that indicated the characteristics of the chemicals was $350-3800cm^{-1}$. To fabricate a Raman spectrometer operating in this range, the layout and angle of optical components of the spectrometer were designed using a grating equation. Experimental devices were configured to measure the Raman spectra of chemicals based on the fabricated Raman spectrometer. The wavenumber of the spectrometer was calibrated by measuring the Raman spectrum of polytetrafluoroethylene, $O_2$, and $N_2$. The spectral range of the spectrometer was measured to be 23.46 nm ($3442cm^{-1}$) with a resolution of 0.195 nm ($30.3cm^{-1}$) at 253.65 nm. After calibration, the main Raman peaks of cyclohexane, methanol, and acetonitrile were found to be similar to the references within a relative error of 0.55%.

  • The expiration date of high energetic materials(HEM), such as HMX, RDX, TNT, is important. If the expiration date is violated, the expected specification of HEM would not be satisfied which may cause a different conclusion in an urgent situation. As a result, this HEM should maintain fresh conditions which cause the accumulation of waste HEM. If HEM is landfilled during demilitarization, the impact on living organizations is serious. Additionally, landfilling HEM has a possibility of explosion. In this research, the process flow diagram of the demilitarization gas treatment process was simulated while satisfying the law of the environment in Korea. After validation of simulation, it was optimized thermodynamically using Heat Exchanger Network Synthesis(HENs). This study is expected to enhance the energy efficiency of the original facility by suggesting developed designs. This research was supported by Agency of Defense Development NE32 Korea. • A wide range of possible hazards existing in thermal batteries are mainly caused by thermal runaway, which results in overheating or explosion in extreme case. Battery separators ensure the separation between two electrodes and the retention of ion-conductive electrolytes. Thermal runaways in thermal batteries can be significantly reduced by the adoption of these separators. The high operating temperature and the violent reactivity in thermal batteries, however, have limited the introduction of conventional separators. As a substitute for separators, MgO powders have been mostly used as a binder to hold molten salt electrolyte. During recent decades the fabrication technology of ceramic fiber, which has excellent mechanical strength and chemical stability, has undergone significant improvement. In this study we adopted wet-laid nonwoven paper making method instead of the electrospinning method which is costly and troublesome to produce in volume. Polymeric precursor can readily be coated on the surface of wet-laid ceramic paper, and be formed into ceramic film after heat treatment. The mechanical strength and the thermo-chemical stability as well as the wetting behaviors of ceramic separators with various molten salts were investigated to be applicable to thermal batteries. Due to their excellent chemical, mechanical, and electrical properties, wet-laid nonwoven separators made from ceramic fibers have revealed positive possibility as new separators for thermal batteries which operate at high temperature with no conspicuous sign of a short circuit and corrosion.

  • In the present paper, a variety of fiber reinforcements, for instance, stabilized OXI-PAN fibers, quasi-carbon fibers, commercial carbon fibers, and their woven fabric forms, have been utilized to fabricate pseudo-unidirectional (pseudo-UD) and 2-directional (2D) phenolic matrix composites using a compression molding method. Prior to fabricating quasi-carbon fiber/phenolic (QC/P) composites, stabilized OXI-PAN fibers and fabrics were heat-treated under low temperature carbonization processes to prepare quasi-carbon fibers and fabrics. The thermal conductivity and thermal expansion/contraction behavior of QC/P composites have been investigated and compared with those of carbon fiber/phenolic (C/P) and stabilized fiber/phenolic composites. Also, the chemical compositions of the fibers used have been characterized. The results suggest that use of proper quasi-carbonization process may control effectively not only the chemical compositions of resulting quasi-carbon fibers but also the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior of quasi-carbon fibers/phenolic composites in the intermediate range between stabilized PAN fiber- and carbon fiber-reinforced phenolic composites.

  • Purpose - After the transition, the development of defense industry in Eastern Europe has been regressed. Recently, they have internationally recognized that new products have been exported and contributed to the Innovation-Based Manufacturing of national economy such as unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, water purification technology, and mobile chemical laboratory, etc. The military forces in Eastern Europe are re-armed by the localization of self-produced munitions in their own defense industry, and then emphasize fostering their own defense industry. Thus, if they make a collaboration with other nations as a industrial cluster, it will gain a competitive edge on the defense industry. Research design, data, and methodology - The study was designed with the data of each national defense department. The research of the subject was reviewed before and after the transition. Thousands of workers have worked in defense industries before the transition, however, the defense industry and experts left after the transition. The Hungarian defense spending on GDP also dropped sharply from 1.72% in 2000 to 0.85% in 2013. But, due to the crisis in Ukraine and the crisis of Syrian refugees, the Viségrad Group (V4) member countries have also increased their interest in a defense and industries as well as the confidence in the EU and NATO. Results - On the whole, the joint of military training and purchase of defense materials were found in order to form the EU cooperative combat troops in CEE. There are the implementation of a joint manual plan for strengthening V4 security policy and the joint military exercises for V4 every year, and the others are electronic warfare and innovation of V4 national forces. Through such a performance analysis methodology, we found that the defense industry is developed through the national cluster cooperation among CEEs and spreading global distribution. Conclusions - Eastern Europe and Balkan countries have been looking forward to cooperating with the non-EU countries such as Korea and other defense industries. There are a lot of potential development into a new civilian cooperation defense industry for global-distribution. Thus, Korea should develop electronic commercial applications, not just as a weapon exporting region.

  • We fabricated several composite membranes with selectively permeable performance designed to facilitate water vapor transport and resist DMMP vapor permeation. Materials for selective permeable membrane were based on polyvinyl alcohol and functional polymer containing basic functional group. With these materials, we characterized selectively permeable performance to identify next-generation material with chemical-biological protective capability. Results showed that polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) materials possessed performance with superior water vapor permeation ($2,200{\sim}2,900g/m^2/day$) and protective capability against DMMP vapor ($47g/m^2/day$).
