  • Stone cultural heritages in Korea have a severe damages from chemical and biological weathering because most of them have been situated in outdoors without any suitable protection systems, and this in turn causes deformation and structural damage. To counteract these problems and increase durability, various kinds of conservation materials are used in the conservation and restoration treatments. However until now there are not many practical and technological experiments on this subject. This paper attempts quantitative evaluation of effectiveness about chemical of ethylsilicate based resin for sandstone in Yeongyang-gun. It takes a long time to evaluate durability and side effect after conservation materials treatment. So we use artificial weathering through freezing§ thawing experimental method. As a result of this experiment, porosity and absorptance increased, and elastic wave speed, elastic modules, unconfined compression strength and tensile strength decreased more than before. This study plans to make a scientific method study about weathering factor and mechanism, and to deduce correlation between artificial weathering and natural weathering.

  • High value-added aromatic aldehydes (e.g. vanillin and syringaldehyde) were produced from heavy fraction of bio-oil (HFBO) via catalytic oxidation. The concept is based on the use of metalloporphyin as catalyst and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) as oxidant under alkaline condition. The biomimetic catalyst cobalt(II)-sulfonated tetraphenylporphyrin ($Co(TPPS_4)$) was prepared and characterized. It exhibited relative high activity in the catalytic oxidation of HFBO. 4.57 wt % vanillin and 1.58 wt % syringaldehyde were obtained from catalytic oxidation of HFBO, compared to 2.6 wt % vanillin and 0.86 wt % syringaldehyde without $Co(TPPS_4)$. Moreover, a possible mechanism of HFBO oxidation using $Co(TPPS_4)/H_2O_2$ was proposed by the research of model compounds. The results showed that this is a promising and environmentally friendly method for production of aromatic aldehydes from HFBO under $Co(TPPS_4)/H_2O_2$ system.

  • The azeotrope of methyl acetate methanol and water was isolated using extractive distillation with water as entrainer. The pressure-swing extractive distillation (PSED) process and vapor side-stream distillation column (VSDC) with the rectifier process were designed to separate the methyl acetate, methanol and water mixture. It was revealed that the VSDC with the rectifier process had a reduction in energy consumption than the PSED process. Four control schemes of the two process were investigated: Double temperature control scheme (CS1), $Q_R/F$ feedforward control of reboiler duty scheme for PESD (CS2), $Q_R/F$ feedback control scheme for VSDC (CS3), the feedback control scheme of sensitive plate temperature of side-drawing distillation column to dominate the compressor shaft speed (CS4). Feed flow and composition disturbance were used to evaluate the dynamic performance. As a result, CS4 is a preferable choice for separation of methyl acetate-methanol-water mixture. A control scheme combining the operating parameters of dynamic equipment with the control indicators of static equipment was proposed in this paper. It means using the sensitive plate temperature of side-drawing column to control the compressor shaft speed. This is a new control scheme for extractive distillation.

  • From Neungsalli Temple located in Buyeo, ancient glass vessel fragments were discovered along with hundreds of glass beads. In this research, we used SEM-EDS to analyze glass vessel fragments and beads excavated from Neungsalli Temple. Then, we analyzed their chemical composition and examined their characteristics. In particular, we investigated a relationship between glass vessels from Neungsalli temple and Hwangnamdaechong (South tomb). The result of our experiment showed that the glass artifacts from Neungsalli temple were all soda glass. To be specific, the vessel fragments were soda-lime glass and spherical beads were high-alumina soda glass. Then, we compared glass vessel fragments from Neungsalli temple to glass vessels excavated from Hwangnamdaechong. Glass vessels from both sites turned out to be soda lime glass. We classified them further based on raw material used for soda - natron and marine plant ash.

  • A part of the bronze bell from Goryeo (918-1392) in the collection of Buyeo National Museum was missing, and it was noted to retain corrosion products and burial accretions. Chemical analysis showed that the chemical composition of the bronze bell is Cu (74.18%), Sn (9.58%), Pb (15.77%), and very small amounts of As, Fe, Sb, Bi, and Ag. It was noted that the microstructure of the bronze bell was mainly made up of α phase and α+δ eutectoid phase, and gray (S) and black (Pb segregation) prevailed. Conservation treatment has been done for the preservation of this bronze bell.

  • The Conservation Science Laboratory of the National Museum of Korea had drawn up the list of conservation treatment priority according to the artifact status in the collection and performed conservation treatment based on the priority list since 2006. This paper introduces the restoration process of the lost part of a black teacup(Sindo 1961) with newly developed restoration material. Part of the peeled off glaze was analyzed with LIBS and SEM-EDS analyser to find out the glaze ingredients that make the unique pattern of black teacup.
