  • This study was conducted to investigate the chemical characteristics of Precipitation at Seoul, Yangpyong, Hongchon and Inje in the central part of Korean peninsula during the period from March 1994 to November 1997. The precipitation samples were collected by automatic wet-only sampler. The samples were analyzed for major anions (SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, F-) and cations(NH4+, Ca2+, Mg+, Na+, K+), in addition to acidity and electrical conductivity. The analytical instrument for water soluble ionic components was ion chromatography. The volume - weighted mean PH were 4.73, 4.87, 4.89 and 4.81 at Seoul, Yangpyong, Hongchon and Inje, respectively. The sums of cation concentrations was slightly greater than the sums of anion concentrations. Also, the highest ion component was SO42- in anions and NH4+ in cations. The mean equivalent ratios of SO42- to NO3- were found by 2.96, 2.71, 2.43 and 2.25 at Seoul, Yangpyong, Hongchon and Inje, respectively. The factor analysis was conducted in order to make the large and diverse data set as manageable levels and to qualitatively examine the relationship between the variables. It showed that major sources of pollutants in precipitation were from the anthropogenic in Seoul, the natural in Hongchon, and the anthropogenic and natural in Yangpyong and Inje.

  • The removal of nitrogen oxides(NOx) from $N_{2}/O_{2}$ gas using a pulsed corona discharge was investigated as a function of the reduced electric field(E/N) and the energy density(J/L). A kinetic model was developed to characterize the chemical reactions taking place in a pulsed corona discharge reactor. The model calculates the fractional concentrations of radical species at each pulse-on period and utilizes the radicals to remove NOx for the subsequent pulse-off period. Electron collision reaction data are calculated using ELENDIF program to solve Boltzmann equation for electron energy distribution function, and the subsequent chemical reactions are calculated using CHEMKIN-II program to solve stiff ODE(ordinary differential equation) problems for species concentrations. The corona discharge energy per pulse and the time-space averaged E/N were obtained by fitting the model to experimental data. The model calculation shows good agreement with the experimental data, and predicts the formation of other species such as $NO_{2}$, $O_{3}$ and $N_{2}O$.

  • Budgets for water, nitrogen, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were determined in two 0.012 ha earthy-bottom ponds stocked with Israeli strain common carp at an initial stocking density of $20\;fish/m^3$. Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentrations increased continuously but later decreased in pond A as a consequence of high nitrification. COD concentrations increased during the experimental period due to the accumulation of feed input. Nutrient budgets showed that feed represented $94-95\%$ of nitrogen input and about 99% of organic matter input. Fish harvest accounted for $40\%$ of nitrogen and organic matter input. Seepage and water exchange removed $15-17\%$ of nitrogen input but only $1-2\%$ of organic matter. Draining of the ponds removed $20-26\%$ of input nitrogen, mostly in inorganic forms, but removed only minus organic matter. Fish and water column respiration accounted for $39\%$ of organic matter input, and benthic respiration accounted for $7-12\%$ of organic matter input. No significant change of nitrogen and organic matter in both pond bottoms were found during the three-month growth period. The unrecovered input nitrogen, about $6.3-13\%$, was lost through denitrification and ammonia volatilization. On a dry matter basis, fish growth removed $31\%$ of total feed input and left $69\%$ as metabolic wastes.

  • The triazacrown compound, 1,7-dioxa-4,10,13-triazacyclopentadecane trihydrobromide salt (Na3O2-3HBr) was synthesized. And this compound was used to synthesize the new ion exchanger, which combined with Merrifield peptide resin. This new ion exchanger had a capacity of 3.2 meq/g dry resin. And the distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions on this ion exchanger in the various concentrations of hydrochloric acid were determined. The ion exchange behaviors of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions in the various hydrochloric acid concentrations are, also, discussed.

  • In this study, horse spleen apoferritins were induced to form biominerals using up to 3000 Fe atoms per protein molecule. The morphology and crystallinity of the nanometer-sized biominerals formed in the ferritins were then analyzed using field emission-energy filtering-transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM). The ferritins were found to have reconstitution yields of 60-70% in the experiments. The mean core size of the ferritins varied somewhat with protein concentrations, indicating that crystal growth in ferritins could be controlled via protein concentrations. The core mineral size increased with the amount of Fe used. Lattice fringes of the core, associated with good crystallinity, were found in all samples. The lattice fringe images of a single domain ferrihydrite mineral appeared frequently in the (011) planes (d-spacing of 0.246 nm) under [100] zone axis in all samples of this study. In addition, the lattice image occasionally revealed fringes corresponding to the (100) planes (d = 0.254 nm) from the [001] zone axis, indicating the characteristic pattern of hexagonal crystal lattice. Diffraction patterns in the minerals identified as ferrihydrite were fitted well into the space group of $P3_{1c}$.

  • We fabricated ceria ($CeO_2$) nanofibers by applying a mixed solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and various concentrations of cerium nitrate hydrate ($Ce(NO_3)_3$) ranging from 15.0 to 26.0 wt % by the electrospinning process. Ceria nanofibers were obtained after calcining PVP/$Ce(NO_3)_3$ nanofiber composites at 873 and 1173 K. The SEM images indicated that the diameters of $CeO_2$ nanofibers calcined at 873 and 1173 K were smaller than those of nanofibers obtained at RT. As the amount of cerium increased, the diameter of $CeO_2$ nanofibers increased. XRD analysis revealed that the ceria nanofibers were in cubic form. TEM results revealed that the ceria nanofibers were formed by the interconnection of Ce oxide nanoparticles. The ceria nanofibers obtained at low concentrations of Ce (CeL) showed spotty ring patterns indicated that the ceria nanofibers were polycrystalline structure. And the ceria nanofibers obtained at high concentration of Ce (CeH) showed fcc (001) diffraction pattern. XPS study indicated that the oxidation of Ce shifted from $Ce^{3+}$ to $Ce^{4+}$ as the calcination temperature increased.

  • Dustfall particles were collected by the modified American dust jar (wide inlet bottle type) at 6 sampling sites in Pusan area from March, 1999 to February, 2000. Thirteen chemical species (Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Si, and Zn) were analyzed by AAS and ICP. The purposes of this study were to estimate qualitatively various bulk deposition flux of dustfall and insoluble components by applying regional and seasonal distribution. Dustfall amount of regional variations were found in order of coastal zone, industrial zone, commercial zone, agricultural zone and residential zone, and seasonal total dustfall had higher concentrations during spring for 6.741 ton/${km}^2$/season, lower concentrations during summer for 1.989 ton/${km}^2$/season, and annual total concentration was 17.742 ton/${km}^2$/year. The regional distributions of enrichment factor show well-defined anthropogenic metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) at industrial and agricultural zone, and contribution rate of soil particles were found in order of summer, fall, winter and spring. Factor loading effects of chemical composition of dustfall were found in order of road traffic emission source and combustion processed source, industrial activity source, soil source and marine source.

  • Butyltin compounds in seawater, sediments and organisms inside Jeju Harbor of Jeju Island, Korea, were quantitatively determined to assess the extent of contamination and to evaluate the bioaccumulation in Thais clavigera (gastropod), Liolophura japonica and Cellana nigrolineata. In addition, imposex in T. clavigera was used to assess the sublethal effect of tributyltin compounds and its usage as a specific biomarker for these compounds was also studied. The main species in seawater was tributyltin (TBT) in March and June, monobutyltin (MBT) in August, but in sediments and organisms it was dibutyltin (DBT) and TBT, respectively, irrespective of survey time. TBT, the most toxic to aquatic organisms among BTs, was found at concentrations which were sufficient to have a serous effect on the sensitive organisms upon chronic exposure. The high correlations (r>0.7) between BTs indicated that DBT and MBT were mainly degraded from TBT based on antifouling paints and their sources were negligible. The sedimentary organic matters have little influence on the distribution of BTs in marine environment and the lipid content in T. clavigera showed a significant correlation with TBT concentrations. Measurement of imposex T. clavigera was expected to be a very helpful tool for preliminary survey of BTs prior to trace analysis of those.

  • The critical micelle concentrations of decylpyridinium chloride in aqueous solutions have been determined by the electrical conductance measurements in the range of $10^{\circ}C$-$50^{\circ}C$. The temperature variation of the critical micelle concentrations has shown the minimum at the vicinity of $15^{\circ}C$. The Clausius-Clapeyron type equation of log (c.m.c.) versus temperature has been established. The values ${\Delta}Hm$ and the other thermodynamic properties associated with micelle formation have been determined using the above equation and compared with that of dodecylpyridinium chloride and dodecylpyridinium bromide.

  • The biocontrol agent, Serratia plymuthica A21-4, has been developed for controlling pepper Phytophthora blight. Serratia plymuthica A21-4 strongly inhibits the mycelial growth, zoospore formation, and cyst germination of Phytophthora capsici in vitro. The application of a cell suspension of strain A21-4 to pepper plants in pot experiments and in greenhouse successfully controlled the disease. The bacteria produced a potent antifungal substance which was a key factor in the suppression of Phytophthora capsici. The most active chemical com-pound was isolated and purified by antifungal activity-guided fractionation. The chemical structure was identified as a chlorinated macrolide $(C_{23}H_{31}O_8Cl)$ by spectroscopic (UV, IR, MS, and NMR) data, and was named macrocyclic lactone A21-4. The active compound significantly inhibited the formation of zoosporangia and zoospore and germination of cyst of P. capsici at concentrations lower than $0.0625{\mu}g/ml$. The effective concentrations of the macrocyclic lactone A21-4 for $ED_{50}$ of mycelial growth inhibition were $0.25{\mu}g/ml,\;0.25{\mu}g/ml,\;0.30{\mu}g/ml \;and\;0.75{\mu}g/ml$ against P. capsici, Pythium ultimum, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Botrytis cinerea, respectively.
