Cloud Generation Using a Huge Vertical Mine

  • In order to study the characteristics of cloud, a real-scale experiment for cloud generation was carried out using an extinct vertical mine (430 m height) located in the northeastern Honshu, Japan. The dry particles generated from the three-step concentrations of NaCl solutions were used for cloud generation. The number size distributions of initial dry particles and cloud droplets were monitored by Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) at bottom and upper sites of pit, respectively. The polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) method was employed to measure liquid water content ($W_L$) as a function of droplet size. Moreover the chemical properties of individual droplet replicas were determined by micro-PIXE. The CCN number concentration shows the lognormal form in dependence of the particle size, while the number size distributions of droplets are bimodal showing the peaks around $9{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ for every case. In comparison to background mineral particles, right shifting of size distribution line for NaCl particles was occurred. When NaCl solutions with three-step different concentrations were neulized, $W_L$ shows the strong droplet size dependence. It varied from $10.0mg\;m^{-3}$ up to $13.6mg\;m^{-3}$ with average $11.6mg\;m^{-3}$. A good relationship between $W_L$ and cloud droplet number concentration was obtained. Both chemical inhomogeneities (mixed components with mineral and C1) and homogeneities (only mineral components or C1) in individual droplet replicas were obviously observed from micro-PIXE elemental images.

  • In this study, the chemical fluid considered is sodium chloride sloutions. The concentrations for the sodium chloride solutions are varied from 0 to 20%. A series of lab oratory triaxial tests are performed on the cylindrical specimens of sand bentonite mixture with different (5, 10, 15%) sodium chloride content solutions. Deformation(elastic modulus, E) and strength (cohesion, c', and angle of friction, f') parameters are obtained from the triaxial tests and they are expressed as functions of conf'ming pressure and sodium chloride solution concentrations. The stress-strain-strength behavior based on the above strength parameters is introduced to the finite element method with a residual flow procedure (RFP). By integrating a slope stability (limit equilibrium) procedure in the finite element method, factors of safety with time are computed.

Adsorption Isotherms of Catechin Compounds on (+)Catechin-MIP

  • A molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) using (+)catechin ((+)C) as a template and acrylamide (AM) as a functional monomer was prepared. Acetonitrile was used as the porogen with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the crosslinker and 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as the initiator. The adsorption isotherms in the MIP were measured and the parameters of the equilibrium isotherms were estimated by linear and nonlinear regression analyses. The linear equation for original concentration and adsorpted concentrations was then expressed, and the adsorption equilibrium data were correlated into Langmuir, Freundlich, quadratic, and Langmuir Extension isotherm models. The mixture compounds of (+)C and epicatechin (EC) show competitive adsorption on specific binding sites of the (+)catechin-MIP. The adsorption concentrations of (+)C, epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), on the (+)catechin-molecular imprinted polymer were compared. Through the analysis, the (+)catechin-molecular imprinted polymer showed higher adsorption ability than blank polymer which was synthesized molecular imprinted polymer without (+)catechin. Furthermore, the competitive Langmuir isotherms were applied to the mixture compounds of (+)C and EC.

Characteristics of $PM_{2.5}$ Particles Measured in the Background Sites of Korea (우리나라 청정 지역에서 측정한 $PM_{2.5}$ 입자의 특성)

  • Atmospheric fine particles $(PM_{2.5})$ were collected at the background sites, Kangwha, Taean, and Kosan and characterized to understand their behaviors at the sites. Daily samples of $PM_{2.5}$ mass were measured and ionic species, carbonaceous species, and gaseous species were analyzed. Four-day backward trajectory analysis was also carried out. The mean concentrations of anthropogenic species were highest at Kangwha among three sites, while contributions from sea salts wree highest at Taean during the measurement period due to higher wind speed at Taean. Major chemical components in fine particles were sulfate, organic carbon, nitrate, and ammoniu. Most of the non-sea-salt (nss) sulfates in $PM_{2.5}$ might be present as ammonium sulfates at these sites. Most air parcels arriving at Kangwha and Taean were from northern China. Therefore, both sites were thought to be affected by the same air parcel. At Kosan, during the measurement period, air parcels were from either northern China or sourthern China. The nss sulfate concentration in the air parcels from southern China was higher, while the nss calcium, nitrate, and ammonium concentrations were higher when the air parcels were from northern China.

Chemical Responses and Fitness-Related Characteristics of Dichlofluanid-Resistant and -Sensitive Botrytis cinerea Isolates (Dichlofluanid 저항성 및 감수성 잿빛곰팡이병균(Botryits cinerea)의 약제 반응과 생태 적응력과 관련된 특성)

  • Nine hundred and ninety-two isolates of Botrytis cinerea were obtained from infected strawberries, tomatoes and cucumbers in Taejon, Gongju, Puyo, Nonsan and Kimhae in Korea. Six hundred forty-two (64.7%) isolates were benomyl resistant (BR), 245 (24.7%) were procymidone resistant (PR), and 105 (10.6%) were dichlofluanid resistant (DR). In the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test, DR isolates showed mycelial growth on the PDA incorporated with 100 or 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of dichlofluanid, while dichlofluanid sensitive (DS) isolates did not grow on the PDA incorporated even with 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of dichlofluanid. Chemical concentrations for inhibition of spore germination were much lower than those for inhibition of mycelial growth. IC50 values, the effective concentrations for 50% inhibition of spore germination, for DR were 0.11~0.29 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, whereas they were 0.04~0.09 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml for DS isolates. In comparison of fitness-related characteristics such as virulence, sclerotial formation, and sporulation, DR isolates were inferior to DS isolates. However, mycelial growth was little different between DR isolates and DS isolates.

Estimate of Surface Ozone Concentration on Sunny Summer Days in Seoul Area by the Photochemical-Trajectory Model (광화학-궤적 모델에 의한 여름철 맑은 날 서울지방의 지상 오존 농도 추정)

  • A Photochemical-Trajectory model was used to understand the production of ozone in the atmospheric boundary layer. This model was composed of the trajectory and the photochemical models. To calculate trajectories of air parcels, winds were obtained from the three-dimensional nonhydrostatic mesoscale model (PSU/NCAR MM5V2), and the results were interpolated into constant height surfaces. Numerical integration in the trajectory model was performed by the Runge-Kutta method. The photochemical model consisted of chemical reactions and photodissociation processes. Chemical equations were integrated by the semi-implicit Bulirsch-Stoer method. We performed our experiments from 21 July to 23 July 1994 during the summer time for Seoul area. During the time of maximum ozone concentration in Seoul, four trajectories of air parcels which traveled from Inchon to Seoul were selected. Ozone concentrations estimated by two models are compared with observed one in Seoul area and the photochemical-trajectory model is better fitted than pure photochemical model. During the selected period, high ozone concentrations in Seoul area were more influenced by transferred pollutants from Inchon than emitted pollutants in Seoul.

A Study on the Chemical Characteristics of Acid Rain in Taejon City (대전지역 산성강우의 화학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • From March 1990 to August 1991, every each 5mm bulk precipitation samples were collected at one residental area in Taejon City to investigate chemical characteristics of acid rain. Major ion concentrations of rain samples $(pH, SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, CL^-, NH_4^+, Na^+, K^+, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+})$ were analysed and compared with the concentration of air pollutants (T. S. P, $SO_2, NO_x$) that were measured by Ministry of Environment. The results of statistical analysis are as followings. Rain pH was relatively high on October and January and relatively low on August, November and February. Major anion is sulfate, and it's concentration is 2.36 times higher than nitrate's, and major cations are ammonium, sodium and calcium ion. Monthly variation of sulfate and calcium concentrations are higher than the others. Ion concentration and rain pH were correlated negatively with rainfall amount. Major ions in rain samples were $SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, NH_4^+, Ca^{2+}$ and regression equations are proposed by multiple regression of measured data. Also, regression equation between air pollutants(T. S. P, $SO_2$) and $SO_4^{2-}, Na^+, K^+, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+} ions in rain samples were made. From this wer can predict rain pH.

A Sensitivity Analysis on Numerical Grid Size of a Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Model (EFDC) for the Saemangeum Reservoir (새만금호 3차원 수리.수질모델(EFDC)의 수치격자 민감도 분석)

  • Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.

Characteristics of the Sedimentary Environment in Yoja Bay in the Summer of 1998 (1998년 하계 여자만의 저질환경 특성)

  • As a part of basic investigation to Fishery Purge Project for the Special Administrative in Chollanamdo Province, the sedimentary environmental characteristics of Yoja Bay at 15 stations were studied. The analysis was carried out in July, 1998, through studies of Loss On Ignition (LOI) by depth, Total Sulfide (T-5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations and Grain-size distribution. The LOI value was found to be 6.20-12.20% (mean of 8.89%), with the neighboring Sunhakri and Haksanri areas showing slightly higher values. These values were similar to the LOI values observed in the Hansan-Koje Bay and Jinju Bay areas on the southern coast of Korea. T-S and COD concentrations were found to be, respectively, 0.060-0.104 mg/gㆍd (mean of 0.052 mg/gㆍd) and 5.53-29.71 mg/gㆍd(mean of 13.24 mg/gㆍd), not exceeding eutrophication limits. T-S concentration was especially high at stations close to the central areas of the bay and inland areas, which caused by organic matter input from the nearby agricultural areas. COD concentration was very high at stations nearby the bay entrance and Doonbyungdo, but the mean value was lower than that of Hansan-Koje Bay. This leads us to believe that the level of pollution in Yoja Bay is not significant. The prevailing sediment composition was mud, consisting of 61.38% silt and 34.87% clay. The effect of land use characteristics on heavy metal contaminations of sediments from some gullypot catchments in Seoul (주요산업활동 유형에 따른 서울시 도로변 하수퇴적물의 중금속오염 특성)

  • There are many different chemical pollutants that originate from atmospheric deposition and transportational activities along roads. This paper review the characteristics of heavy metal pollution, relationships between land use and pollutant load in urban area. Four land use areas in Seoul were selected for sampling and study with different characteristics during the period from April 1998 and February 2000. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments settling down in a gully pot to evaluate the contamination for heavy metals. The sediment samples from gully pots were characterized by the chemical extraction experiments. Sediments are characterized by very high concentrations of heavy metals, probably because of a long-term accumulation of vehicle- and industrial-related pollutants. The characteristics of heavy metal pollution show that each land use has different sources of contaminations. Mean Zn concentration in Yeouido and Junggu areas is 2-3 times higher than those in Dobonggu area. This suggests that Zn may be derived from the source of automobile traffic. The mean concentrations of Cu and Cr are very significantly high in Junggu and Gurogu areas and indicate that the industrial activities may contribute to the accumulation of Cu and Cr in sediments. The low Pb levels throughout the whole study areas in Seoul can be accounted for the use of unleaded gasoline since 1987.
