Photochemical Degradation of Dimethyl Phthalate by Fe(III)/tartrate/H2O2 System

  • Photochemical degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) in Fe(III)/tartrate/$H_2O_2$ system was investigated utilizing fluorescent lamps as the primary light source. Effects of initial pH, light source, and initial concentration of each reactant on DMP photodegradation was examined. The results show that the system was able to effectively photodegrade DMP utilizing visible light. Fluorescent lamp, halide lamp, UV lamp and sunlight could all be used as the light sources. The optimal pH ranged among 3.0-4.0 for the system. Increases of the initial concentrations of Fe(III) and $H_2O_2$ accelerated the photodegradation of DMP, whereas excessively high initial tartrate concentration resulted in the decrease of photodegradation efficiency and rate of DMP.

  • Increasing demands on fossil fuel have led to the unprecedented attraction to microalgal biofuel as an alternative energy. In this study, we investigated growth and lipid productions of microalga Nannochloris oculata under various carbon dioxide or nitrogen source concentrations and irradiance conditions. Biomass production of N. oculata was highest under 2% $CO_2$ with 0.3 flow rate (vvm). In addition, biomass productivities were proportional to the concentration of nitrogen source, whereas lipid biosynthesis was suppressed under higher nitrogen concentration (up to 50 mg/L). High irradiation ($160{\sim}180\;{\mu}mol/m^2{\cdot}s$) enhanced growth rate and lipid production of N. oculata.

  • Nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ ($TiO_2$:N) nano-particles with a pure anatase crystalline structure were successfully synthesized through the hydrolysis of $TiCl_4$ in an ammonia aqueous solution. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), $N_2$-sorption, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS) techniques. The absorption edge of nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ shifted into the visible wavelength region. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances were investigated for the $TiO_2$ mesoporous electrodes doped with different nitrogen concentrations. The $TiO_2$:N electrodes exhibited much higher PEC responses compared to the pure $TiO_2$ electrode because of the significantly enhanced visible-photoresponsibility of the $TiO_2$:N electrodes.

Separation of D and L Amino Acids by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

  • Separation of optical isomers of some derivatives of amino acids by reversed-phase HPLC has been accomplished by adding a chelate of an optically active amino acid to copper(Ⅱ) to the mobile phase. Cu(Ⅱ) complexes of L-proline and L-hydroxyproline in the mobile phase showed different degrees of separation. Optical isomers of DNS derivatives of amino acids are selectively separated, but those of several other derivatives are not at all. The kinds of buffer agents, the pH, and the concentrations of acetonitrile and the Cu(Ⅱ) ligand all affect the separations. The elution behavior between D and L DNS-amino acids appears to depend on the alkyl side chain of the amino acids. A chromatographic mechanism is proposed that is based on a stereospecificity of the formation of ternary complexes by the D, L-DNS-amino acids and the chiral additive associated with the stationary phase. The steric effects of the ligand exchange reactions are related with the feasibility of cis and/or trans attack of the amino acids to the binary chiral chelate retained on the stationary phase.

Numerical Model Simulation of DF-CO$_2$ Transfer Chemical Laser

  • Theoretical analysis of DF-$CO_2$ transfer chemical laser is performed through simple kinetic model consisting of 30 chemical reactions. In this model, we calculate the power theoretically by solving the rate equations, which are related to the $D_2\;+\;F_2$ chain reaction and the DF-$CO_2$ resonance energy transfer, combined with both the gain processes and the stimulated emission processes. The calculated powers are verified with previously reported results in good agreements. The output energy rises linearly with the increase in pressure, and the duration time of output pulse show the inverse dependence on pressure. Through the detailed calculation of temperature and concentrations of reactants as a function of time, it is found that the deactivation processes of DF(v) can be neglected in low pressure, but they have to be considered in high pressure. From the parametric study for the variation on [$D_2]/[F_2$] and [$CO_2]/[D_2\;+\;F_2$] at several constant total pressure, the optimum lasing conditions are found to be in a range of 1/3 to 1 and 2 to 4, respectively.

전주시에서 채수된 강수의 화학적 조성 (Chemical Composition of Rainwater in Chonju-city, Korea)

  • Precipitation sampls were collected in Chonju-city during October 1994 to September 1995 and were analysed for major ions (N $a^{+}$, $K^{+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, C $l^{[-10]}$ , NO/$_3$, S $O_4$$^{2-}$) and trace metals (Al, Cd, Ni, Pb, Sr, Zn) in addition to pH, in order to understand the chemical characteristics of acid rain and to estimate the origin of the determined ions. Most rain showed a neutral or alkaline character, and only 35% had a pH lower than 5.6. S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ are identified as the primary contributors to precipitation acidity in this region. Neutralization of precipitation acidity occurs as a result of the dissolution of alkaline compounds containing $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $K^{+}$. S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ precipitation concentrations exhibit a seasonal pattern in which higher concentrations are observed during spring months and lower concentrations during summer months. However, the seasonal behavior of $H^{+}$ concentrations differs from this pattern, in that the highest concentrations occur during autumn months, owing to the different influence of neutralization processes. In all rain, S $O_4$$^{2-}$ concentration exceeded NO/$_3$$^{[-10]}$ concentration. The contribution of maritime sources to the total S $O_4$$^{2-}$ concentration was very low or negligible. For rain strongly affacted by yellow sand, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $K^{+}$ ions show a sharp increase in concentration, reflecting the increased amount of dust and soil suspended in atmosphere. At the same time, S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ concentrations are at their highest levels while $H^{+}$ values are not comparably elevated, presumably beacause much of the acidity has been neutralized by alkaline substances. The seasonal variance of trace metal concentrations in rainwater is similar to that of major cations. The annual wet flux of acidic pollutants and trace metals wat calculated to be as follows: N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ ; 2.32 g/$m^2$, S $O_4$$^{2-}$, 5.34 g/$m^2$, Al; 6.30 mg/$m^2$, Cd; 0.62 mg/$m^2$, Ni; 4.08 mg/$m^2$, Pb: 9.76 mg/$m^2$, Sr; 5.94 mg/$m^2$, Zn; 111 mg/$m^2$./$m^2$.

올리고키토산에 의한 토마토 역병과 감자 역병의 방제 (Control of Late Blight of Tomato and Potato by Oilgochitosan)

  • 키토산은 D-glucosamine과 N-acetyl-D-glucosamine이 ${\beta}$-(1-4)로 연결된 직선상의 다당류이다. 분자량이 3,000 amu 이상인 키토산에 대한 in vivo 항균활성 및 저항성 유도 활성에 대한 보고는 많지만, 분자량이 3,000 이하인 올리고키토산에 대한 in vivo 항균활성에 대한 논문은 거의 전무한 상태이다. 본 연구에서 올리고키토산은 P. infestans에 의해 발생하는 토마토 역병에 대하여 500 ${\mu}g$/ml과 1,000 ${\mu}g$/ml 수준에서 94% 이상의 매우 높은 접종 1일전 예방효과를 보였으며, 고추 탄저병과 밀 붉은녹병에 대해서는 500 ${\mu}g$/ml과 1,000 ${\mu}g$/ml 수준에서 67% 내지 89%의 중간 정도의 에방효과를 항온항습실 조건에서 보였다. 다른 한편으로 올리고키토산은 고추 탄저병에 대하여 접종 16시간 후 치료효과를 보였지만, 토마토 역병에 대해서는 치료효과를 전혀 보이지 않았다. 포장에서 올리고키토산 액제는 감자 역병과 토마토 역병에 대하여 각각 72%와 48%의 방제효과를 보였다. 이상의 결과는 올리고키토산이 감자 및 토마토 역병 방제를 위한 친환경 유기농자재로서 사용이 가능하다는 것을 강력하게 나타낸다.

Estimation of Initial Concentrations of Phenanthrene and Atrazine from Soil Properties and Bioavailability During Aging

  • Contaminated sites are often abandoned for an extended period of time, thus organopollutants becoming sequestered. The information on the initial concentrations of the contaminants would be helpful for the economic bioremediation of the chemicals. The present study estimated the initial concentrations of atrazine and phenanthrene through multiple regression analyses using soil properties and the amount of chemicals available in situ. Percentage mineralized or extracted was best correlated with organic C or logarithm of organic C, and the $R^2$ values were 0.548 and 0.894 for atrazine and phenanthrene, respectively. Estimation of the initial concentration of the chemicals was then calculated from both the percentage mineralized or extracted and the amount of chemicals extracted or mineralized. Results showed that the estimation of the initial concentration of the chemical at the time of contamination is feasible.

  • Ginseng root explants and calli were cultured on modified Murashine and Skoog's media supplemented with different concentrations of organic or inorganic compounds and plant growth requlators to clarify the effects of chemical compositon and plant growth regulators in the medium on the growth of ginseng calli and the production of ginseng saponin. For optimum growth of ginseng calli, the concentrations of 2, 4-D and sucrose were in the range of 1 to 5 mg/l and 1 to 3%, respectively. And it was clarified that sucrose, nitrogen, phosphate, calcium, magnesium, plant growth regulators and their concentrations influcenced the relative biosynthesis of saponin in tissue cultures of Panax ginseng.

  • In a previous study by Kim et al. (2000), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has been demonstrated to be effective against algae that cause red tides. To secure the environmental safely of the chemical in practical use, effect of NaOCl, at concentrations required for algicidal activity, on the histology of rockfish and little neck clam was examined. When the animals were exposed to NaOCl at concentrations of 0.5 or 2ppm for 1 hr, there was no exposure-associated histological change in either animal. As the experimental exposure condition was set in consideration of the use, our results provide safety information necessary for practical application to marine fields.
