This study was conducted to estimate if the level of several chemical ingredients including alkanolamines or ethanolamines (EA) examined in the specific synthetic metalworking fluid (MWF) "A" can cause anti-microbial activity and health effect. Three water-based MWF products ("A", "B", and "C") were studied every week for two months (from June 1, 2002 to July 30, 2002). Chemical ingredients such as formaldehyde, boron, EA, and copper were examined. In the sump where MWF "A" was used, not only the total level of EA, monoethanolamine(MEA), diethanolamine(DEA) and triethanolamine(TEA), but also boron level were significantly higher than those of the other MWFs. ANOVA statistical tests indicated that levels of pH, alkalinity, boron, MEA, DEA and TEA in MWF "A" were significantly higher than those in other MWF types. Correlation tests also found that levels of pH, alkalinity, boron, MEA, DEA and TEA in MWF "A" are significantly correlated. We suggested the assumptions that excessive concentrations of EA, and borate at a high pH level, may cause anti-microbial resistance synergically. To demonstrate this assumption, additional study is needed to examine the relationship between the levels of microbes and excessive concentrations of EA, and borate at a high pH level.

The analytical methods and their ambient levels of organic nitrogenous compounds such as nitrosamines, nitramines (nitroamines), imines, amides and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) in the atmosphere are summarized and discussed. Sampling for the analysis of organic nitrogenous compounds was mostly conducted using high volume air sampler. The direct liquid extraction (DLE) using sonification and the pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) using the accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) have been frequently employed for the extraction of organic nitrogenous compounds in the atmospheric samples. After extraction, clean-up via filtration and the solid phase extraction (SPE) and concentrations using nitrogen and rotary evaporator have been generally conducted but in some studies the clean-up and concentration steps have been omitted to prevent the loss of analyte and improve the recovery rate of the analytical procedure. Instrumental analysis was mainly carried out using gas chromatography (GC) or the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with the single quadrupole mass spectrometer or tandem mass spectrometer in the electron ionization (EI), positive chemical ionization (PCI) and negative chemical ionization (NCI) mode and analysis sensitivity of nitrosamines and nitramines were higher in NCI mode. Desirable sampling and analysis methods for analyzing particulate organic nitrogenous compounds are suggested.
The effects of bile salts (BS) on the stability of dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) liposomes were investigated, observing apparent absorbance of vacant liposomes and calcein release from entrapped liposomes. Unilamellar liposomes were prepared by using a small quantity of palmitoly-immunoglobulin G(IgG) ($2.5{\times}10^{-4}$ mo1/lipid mol) to stabilize the bilayer phase of the unsaturated DOPE which by itself does not form stable liposomes. The destabilization of PE immunoliposomes by papain, clearly demonstrates that the IgG is essential for stabilization of PE bilayer. Approximately 4% of the entrapped calcein was released from the PE liposomes after 1 hr from liposome formation. Calcein release and absorbance of liposomes depended on the BS/lipid ratio because of the solubilization of lipid molecule in bilayer and the formation of mixed micelles. At very low BS concentrations, the incorporation of BS induced BS/lipid aggregates in the outer vesicles monolayer, while high BS concentrations, mixed micelles were formed. Chelate and its conjugates as $3{\alpha},\;7{\alpha},\;12{\alpha}-trihydroxy$ BS induce the concentration of the $3{\alpha}$, $12{\alpha}-dihydroxy$ BS at half-maximal solubilization of immunoliposomes to approximately 2.5-, or 5-fold. Conjugation of BS with glycine or taurine slightly enhanced their capacities to perturb membranes.

In vitro studies were conducted to dertermine the frequency rate of spontaneous resistance to LB20304 and to dertermine whether cross-resistance to other antimicrobial agents develops. In eight strains of bacteria, the frequency of mutation to LB20304 at the concentrations of four and eight times the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) ranaged from less than 4.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-10}$ to 2.2 $\{times}$ $10^{-10}$ . These results were similar to those founf for other new fluoroquinolones. THe development of stepwise resistance was determined by repeated subculture in broth in the presence of increasing concentration of the compounds. Exposure of bacteria to increasing concentrations of LB20304 resulted in the selection of organisms with higher MICs. There were 4- to 128-fold increases in the MIC of LB20304 for bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, those strains selected after repeated exposure were well within the susceptibility range for LB20304 except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The resistant isolates selected with LB20304 showed cross-resistance when tested against ciprofloxacin and vice versa.

The efficiency of three complex surfactants based on sunflower oil and nitrogen containing compounds as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in $CO_2$-saturated 1% NaCl solution, has been determined by weight loss and LPR corrosion rate measurements. These compounds inhibit corrosion even at very low concentrations. The inhibition process was attributed to the formation of an adsorbed film on the metal surface that protects the metal against corrosive media. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing the concentration of the studied inhibitors. Maximum inhibition efficiency of the surfactants is observed at concentrations around its critical micellar concentration (CMC). Adsorption of complex surfactants on the mild steel surface is in agreement with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and the calculated Gibbs free energy values confirm the chemical nature of the adsorption. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence microscopy (EDRF) observations of the electrode surface confirmed the existence of such an adsorbed film.
Contents of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in the sediments of Ulsan Bay were investigated by the sequential extraction methods that classifies heavy metals into five types of chemical forms: exchangeable, bound to carbonates, bound to Fe-Mn oxides, bound to organic matter and residual. The analyses were determined by using an ICP-MS. Total Cr concentrations in the sediments were in the range of 41.6-96.4, Cu 60.7-680, Zn 189-1954, Cd 33.1-83.4, and Pb 138-567 mg/kg. Results of sequential fractionation indicates that relatively high proportion ( ~44%) of Cu is associated with organic matter. A large proportion of Pb is associated with three types of chemical forms: Fe-Mn oxides, organic matter, and residual. There were significant correlation in concentrations between the exchangeable components and total organic carbons. The heavy metals In the residual phase cannot be easily released to the environment since these are bound to the crystal lattice. But, reducible and organic Phases con a significant amount of most heavy metals. Therefore, there is Potential dancer of a substantial amount of metals becoming chemically mobile with environmental changes.
A possibility of the implementation of a quartz crystal sensor to the determination of chemical oxygen demand is examined by checking the electrochemical behavior of the sensor in a glucose solution. Since the surface of a quartz crystal has to be oxidized, a relatively active metal is coated on the surface of a usual 9 MHz AT-cut crystal. The electrochemical behavior is investigated by measuring the changes of current, resonant frequency and resonant resistance while a constant potential is applied. The crystal is installed in a specially designed container, and a quartz crystal analyzer is utilized to measure the frequency and resistance simultaneously. The variations of the measurements are examined at different concentrations of glucose solution, and a proper relation between the concentrations of glucose solution, and a proper relation between the concentration and the measurements is analyzed. As a result, it is found that a linear relation between the concentration of less than 900 ppm and the peak current when a constant potential of -180 mV (SSCE) is applied. The relation can be utilized for the determination of glucose concentration in sea water, and considering a direct relation between gluose concentration and chemical oxygen demand tells a possibility of the measurement of chemical oxygen demand using quartz crystal oscillators.
Glycidyl methacrylate linked poly(dimethylsiloxane) (GMA-PDMS) was synthesized and used as a stabilizer for the dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in supercritical $CO_2$. This study examined the effect of the concentrations of the stabilizer, 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator, and MMA on the yield, molecular weight, and morphology of the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) product. PMMA was obtained in 94,6% yield using only 0,87 wt% GMA-PDMS, When the AIBN concentration was increased from 025 to 1.06 wt%, the molecular weight and particle size of the PMMA decreased from 56,600 to 21,600 and from 4.1 to $2.7{\mu}m$, whereas the particle size distribution increased from 1.3 to 1.9. The $M_n$ of the PMMA product ranged from 41,600 and 55,800 under typical polymerization conditions. The PMMA particle diameter ranged from 1.8 to $11.0{\mu}m$ and the particle size distribution ranged from 1.4 to 1.8.
Objective: The objectives were to develop prediction equations for digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) of feed ingredients and diets for pigs based on chemical composition and to evaluate the accuracy of the equations using in vivo data. Methods: A total of 734 data points from 81 experiments were employed to develop prediction equations for DE and ME in feed ingredients and diets. The CORR procedure of SAS was used to determine correlation coefficients between chemical components and energy concentrations and the REG procedure was used to generate prediction equations. Developed equations were tested for the accuracy according to the regression analysis using in vivo data. Results: The DE and ME in feed ingredients and diets were most negatively correlated with acid detergent fiber or neutral detergent fiber (NDF; r = -0.46 to r = -0.67; p<0.05). Three prediction equations for feed ingredients reflected in vivo data well as follows: DE = 728+0.76×gross energy (GE)-25.18×NDF (R2 = 0.64); ME = 965+0.66×GE-24.62×NDF (R2 = 0.60); ME = 1,133+0.65×GE-29.05×ash-23.17×NDF (R2 = 0.67). Conclusion: In conclusion, the equations suggested in the current study would predict energy concentration in feed ingredients and diets.
