The $TiO_2$ nanotube/Ti electrode are used as an anode in thin-film lithium microbatteries is known to have high oxidation-reduction potential of 1.8 V (vs. $Li/Li^+$). It can prevent from dendrite growth of lithium during charging. The $TiO_2$ nanotube/Ti electrode was prepared by anodizing at constant voltages for thin-film lithium microbatteries. The capacities of $TiO_2$ nanotube/Ti anode prepared by anodizing at 10 V, 20 V and 30 V were observed to be $23.9{\mu}Ah\;cm^{-2}$, $43.1{\mu}Ah\;cm^{-2}$ and $74.0{\mu}Ah\;cm^{-2}$. We identified it was found that the capacity of $TiO_2$ nanotube/Ti increases with increasing anodizing voltage and the anatase structure of $TiO_2$ nanotube/Ti compared with amorphous structure has batter cycle performance than amorphous $TiO_2$ nanotube/Ti.

$AB_2$ type Zr-based Laves phase alloys have been studied for potential application as negative electrode in Ni/MH batteries. However, They have a serious disadvantage of poor activation behavior in KOH solution. In this work, a new method of alloy design method was tried for improving Zr-based alloy activation. this method has focused on phase controlling to make multi-phase microstructure. In the case of multi-phase Zr-V-Mn-Ni shows good performance in activation, but activation mechanism has not been known. So, we were in search of elucidating this mechanism, Using morphological and electrochemical analysis, we could find that surface morphology and electocatalytic activity of the alloy change during immersion in KOH solution. V-rich second phases are selectively corroded and dissolved and then become Ni-rich phases. Resulting from these surface reaction in KOH solution, self-hydrogen charging occurs through Ni-rich phase. However, the alloy has poor cyclic durability because of such a corrosion mechanism. Therefore, finally we developed durable alloys by substitution of other alloying element.

Decay processes of accumulated charge in e-beam irradiated polymers during elevating temperature are observed using pulsed electro-acoustic measurement system. Since the polymeric materials have many superior properties such as light-weight, good mechanical strength, high flexibility and low cost, they are inevitable materials for spacecrafts. In space environment, however, the polymers sometimes have serious damage by irradiation of high energy charged particles. When the polymers of the spacecraft are irradiated by high energy charged particles, some of injected charges accumulate and remain for long time in the bulk of the polymers. Since the bulk charges sometimes cause the degradation or breakdown of the materials, the investigation of the charging and the decay processes in polymeric materials under change of temperature is important to decide an adequate material for the spacecrafts. By measuring the charge behavior in e-beam irradiated polymer, such as polyimide or polystyrene, it is found that the various accumulation and decay patterns are observed in each material. The results seem to be useful and be helpful to progress in the reliability of the polymers for the spacecraft.

The resistive switching behaviors of Pt nanodisk on Nb-doped SrTiO3 single-crystal have been studied with conductive atomic force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum. The nanometer sizes of Pt disks were formed by using self-assembled patterns of silica nanospheres on Nb-doped SrTiO3 single-crystal semiconductor film using the Langmuir-Blodgett, followed by the metal deposition with e-beam evaporation. The conductance images shows the spatial mapping of the current flowing from the TiN coated AFM probe to Pt nanodisk surface on Nb:STO single-crystal substrate, that was simultaneously obtained with topography. The bipolar resistive switching behaviors of Pt nanodisk on Nb:STO single-crystal junctions was observed. By measuring the current-voltage spectroscopy after the forming process, we found that switching behavior depends on the charging and discharging of interface trap state that exhibit the high resistive state (HRS) and low resistive state (LRS), respectively. The results suggest that the bipolar resistive switching of Pt/Nb:STO single-crystal junctions can be performed without the electrochemical redox reaction between tip and sample with the potential application of nanometer scale resistive switching devices.

Charged and uncharged particle motions and collection characteristics around a bipolar charged rectangular shape electret fiber are studied numerically. Particle inertia, fluid drag, Coulomb force and polarization force are considered to predict the particle motion around the electret fiber. The effects of particle sizes, flow velocities, number of charges and polarities are also systematically investigated. For small size particles, the single fiber collection efficiency is greatly dependent on the charge polarity and the number of charges on a particle. However, particles larger than 5.mu.m do not show charging effect on collection efficiencies in the flow velocity ranges from 1.5 cm/s to 150 cm/s when the maximum charges are within +5 to -10. The results show that a strong electric field gradient at the corner of the bipolar charged fiber plays a very important role on collecting particles regardless of its charge polarity because of the polarization force. It also shows that the most penetrating particle size for a single electret fiber decreases as the flow velocity increases and the number of charges of a particle decreases.

Recently, voltage sag from sudden increasing loads is also one of the major problems inside the utility network. In order to compensate the voltage sag problem, power compensation device systems could be a good solution method. In case of voltage sag, an energy source is needed to overcome the energy loss caused by the voltage sag. Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) is a very promising source of this energy due to its fast response of charging and discharging time. Before constructing the power electronic delivering system for the SMES, it is necessary to simulate the system to understand its behavior. Nowadays, a lot of devices have been developed to compensate voltage sag such as Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR), Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM) and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). In this paper, focus is given only on DVR system which will be simulated by using PSCAD/EMTDC software.

This paper introduces the mechanism of the ESD(electrostatic discharge) in the HDD spindle system using FDBs(fluid dynamic bearings). When a HDD(hard disk drive) spindle system is rotating, triboelectric charging occurs in the FDBs through the friction between the lubricant and the rotating shaft or between the lubricant and stationary sleeve. And this electrostatic charge is accumulated in the rotating parts of the HDD spindle system because they are insulated from the ground by the lubricant. This research shows experimentally that the behavior of electric charge and discharge in the FDB spindle system is the same as that of a capacitor. It also measures the electrostatic voltage difference between the rotating and stationary parts in the FDB spindle system due to the change of humidity, supporting load and motor speed. This research shows that the control of ESD is required in the HDD spindle system using FDBs, because the electrostatic charge accumulated in the FDB spindle system may cause the breakdown damage of the GMR head and data loss consequently.

In certain applications, such as IPT-based EV charger (IPTEC), any variation in alignment and distance between pickup and charger primary leads to a change in leakage and magnetic impedance magnitudes. The power transmission capacity is not always at the maximum level because of these variations. This study proposes a new low-cost tracking method that achieves the Maximum Inductive Power Transmission Capacity (MIPTC). Furthermore, in the proposed method, the exchange of information between load and source is not required. For an application such as IPTEC, the load detected by the IPTEC varies continuously with time because of the change in state of the charge. This load variation causes a significant variation in IPT resonant circuit voltage gain. However, the optimized charging output voltage should be kept constant. From the analysis of the behavior of the IPT circuit at different working frequencies and load conditions, a MIPTC operation point that is independent of load condition can be identified. Finally, the experimental results of a developed prototype IPT circuit test show the performance of the proposed method.

Secondary batteries become more important in our lives as the use of portable electric devices, such as camera, cellular phone, laptop, etc. Especially, because of their high energy densities and high voltage, lithium-ion batteries are being used in many systems. For the optimum design of such systems which include lithium-ion batteries, virtual prototype is required generally. However, since the complex chemical and physical processes are involved, the behavior of battery becomes harder to be predicted compared with that of electric and mechanic devices. This paper, proposes a new static model of lithium secondary battery, which accounts for nonlinear equilibrium potentials, rate and temperature dependencies, thermal effects, lifetime characteristic. The results of the simulation of the model are analysed and compared with experimental data to inspect their validity.
