  • Analogous to Singh's (1978) characterization of positive-Poisson distributioin and Shanmugam and Singh's (1992) characterization of logarithmic series distribution, a characterization and its statistical application of the negative binomial distribution truncated at zero are given in this paper. While it is known that under certain conditions the negative binomial distribution truncted at zero approaches the positive-Poisson and the logarithmic series distributions, we show here that the results of this paper approach in limit the results of Singh, and Shanmugam and Singh, respectively. Using the biologicla data from Sampford (1955), we illusrate our results. Also, expressions are explicitly given to test the hypothesis whether a random sample is indeed from a geometric distribution.

  • Traditional traffic identification methods based on wellknown port numbers are not appropriate for the identification of new types of Internet applications. This paper proposes a new method to identify current Internet traffic, which is a preliminary but essential step toward traffic characterization. We categorized most current network-based applications into several classes according to their traffic patterns. Then, using this categorization, we developed a flow grouping method that determines the application name of traffic flows. We have incorporated our method into NG-MON, a traffic analysis system, to analyze Internet traffic between our enterprise network and the Internet, and characterized all the traffic according to their application types.

  • Elastic and electromagnetic waves can be used to gather important information about particulate materials. To facilitate smart geophysical characterization of particulate materials, their fundamental properties are discussed and experimental procedures are presented for both elastic and electromagnetic waves. The first application is related to the characterization of particulate materials using shear waves, concentrating on changes in effective stress during consolidation, multi-phase phenomena with relation to capillarity, and microscale characteristics of particles. The second application involves electromagnetic waves, focusing on stratigraphy detection in layered soils, estimation of void ratio and its spatial distribution, and conduction in unsaturated soils. Experimental results suggest that shear waves allow studying particle contact phenomena and the evolution of interparticle forces, while electromagnetic waves give insight into the characteristics of the fluid phase and its spatial distribution.

  • This paper presents the development of reservoir characterization model equipped with parallelized genetic algorithm, and its application for a heterogeneous reservoir system with integration of the well data and multi-phase production data. A parallel processing method performed by PC-cluster was applied to the developed model in order to reduce time for an inverse calculation. By utilizing the developed model, we performed the inverse calculation with the production data obtained from three layered reservoir system to estimate porosity and permeability distribution. As a result, the pressures observed at well almost identical to those calculated by the developed model. Also, it was confirmed that parallel processing could be applied for reservoir characterization study efficiently.

  • The paper deals with the application of radio isotopic non-destructive technique in the characterization of two industrial grade anion exchange resins Indion GS-300 and Indion-860. For the characterization of the two resins, $^{131}I$ and $^{82}Br$ were used as tracer isotopes to trace the kinetics of iodide and bromide ion-isotopic exchange reactions. It was observed that the values of specific reaction rate ($min^{-1}$), amount of iodide ion exchanged (mmol), initial rate of iodide ion exchange (mmol/min) and log $K_d$ were calculated as 0.328, 0.577, 0.189 and 19.7 respectively for Indion GS-300 resin, which was higher than the respective values of 0.180, 0.386, 0.070 and 17.0 calculated for Indion-860 resins when measured under identical experimental conditions. Also at a constant temperature of $40.0^{\circ}C$, as the concentration of labeled iodide ion solution increases 0.001 M to 0.004 M, the percentage of iodide ions exchanged increases from 75.16 % to 78.36 % for Indion GS-300 resins, which was higher than the increases from 49.65 % to 52.36 % compared to that obtained for Indion-860 resins. The overall results indicate that under identical experimental conditions, Indion GS-300 resins show superior performance over Indion-860 resins.

  • Proper reservoir characterization is an integral part of formation evaluation, reserve estimation and planning of field development. Seismic inversion is a widely employed reservoir characterization tool that provides various rock properties of reservoir intervals. This study presents results of the inversion studies including Geostatistical Inversion carried out on the gas fields, offshore Myanmar. Higher resolution and multiple models can be produced by Geostatistical Inversion using input data such as pre-stack seismic data, well logs, petrophysical relationships and geological inferences for example reservoir shape and lateral extent. Detailed reservoir characterization was required for the development plan of gas fields, and the Geostatistical Inversion studies served as a basis for integrated geological modeling and development well planning.
