  • Single angle or channel with thin-walled open section can be used as compression member for example as web member in truss. In this case the inevitable eccentricity due to fabrication is commonly neglected in structural design. However eccentricity effect should be considered in the member design, especially in case of compression member. The critical loads of compression members that buckle by twisting or by a combination of bending and twisting are to be determined by solving governing differential equations. In this paper, the investigations are limited to the rolled channels([), equal-leg angles(L), lipped channels(C) and the applied loads are assumed to have some eccentricities.

  • A large dispersion value in optical fiber cable should be maintained to suppress the nonlinear effect induced distortion for the narrow channel spaced DWDM system while small value of dispersion is needed for high bit rate transmission. To meet these two requirement simultaneously, dispersion distribution control method during the cabling process was exploited. And dispersion distribution cable was fabricated by the way of designing alternation sections in single cable piece with standard single mode fiber(SSMF) and newly developed negative dispersion fiber(NDF). It is shown that the discretely dispersion varying cable along the axis keep the same average dispersion value of an entire cable length as that of nonzero dispersion shifted fiber(NZDSF) with 3.6 ps/km/nm while the local dispersion is around 17 ps/km/nm of absolute value. Moreover, the developed cable had good optical and mechanical properties and the feasibility of this cable for practical use was confirmed.

  • Piston cores retrieved from the western Ulleung Basin, East Sea were analyzed to examine the potential for hydrocarbon generation and to determine the hydrocarbon indicators. 2D multi-channel reflection seismic and Chirp data were also investigated for mapping and characterizing the geophysical hydrocarbon indicators such as BSR (bottom simulating reflector), blank zone, pock-mark etc. High organic carbon contents and sedimentation rates that suggest good condition for hydrocarbon generation. High pressure and low temperature condition, and high residual hydrocarbon concentrations are favor the formation of natural gas hydrate. In the piston cores, cracks generally oriented to bedding may indicate the gas expansion. The seismic data show several BSRs that are associated with natural gas hydrates and underlying free gas. A number of vertical to sub-vertical blank zones were well identified in the seismic sections. They often show the seismic pull-up structures, probably indicating the presence of high velocity hydrates. Numerous pockmarks were also observed in the Chirp profiles. They may indicate the presence of free gas below the hydrate stability zone as well.

  • The mechanical design procedure is studied for the PCHE(printed circuit heat exchanger) with electrochemical etched flow channels. The effective heat transfer plates of PCHE are assembled by diffusion bonding to make a module. PCHE is widely used for industrial applications due to its compactness, cost efficiency, and serviceability at high pressure and/or temperature conditions. The limitations and technical barriers of PCHE are investigated for application to nuclear components. Rules for design and fabrication of PCHE are specified in ASME Section VIII but not in ASME Section III of nuclear components. Therefore, the calculation procedure of key dimensions of PCHE is defined based on ASME section VIII. The effective heat transfer region of PCHE is defined by several key dimensions such as the flow channel radius, edge width, wall thickness, and ridge width. The mechanical design procedure of key dimensions was incorporated into a program for easy use in the PCHE design. The effect of assumptions used in the key dimension calculation on stress values is numerically investigated. A comparative analysis is done by comparing finite element analysis results for the semi-circular flow channels with the formula based sizing calculation assuming rectangular cross sections.

  • This work aims to study the effect of stiffener ties in the behavior of intermediate length open section Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) Columns under axial compression. A comparative study on the behaviour and strength of Cold Formed Steel Columns by changing the direction of projection of lips (i.e., inwards or outwards) are also done. In this work two types of sections were considered Type-I section with lip projecting outwards (hat) and Type-II section with lip projecting inwards (channel). The length of the columns is predicted by performing elastic buckling analysis using CUFSM software. The theoretical analysis is performed using DSM - S100;2007, AS/NZ: 4600-2005 and IS: 801-1975. The compression tests are carried out in a 400 kN loading frame with hinged-hinged end condition. The non-linear numerical analysis is performed using Finite Element software ANSYS 12.0 to simulate the experimental results. Extensive parametric study is carried out by varying the width and spacing of the stiffener ties. The results are compared; the effects of stiffener ties on behaviour and load carrying capacity on both types of columns are discussed.

  • This study investigates the spatial structure of the total cloud liquid water content Q fields over the Northwest Pacific Ocean during winter monsoon. The distributions of Q have been estimated from the brightness temperatures of the ocean - atmosphere system $T_B(f)$, where f is frequency, measured by AQUA AMSR-E in January -March 2003. Marine strati (St) and stratocumuli (Sc) are typical for winter monsoon season. They were analysed using mainly high-frequency channel at f = 36.5 GHz, vertical polarisation. $T_B$ data were accompanied by the data on near surface wind speed, air temperature and humidity from the nearest meteorological stations. Tow one-dimensional spectra were computed for downwind and crosswind sections of Q fields. The AMSR-E antenna field of view (14-8 km) and the cloud field sizes (100-1000 km) restricted the spatial scales. The results of case study Jan 31 2003 are presented. Scale-invariant spectrum is typical. In the cases of extended St levels a spectral slope equals about -1.7, conforming to classical -5/3 of turbulence theory. For Sc cases the absolute magnitude of spectral slope is rather higher, as a rule. The value is about -2. In the case when cloud streets are presented, a strait line form of spectrum is less reliable with a slope being rather lower (about -1.4).

  • The dominant effect of the interaction between vortices, generated by the addition of the Leading Edge Extension(LEX) in front of the wing, was well observed in this experiment. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vertex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections(30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) of chord length. Distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors and vortices over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. High-speed CCD camera which made it possible to acquire serial images is able to get the detailed information about the flow characteristics occurred on the delta wing. Especially quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarity the significance of the LEX existence.

  • The distinguishing features of flows at high angles of attacks are caused by the generation of free shear layers at sharp leading edges, by separation of the viscous layers from the surfaces of wings and bodies and by the flow in the wakes of the wings and bodies. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vortex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections(30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) of chord length. Distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors and vorticities over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. Highly swept leading edge extension(LEX) applied to delta wings has greatly improved the subsonic maneuverability of contemporary fighters. High-speed CCD camera which made it possible to acquire serial images is able to get the detailed information about the flow characteristics occurred on the delta wing. Sideslip effect in case of the LEX was also studied for two sideslip(yaw) angles($5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$) at one angle of attack(20). Distribution of time-averaged velocity vectors and vorticity over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. Quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarify the significance of the LEX existence. Animation presentation in velocity distribution was also implemented to reveal the effect of LEX with wing vortex interaction.

  • The vacuum preloading method has been used in many countries for ground improvement and land reclamation works. A sand cushion is required as a horizontal drainage channel for conventional vacuum preloading. In terms of the dredged-fill foundation soil, the treatment effect of the conventional vacuum preloading method is poor, particularly in Tianjin, China, where a shortage of sand exists. To solve this problem, straight-line vacuum preloading without sand is widely adopted in engineering practice to improve the foundation soil. Based on the engineering properties of dredged fill in Lingang City, Tianjin, this paper presents field instrumentation in five sections and analyzes the effect of a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) layout and a vacuum pumping method on the soft soil ground treatment. Through the arrangement of pore water pressure gauges, settlement marks and vane shear tests, the settlement, pore water pressure and subsoil bearing capacity are analyzed to evaluate the effect of the ground treatment. This study demonstrates that straight-line vacuum preloading without sand can be suitable for areas with a high water content. Furthermore, the consolidation settlement and consolidation degree system is developed based on the grey model to predict the consolidation settlement and consolidation degree under vacuum preloading; the validity of the system is also verified.
