  • A multiple production .epsilon. equation model was developed in the low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model with the aids of DNS data. We derived the model theoretically and avoided the use of empirical correlations as much as possible in order for the model to have generality in the prediction of complex turbulent flow. Unavoidable model constants were, however, optimized with the aids of DNS data. All the production and dissipation models in the $\varepsilon$ equation were modified with damping functions to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. A new $f_{\mu}$ function, turbulent diffusion and pressure diffusion model for the k and .epsilon. equations were also proposed to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. By, computational investigation on the plane channel flows, we found that the multiple production model for .epsilon. equation could improve the near wall turbulence behavior compared with the standard production model without the complicated empirical modification. Satisfication of the wall limiting conditions for each turbulence model term was found to be most important for the accurate prediction of near wall turbulence behaviors.

  • Analyzed are the the DNBR(Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio) sensitivities to variations in various PWR operating parameters utilizing the Korea Nuclear Unit 1(KNU-1) design and operating data. Studied parameters in the analysis are core power level, system pressure, core inlet flow rate, core inlet temperature, enthalpy rise hot channel factor, and axial power peaking factor and axial offset. The calculations are performed using the steady state and transient thermal-hydraulics computer program, COBRA-IV-K, which is the revised version of COBRA-IV-i that has been adapted, partially modified and verified at KAERI. A reference case is established based on the design and operating condition of the KNU-1 reactor core, and this provides a basis for the subsequent sensitivity analysis. From the calculation results it is concluded that the most sensitive parameter in the DNBR thermal design is the coolant core inlet temperature while the axial power peaking factor is the least sensitive.

  • A two-dimensional immiscible water meniscus deformation phenomena on a moving tip in a channel has been investigated by using lattice Boltzmann method involving two-phase model. We studied the behavior of a water meniscus between the tip and a solid surface. The contact angles of the tip and a solid surface considered are in the range from $10^{\circ}$ to $170^{\circ}$. The velocity of the tip used in the study are 0.01, 0.001, and 0.0001. The shapes of tip considered are rectangular and circular. The behavior of water confined between the tip and a solid surface depends on the contact angles of the tip and a solid surface, and the tip velocity. When the tip is moving, we can observe the various behaviors of shear deformation of a water meniscus. As time goes on, the behavior of a water meniscus can be classified into three different patterns which are separated from the tip or adhered to the tip or sticked to a solid surface according to the contact angles and the tip velocity.

  • The random and heterogeneous pore structure is a significant factor that dominates physical and mechanical behaviors of soils such as fluid flow and geomechanical responses driven by loading. The characterization method using non-destructive testing such as micro X-ray CT technique which has a high resolution with micrometer unit allows to observe internal structure of soils. However, the application has been limited to qualitatively observe 2D and 3D CT images and to obtain the void ratio at macro-scale although the CT images contain enormous information of materials of interests. In this study, we constructed the 3D particle and pore structures based on sequentially taken 2D images of glass beads and quantitatively defined complex pore structure with void cell and void channel. This approach was enabled by implementing image processing techniques that include coordinate transformation, binarization, Delaunay Triangulation, and Euclidean Distance Transform. It was confirmed that the suggested algorithm allows to quantitatively evaluate the distribution of void cells and their connectivity of heterogeneous pore structures for glass beads.

  • Due to the high digital technology, various devices such as TV, PC, smartphone, and pad computer are connected to each other using internet and under the circumstance internet services of which the running platforms are mainly PC become "N-screenlized" by extending their service platform to non-PC devices. As a digital TV has outstanding features of being the most influential device in the living room and having the wide spectrum of users, several internet services has been ported on the digital TV platform (in the form of data services) in order to enhance their brand powers. Most of the services, however, failed to get a satisfactory results as the data services are defeated by the broadcasting contents in the competition for the viewer's interests. In the paper, the design guidelines that make data services not to compete with the broadcasting contents are proposed and a prototype of a data service that accommodates the guidelines is introduced. The prototype, called "TV ideal-type world-cup", does not disturb a viewer's watching broadcast contents and channel-changing behavior while it is running and its service flow is designed for a viewer to achieve the goal of service in a few minutes so that the viewer can enjoy the service in a commercial period.

  • This work investigates the influence of water compressibility on pressure pulsations induced by rotor-stator interaction (RSI) in hydraulic machinery, using the commercial CFD solver ANSYS-CFX. A pipe flow example with harmonic velocity excitation at the inlet plane is simulated using different grid densities and time step sizes. Results are compared with a validated code for hydraulic networks (SIMSEN). Subsequently, the solution procedure is applied to a simplified 2.5-dimensional pump-turbine configuration in prototype with different speeds of sound as well as in model scale with an adapted speed of sound. Pressure fluctuations are compared with numerical and experimental data based on prototype scale. The good agreement indicates that the scaling of acoustic effects with an adapted speed of sound works well. With respect to pressure fluctuation amplitudes along the centerline of runner channels, incompressible solutions exhibit a linear decrease while compressible solutions exhibit sinusoidal distributions with maximum values at half the channel length, coinciding with analytical solutions of one-dimensional acoustics. Furthermore, in compressible simulation the amplification of pressure fluctuations is observed from the inlet of stay vane channels to the spiral case wall. Finally, the procedure is applied to a three-dimensional pump configuration in model scale with adapted speed of sound. Normalized Pressure fluctuations are compared with results from prototype measurements. Compared to incompressible computations, compressible simulations provide similar pressure fluctuations in vaneless space, but pressure fluctuations in spiral case and penstock may be much higher.

  • This paper proposes an efficient two-dimensional simulation model for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on the electrochemical effectiveness model. The effectiveness model is known to accurately predict the current generation performance of SOFC electrodes, by considering the complex reaction/transport processes that occur within thin active functional layers near the electrolyte. After validation tests, the two-dimensional simulation model was used to calculate the distribution of current density and oxygen concentration transverse to the flow channel in anode-supported SOFCs, with which the oxygen depletion characteristics were investigated in detail. In addition, simulations were also conducted to determine the minimum number of grids required in the transverse direction to efficiently obtain accurate results.

  • 3GPP evolved packet system (EPS) is an all-IP based system that supports various access networks such LTE, HSPA/HSPA+, and non-3GPP networks. Recently, the support of IP flows with packet level QoS profiles was added to the requirements of the EPS. This paper proposes an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme that supports the QoS of such IP flows in the 3G LTE access network of the EPS. Defining the retransmission as a critical factor for QoS, the proposed scheme applies different maximum packet error probability $P_{max}$ to each packet when selecting the AMC transmission mode. In determining $P_{max}$, the QoS constraints and NACK-to-ACK error as well as channel condition are considered, balancing two objectives: the satisfaction of the QoS and the maximization of spectral efficiency. The simulation results show that it is able to reduce both delay violation and status report by 10%, while improving the throughput 10% in comparison with an existing scheme.

  • We have fabricated the source-drain electrodes for OTFTs by screen printing method and manufactured Ag pastes as conductive paste. To obtain excellent conductivity and screen-printability of Ag pastes, the dispersion characteristics of Ag pastes prepared from two types of acryl resins with different molecular structures and Ag powder treated with caprylic acid, triethanol amine and dodecane thiol as surfactant respectively were investigated. The Ag pastes containing Ag powder treated with dodecane thiol having thiol as anchor group or AA4123 with carboxyl group(COOH) of hydrophilic group as binder resin exhibited excellent dispersity. But, Ag pastes(CA-41, TA-41, DT-41) prepared from AA4123 fabricated the insulating layer since the strong interaction between surface of Ag powder and carboxyl group(COOH) of AA4123 interfered with the formation of conduction path among Ag powders. The viscosity behavior of Ag pastes exhibited shear-thinning flow in the high shear rate range and the pastes with bad dispersion characteristic demonstrated higher shear-thinning index than those with good dispersity due to the weak flocculated network structure. The output curve of OTFT device with a channel length of 107 ${\mu}m$ using screen-printed S-D electrodes from DT-30 showed good saturation behavior and no significant contact resistance. And this device exhibited a saturation mobility of $4.0{\times}10^{-3}$ $cm^2/Vs$, on/off current ratio of about $10^5$ and a threshold voltage of about 0.7 V.
