Study on Heat Transfer Characteristics of Internal Heat Exchanger for $CO_2$ Heat Pump under Heating Operating Condition (난방운전 조건하에서 $CO_2$ 열펌프용 내부 열교환기의 열전달 특성에 대한 연구)

  • In order to study the heat transfer, effectiveness and pressure drop of an internal heat exchanger (IHX) for $CO_2$, heat pump under heating condition, the experiment and numerical analysis were performed. Four kinds of IHXs were used. The section-by-section method and Hardy-Cross method were used for the numerical analysis. The effects of IHX on the flow rate of refrigerant, the IHX length, the operating condition of a gas-cooler and an evaporator and the type of IHXs were investigated. With increasing the flow rate, the heat transfer rate increased about 25%. The heat transfer of the micro-channel tube was larger about 100% than that of the coaxial tube. With increasing the IHX length, the heat transfer rate decreased. The low-side pressure drop was larger compared with that of the high-side. And the pressure drop of the microchannel tube was larger about 100% than that of the coaxial tube. With increasing the high-side temperature and decreasing the low-side temperature, the heat transfer rate increased about 3%. From this study, we can see that new correlation on $CO_2$ heat transfer characteristics and tube type is necessary.

  • The water quality of the Gulpo Stream flowing through Incheon, Bucheon, Seoul, and Kimpo is getting worse due to a slow flow rate and bank constructions by stream channelization as well as an inflow of pollutants from living-sewages and factory-sewages. Besides, a dry stream phenomenon caused by a lack of maintenance water upstream makes a self-purification system worse, and the water quality of the Gulpo Stream is currently at its lowest level. The accumulated sludge of the streambed is mostly formed by the deposition of particle pollutants due to the slow flow rate and an artificially straightened stream channel. This accumulated sludge adsorbs a great quantity of organic materials and heavy metals. Because of the internal contamination possibility by a re-gushing, even after the pollution source is removed, it can cause future water pollution. Without a total examination as previously recommended, it is considered difficult to accomplish practical efficiency. In conclusion, the management of periodic sediment management such as dredging would be necessary in the Gulpo Stream because sediment could be an internal pollution source of stream water under anaerobic conditions.

  • An hydraulic experiment was carried out in an open channel flume in order to improve the technique of designing shape of the sluice used for tidal power generation, which greatly affects the economical efficiency of the construction of a tidal power plant. To predict the influence of change in the major design parameters relating to the sluice shape on the water discharge capability of the sluice, it was necessary to perform a precise experiment that is discriminated to previous feasibility studies or design projects. For this purpose, by installing various flow straighteners and rectifying structures inside the water supply system and the rectifying tank, the flow in the flume was stabilized as tranquil as possible. In addition, the measuring instruments and the location of installing them were carefully determined so as to minimize the errors intervened during the measurement of water discharge and water level. The method of estimating head difference between upstream and downstream of the sluice was also developed by taking account of the head loss due to the friction at the bottom and side walls in the flume.

Experimental Study of Collapse Delay Effect of Riprap on Dam Slope (사력댐 사석 보호공의 붕괴 지연 효과에 대한 실험 연구)

  • The 99.1% of small dam and most of the levees in Korea are soil dam which can be constructed with lower cost and less effort compared with ones made of concrete. However, they are so vulnerable to overflow. Sudden collapses of these strucrues lead to increase flow rate rapidly, which may cause catastrophic problems in downstream regions. In this study, the experimental study on the collapse delay effect of riprap that was laid on slope of soil levee was carried out. A prismatic rectangular open channel was used and three different sizes of the riprap were installed on slope of a scaled earth dam. A new formula for the collapse time of the levee with the installation of riprap was presented, using the previous researches and the dimensional analysis. In this process, an unsteady flow condition was considered to derive the deviation time of the riprap. And additional experiments were conducted to understand the effect of reinforcement of riprap, and it was found that the reinforcement of riprap was more effective than twice sizing of intial riprap. If the collapse time is delayed, EAP (Emergency Action Plan) and forecasting can greatly reduce the degree of flood damage. Also, it will be meaningful that the results of this study are used for river design.

A study on the relationship between Schmidt Hammer's 'R' and bedrock microforms (기반암 하상 미지형과 슈미트 해머 반발 값과의 관계에 대한 연구)

  • Physical strength of the rock is the most important factor of resistance to erosion and has been measured through various way. Bedrock microforms, like potholes and grooves, are the forms sculpted by the erosional processes of flow and the location and morphology are strongly affected by the differential erosion. It also assumed that the physical strength of the rock controls the erosion rate and mode of erosion. The schmidt hammer has been used to measure the rock strength in the field for the geomorphological research. To find the relationship between the rock strength and microforms, Schmidt hammer's R(rebound) were measured in the Baeksuktan, middle reach of Gilancheon, Cheongsong, Gyungsangbuk do. The overall values of rebound of the local sandstone showed over 65 in most cases, so it can be regarded as 'very strong'. It is found that the rebound values of the rock surface decreased towards current water level. It also, however, found that there was no systematic differences in rebound values among the topographically high and lows in the bedrock surface. There was no statistically significant difference in rebound values of the area with well developed microforms and others. The values of R from the exposed faces and inside of the microforms are similar. In the case of conglomerate, the part with the gravel showed higher values that the parts with sands. The rebound values are decreased near of(<1cm) the geological discontinuities(including joint and faults), so this line of weakness could be the point of initiation of active erosion to form microforms. However there is large variations in rebound values within this part. It also should be mentioned that topological relation between the strike of the geologic discontinuities and flow direction looks control the mode of erosional processes.

Assessment of the Effect of Geographic Factors and Rainfall on Erosion and Deposition (지형학적 인자 및 강우량에 따른 침식 및 퇴적의 영향 평가)

  • This study aims to demonstrate the relationship between various factors and soil erosion or deposition, simulated from distributed rainfall-sediment-runoff model applications. We selected area, overland flow length, local slope as catchment representative characteristics among many important geographic factors and also used the grid-based accumulated rainfall as a representative hydro-climatic factor to assess the effect of these two different types of factors on erosion and deposition. The study catchment was divided based on the Strahler's stream order method for analysis of the relationship between area and erosion or deposition. Both erosion and deposition increased linearly as the catchment area became larger. Erosion occurred widely throughout the catchment, whereas deposition was observed at the grid-cells near the channel network with short overland flow lengths and mild slopes. In addition, the relationship results between grid-based accumulated rainfall and soil erosion or deposition showed that erosion increased gradually as rainfall amount increased, whereas deposition responded irregularly to variations in rainfall. Within the context of these results, it can be concluded that deposition is closely related with the geographic factors used in this study while erosion is significantly affected by rainfall.

Application of 3D point cloud modeling for performance analysis of reinforced levee with biopolymer (3차원 포인트 클라우드 모델링 기법을 활용한 바이오폴리머 기반 제방 보강공법의 성능 평가)

  • In this study, a large-scale levee breach experiment from lateral overflow was conducted to verify the effect of the new reinforcement method applied to the levee's surface. The new method could prevent levee failure and minimize damage caused by overflow in rivers. The levee was designed at the height of 2.5 m, a length of 12 m, and a slope of 1:2. A new material mixed with biopolymer powder, water, weathered granite, and loess in an appropriate ratio was sprayed on the levee body's surface at a thickness of about 5 cm, and vegetation recruitment was also monitored. At the Andong River Experiment Center, a flow (4 ㎥/s) was introduced from the upstream of the A3 channel to induce the lateral overflow. The change of lateral overflow was measured using an acoustic doppler current profiler in the upstream and downstream. Additionally, cameras and drones were used to analyze the process of the levee breach. Also, a new method using 3D point cloud for calculating the surface loss rate of the levee over time was suggested to evaluate the performance of the levee reinforcement method. It was compared to existing method based on image analysis and the result was reasonable. The proposed 3D point cloud methodology could be a solution for evaluating the performance of levee reinforcement methods.

Current Structure and Variability in Gwangyang Bay in Spring 2006 (2006년 봄철 광양만 해류의 구조와 변동)

  • Two monitoring buoys equipped with ADCP were deployed at the deepest positions along the trough of the central Gwangyang Bay in spring 2006 in order to study the circulation in the bay. Northward velocity is commonly dominant at both stations located in the eastern part of the channel, which supports the cyclonic circulation accompanied by the southward flow in the western part. The southern station has a distinct two-layer structure with current reversal at 14 m depth and increasing northward velocity in the lower layer to 36 m depth close to the bottom. At the northern station the northward flow becomes accelerated due to the decrease in the cross-sectional area and this northward current is dominant even in the upper layer. In the modal structure from the EOF analysis, the first mode has 74% of total variance at the northern station whereas it is 67% but the baroclinic portion increases at the southern station. The typical northward velocity is about 10 cm/s which is associated with the cyclonic circulation. Subtidal variability due to the local wind effect is negligible, but the nonlocal response associated with offshore Ekman flux by the zonal wind is found during strong wind events.

A Study on Performance Evaluation based on Packet Dropping in ATM Network . New Scheme Proposal

  • Recently, the growth of applications and services over high-speed Internet increases, ATM networks as wide area back-bone has been a major solution. As the conventional TCP/IP suite is still the standard protocol used to support upper application on current. Internet, the issues regarding whether TCP/IP will operate efficiently on top of an ATM infrastructure and how to control its QoS still remain for studies. TCP uses a window-based protocol for flow control in the transport layer. When TCP uses the UBR service in ATM layer, the control method is only buffer management. If a cell is discarded in ATM layer, one whole packet of TCP will be lost; this fact occur the most TCP performance degradation. Several dropping strategies, such as Tail Drop, EPD, PPD, SPD, FBA, have been proposed to improve the TCP performance over ATM. In this paper, to improve the TCP performance, we propose a packet dropping scheme that is based on comparison with EPD, SPD and FBA. Our proposed scheme is applied to schemes discussed in the previous technology. Our proposed scheme does not need to know each connection's mean packet size. When the buffer exceeds the given threshold, it is based on comparison between the number of dropped packet and the approved packet. Our results are reported and discussed for comparing these discarding schemes under similar conditions. Although the number of virtual channel (VC) is increased, the simulation results showed that the proposed scheme can allocate more fairly each VC than other scheme.

Road Drainage Facility Design Methods apply on the Hydraulic and Hydrologic Analysis (수리·수문기술을 적용한 도로 배수시설 설계 기법)

  • Due to the calculation difficulty on the hydraulic and hydrologic analysis for road drainage facilities design, these analysis techniques are not applicable. This study's result are development of minutely rainfall-intensity equation suitable for road drainage area, verification of rainfall-runoff model joining kinematic wave theory for road drainage area, computational model based GUI for road surface drainage facilities spacing and culvert's size decision and various road drainage channel design. Applicable test on the developed model is proceed, result that in case of road surface dranage facilities spacing is narrower 6~65% than present spacing calculation method, in other case of road cross dranage facilities size is bigger 6~140% than present size decision method.
