In this paper, we consider designing a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) overlay system for fixed MIMO wireless link, where a frequency flat narrowband channel is shared by multiple transmitter and receiver pairs. Assuming the perfect knowledge of the second-order statistics of the received legacy signals and the composite channels from the overlay transmitter to the legacy receivers, the jointly optimal linear precoder and decoder matrices of the MIMO overlay system is derived to minimize the total mean squared error (MSE) of the data symbol vector, subject to total average transmission power and zero interference induced to legacy MIMO systems already existing in the frequency band of interest. Furthermore, the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the optimal solution is also derived.

Forward error correction (FEC) coding schemes using iterative soft decision detection (SDD) information are mandatory in most of the next generation wireless communication system, in order to combat inevitable channel imparirnents. At the same time, space-time block coding (STBC) schemes are used for the diversity gain. Therefore, SDD information has to be fed into FEC decoder. In this paper, we propose efficient SDD methods for turbo-coded STBC system using high order modulation such as QAM. We present simulation results of various SDD schemes for turbo-coded STBC systems, and show that the proposed methods can provide almost approximating performance to maximum likelihood detection with much less computational load.
In this paper, we present a design of modem and vocoder digital signal processor (DSP) chips for CDMA mobile station. The modem chip integrates CDMA reverse link modulator, CDMA forward link demodulator and Viterbi decoder. This chip contains 89,000 gates and 29 kbit RAMs, and the chip size is $10 mm{\times}10.1 mm$ which is fabricated using a $0.8{\mu}m$ 2 metal CMOs technology. To carry out the system-level simulation, models of the base station modulator, the fading channel, the automatic gain control loop, and the microcontroller were developed and interfaced with a gate-level description of the modem application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The Modem chip is now successfully working in the real CDMA mobile station on its first fab-out. A new DSP architecture was designed to implement the Qualcomm code exited linear prediction (QCELP) vocoder algorithm in an efficient way. The 16 bit vocoder DSP chip has an architecture which supports direct and immediate addressing modes in one instruction cycle, combined with a RISC-type instruction set. This turns out to be effective for the implementation of vocoder algorithm in terms of performance and power consumption. The implementation of QCELP algorithm in our DSP requires only 28 million instruction per second (MIPS) of computation and 290 mW of power consumption. The DSP chip contains 32,000 gates, 32K ($2k{\times}16\;bit$) RAM, and 240k ($10k{\times}24\;bit$) ROM. The die size is $8.7\;mm{\times}8.3\;mm$ and chip is fabricated using $0.8\;{\mu}m$ CMOS technology.
Digital fountain codes are record-breaking codes for erasure channels. They have many potential applications in both wired and wireless communications. Most existing digital fountain codes operate over binary fields using an iterative belief-propagation (BP) decoding algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new iterative decoding algorithm for both binary and nonbinary fields. The basic form of our proposed algorithm considers both degree-1 and degree-2 check nodes (instead of only degree-1 check nodes as in the original BP decoding scheme), and has linear complexity. Extensive simulation demonstrates that it outperforms the original BP decoding scheme, especially for a small number of source packets. The enhanced form of the proposed algorithm combines the basic form of the algorithm and a guess-based algorithm to further improve the decoding performance. Simulation results demonstrate that it can provide better decoding performance than the guess-based algorithm with fewer guesses, and can achieve decoding performance close to that of the maximum likelihood decoder at a much lower decoding complexity. Last, we show that our nonbinary scheme has the potential to outperform the binary scheme when choosing suitable degree distributions, and furthermore it is insensitive to the size of the Galois field.

In this paper, we propose a low complexity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection algorithm with adaptive interference mitigation in downlink multiuser MIMO (DL MU-MIMO) systems with quantization error of the channel state information (CSI) feedback. In DL MU-MIMO systems using the imperfect precoding matrix caused by quantization error of the CSI feedback, the station receives the desired signal as well as the residual interference signal. Therefore, a complexMIMO detection algorithm with interference mitigation is required for mitigating the residual interference. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a MIMO detection algorithm with adaptive interference mitigation. The proposed algorithm adaptively mitigates the residual interference by using the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) error criterion (MEC). We derive a theoretical MEC by using the MLD error condition and a practical MEC by approximating the theoretical MEC. In conclusion, the proposed algorithm adaptively performs interference mitigation when satisfying the practical MEC. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the computational complexity and has the same performance, compared to the generalized sphere decoder, which always performs interference mitigation.

The transmission of multimedia information over error-prone channels such as wireless networks has become an important area of research. In this paper, we propose two Error Concealment(EC) schemes for wireless transmission of JPEG2000 image. The Multiple Representation(MR) is employed as the preprocessing in our schemes, whereas the main error concealing operation is applied in wavelet domain at receiver side. The compressed code-stream of several subsampled versions of original image is transmitted over a single channel with random bit errors. In the decoder side, the correctly reconstructed wavelet coefficients are utilized to recover the corrupted coefficients in other sub-images. The recovery is carried out by proposed basic(MREC-BS) or enhanced(MREC-ES) methods, both of which can be simply implemented. Moreover, there is no iterative processing during error concealing, which results a big time saving. Also, the simulation results confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed schemes.

In this paper, we suggest more precise performance analysis method of turbo interleavers based on two criteria; performance bounds like Union Bound and weight frequency of codewords. In order to present our new method, we employ block pseudo random, and so-called prime interleavers in compliance of 3GPP standard, respectively, We also applied this method to S-random interleavers that have different window size, S. 3GPP complied turbo encoder, decoder, and AWGN channel are implemented by using MATLAB for our performance analysis. According to our analysis, both criteria should be taken into account coincidently to predict the performance of newly designed interleavers.

Conventional rate control (RC) schemes for H.264 video coding usually regulate output bit rate to match channel bandwidth by adjusting quantization parameter (QP) at fixed full frame rate, and the passive frame skipping to avoid buffer overflow usually occurs when scene changes or high motions exist in video sequences especially at low bit rate, which degrades spatial-temporal quality and causes jerky effect. In this paper, an active content adaptive frame skipping scheme is proposed instead of passive methods, which skips subjectively trivial frames by structural similarity (SSIM) measurement between the original frame and the interpolated frame via motion vector (MV) copy scheme. The saved bits from skipped frames are allocated to coded key ones to enhance their spatial quality, and the skipped frames are well recovered based on MV copy scheme from adjacent key ones at the decoder side to maintain constant frame rate. Experimental results show that the proposed active SSIM-based frameskip scheme acquires better and more consistent spatial-temporal quality both in objective (PSNR) and subjective (SSIM) sense with low complexity compared to classic fixed frame rate control method JVT-G012 and prior objective metric based frameskip method.
In this paper, a Software Defined Radio (SDR) architecture was designed and implemented for rapid prototyping of GNSS receiver. The proposed SDR can receive various GNSS and direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signals without software modification by expanded input parameters containing information of the desired signal. Input parameters include code information, center frequency, message format, etc. To receive various signal by parameter controlling, a correlator, a data bit extractor and a receiver channel were designed considering the expanded input parameters. In navigation signal processing, pseudorange was measured based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and appropriate navigation message decoder was selected by message format of input parameter so that receiver position can be calculated even if SDR is set up various GNSS combination. To validate the proposed SDR, the software was implemented using C++, CUDA C based on GPU and USRP. Experimentation has confirmed that changing the input parameters allows GPS, GLONASS, and BDS satellite signals to be received. The precision of the position from implemented SDR were measured below 5 m (Circular Error Probability; CEP) for all scenarios. This means that the implemented SDR operated normally. The implemented SDR will be used in a variety of fields by allowing prototyping of various GNSS signal only by changing input parameters.

The aim of this study is to rectify the misclassified image features and enhance the performance of image classification tasks by incorporating a channel- coding technique, widely used in telecommunication. Specifically, the proposed algorithm employs the error - correcting mechanism of convolutional coding combined with the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that are the state - of- the- arts image classifier s. We develop an encoder and a decoder to employ the error - correcting capability of the convolutional coding. In the encoder, the label values of the image data are converted to convolutional codes that are used as target outputs of the CNN, and the network is trained to minimize the Euclidean distance between the target output codes and the actual output codes. In order to correct misclassified features, the outputs of the network are decoded through the trellis structure with Viterbi algorithm before determining the final prediction. This paper demonstrates that the proposed architecture advances the performance of the neural networks compared to the traditional one- hot encoding method.
