  • The primary aim of this paper is to develop an automated welding system capable of adapting to variation in the weld seam center in order to allow higher welding speeds and improved welding quality by using a laser vision sensor. The system is designed to compensate for production problems such as pipe ovality, variation in bevel geometry and track misalignment.

  • In this study, ventilation flow rate and pressure rise through a tunnel are simulated numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for various conditions such as roughness height of the surface of tunnel, swirl angle and hub/tip ratio of jet fan, and entrance and exit effects. By using a modified wall function, friction factor can be predicted with respect to the Moody chart within 10% of error for the circular pipe flow and 15% for the present tunnel. For more accurate design, the effect of the swirl angle and hub/tip ratio of jet fan, which is not included in the theoretical equation of pressure rise by jet fan needs to be considered.

  • An experimental investigation has been performed on the steady flow in exhaust system. When individual flow coming from exhaust manifold entered UCC, the inlet conditions at entry to the diffuser in UCC were affected by the upstream pipe and manifold works. But those effects of the inlet condition on flow through monolith are negligible because the flows are concentrated on the center of monolith regardless of inlet flow distribution. To improve the flow distribution, we installed the cone type circular ring in diffuser of UCC. This led to increasement of flow uniformity, but there was minor increment of pressure drop.

  • Based on the one-dimensional stability analysis, the self-excited oscillation in hydraulic power generating systems was studied by a simple experiment and numerical simulation. It was shown that a cavity in a conical diffuser can cause surge. With the diffuser, a high amplitude and low frequency oscillation occurs at low cavitation number. This oscillation was not observed with the straight pipe. It was confirmed that the diffuser effect of the draft tube can be the cause of the full load surge in hydraulic power system. Numerical results were also analyzed to check the validity of the one-dimensional stability analysis.

  • Time passages could deteriorate the flow ability and hold the flow in the water distribution facilities because of their erosion and breakdown. It is necessary that the study to determine the optimal change time and the improvement plan for the continuous management using optimization methods or decision support systems. But, the present study tendency only aware the changes of hydraulic characteristics without industrial management plans. This study shows the pipe replacement program in these two concepts and the elementary process to apply it to Daejeon city.

  • Flow uniformity in aftertreatment system is an important factor in determining uniform catalytic reaction and filtration. In this study, variety types of DOC-DPF system design were analyzed to increase flow uniformity. For this analysis, ANSYS Fluent was used with porous media setup for DOC and DPF. Turbulent flow was modeled by standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model excepting porous media. Uniformity index was utilized to evaluate the flow uniformity quantitatively. Reference design showed low velocity region because two large vortex were generated before baffle. When radius of DOC-DPF system was increased, exhaust pressure acting on the inlet decreases and velocity distribution was shifted to one side. When inlet pipe was set to axial center of DOC-DPF system velocity distribution was symmetric. However, flow was not dissipated until the front end of DOC and showed higher uniformity index. When the volume of DOC was reduced while fixed volume of entire DOC-DPF system and baffle plate is located downstream of the DOC-DPF system, there was improvement in uniformity index.

  • In a ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system, a vertical ground heat exchanger (GHE) is widely accepted due to a higher thermal performance. In the vertical GHE, grout (also called grouting material) plays an important role in the heat transfer performance and the initial installation cost of the GHE. Bentonite-based grout has been used in practice because of its high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. This study evaluated the thermo-physical properties of the bentonite-based grouts through lab-scale measurements. In addition, we conducted performance simulation to analyze the effect of mixed ratio of grouts on the design length and thermal performance of the vertical GHE. The simulation results show that thermally-enhanced grouts improve the heat transfer performance of the vertical GHE and thus reduce the design length of GHE pipe.

  • ln this study, a natural gas pipeline network model was established using STONER. First a map of natural gas pipeline network was drawn on STONER and then the length and diameter of the pipe were inputted. And as the specific gravity of gas flowing in the pipeline which is the value of natural gas was inputted. Finally in order to decide the pipeline variables and gas temperature, through the verification with observed real data, the possible error was minimized. For the verification, the pipeline variables and gas temperature were assumed and the pipeline network analysis was accomplished with real demand data. The square deviation of analysed pressure from observed pressure was calculated and the minimum case was selected for the optimum pipeline variables and gas temperature. Thus a proper natural gas pipeline network model for real network was established.

  • Both domestic and overseas urban drainage systems have been actively researched to solve the problems of urban flash floods and the flood damage that is caused by local downpours. Recent urban planning has been designed to better manage the floods of decentralized rainfall-management systems, and the installation of green infrastructure and low-impact development (LID) facilities at national ministries has been recommended. In this study, we use the EPA SWMM model to construct a decentralized rainfall-management network for each small watershed, and we analyze the effect of the drainage-capacity improvement from the installation of the LID technologies in vulnerable areas that replaces the network-expansion process. In the design of the existing urban piping systems, it is common to increase the pipe size due to the increment of the impervious area, the steep terrain, and the sensitive entrance-ramp junction; however, the installation of green infrastructure and LID facilities will be sufficient for the construction of a safe urban drainage system. The applications of LID facilities and green infrastructure in urban areas can positively affect the recovery of the corresponding water cycles to a healthy standard, and it is expected that further research will occur in the future.
