  • This study compared fin-tube and parallel-flow heat pipes for their sensible heat exchange rate, heat recovery amount, and air-side pressure drop. Tests were done with different refrigerant charging rates of 40-60% vol. and air flow rates of 300-1,400. The sensible heat exchange rate was highest for both types of heat pipes at a working fluid charge of 40% vol. and low flow rate. For the parallel-flow heat pipe, the 60% vol. charge is too high and results in a low sensible heat exchange rate. The reason is that the thicker liquid film of the tube wall deteriorates the heat transfer effect. Hence, the optimal charging rate is 40 to 50% vol. The evaporator heat pipe has a larger air-side pressure drop than the condenser section heat pipe. The reason is considered to be condensation water arising from the evaporator surface. Compared to the fin-tube heat pipe, the parallel-flow heat pipe showed better performance with a working fluid charging rate of 48%, volume of 41%, and an air-side pressure drop about 37%.

  • Recently, small-scale excavation like ground cavity restoration and buried pipe replacement works are being carried out in urban area, in order to improve living convenience. This paper describes experiment results on the ground reinforcement method that can reduce the buried pipe damage, when the differential settlement occurred due to poor compaction of ground below the buried pipe. Plate load tests were conducted to evaluate a reinforcement effect of ground using concrete mat and expansion mat in the ground below the buried pipe. The results showed that the stress reduction ratio by concrete mat and expansion mat according to the surcharge load was about 46%~48% and 39%~42%, respectively. Therefore, the differential settlement of the buried pipe and the ground deformation below the buried pipes were reduced by the reinforcement effect of the concrete mat and expansion mat. This means that it is possible to prevent a buried pipe damage due to underground cavity and ground subsidence, if concrete mat and expansion mat are reinforced in the ground below the buried pipe or on the ground between the buried pipes.

  • Oil and gas fields were left unexploited which deemed too deep and sour. New developing markets are emerging in this part and pipe manufacturers need demanding requirements in the combination of sour service requirements with heavier wall thickness required to cope with increasing water depths. Whilst, the strength and fracture toughness needed to meet the strict requirements In order to deliver the optimum sour properties in the final pipe, attention needs to be paid to each stage throughout the process from steel making. The main key during steel making is strengthening, securing mechanical properties and suppression of center segregation by adding proper chemical elements and controlling water cooling and plate rolling. Additionally in welding, it is required to prevent HAZ softening by high heat input during welding of heavy thick pipes and hydrogen assisted cracking in high strength steels with hard phases. In this paper, we introduce markets of sour resistant linepipe steels and in response to this, have a look in the development trend of sour resistant linepipe steels and its sour characteristics in welded joints.

  • The transmission pipeline industry spends many millions of dollars annually performing inline inspections, excavating sites of possible corrosion, and repairing or replacing damaged sections of pipe. New criteria fur evaluation of the integrity of corroded pipe have been developed in recent years to help in controlling these costs. These new criteria vary widely in their estimates of integrity and the most appropriate criterion fur a given pipeline is net always clear. This paper presents an overview, comparison and evaluation of acceptability criteria for corrosion deflects in pipelines. By full scale burst tests, this paper has assessed the relative accuracy of each of theses criteria in predicting burst pressure. Many of the criteria appear to be excessively conservative and indicate that deflects must be repaired when none is needed, based upon burst test data.

  • This study investigates the structural performance of 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding systems. For the purpose, a standard full scale 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding system considering two frames, two plane trusses, purlins and wooden floor is constructed in the laboratory. A developed load transmission system was placed in these experimental systems to distribute single loads to the center of a specific area in a step-by-step manner using a load jack. After each load increment, the displacements are measured by means of linear variable differential transducers placed in several critical points of the system. The tests are repeated for five different system conditions to determine the structural performance. The means of system conditions is the numbers of the tie bars which are used to connect plane trusses under level. Finite elements models of the 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding systems considering different systems conditions are constituted using SAP2000 software to support the experimental tests and to use the models in future studies. Each of models including load transmission platform is analyzed under a single loading and the displacements are obtained. In addition, to calibrate the numerical models some uncertain parameters such as elasticity modulus of wooden floor and connection rigidity of purlins to plane trusses are assessed experimentally. The results of this work demonstrate that when increasing numbers of tie bars the displacement values are decreased. Also the results obtained from developed numerical models have harmony with those of experimental. In addition, the scaffolding system with two tie bars at the beginning and at the end of the plane truss has the optimum structural performance compared the results obtained for other scaffolding system conditions.

  • Gravity current flow past a subsea pipe above a scour based on computational fluid dynamics. For comparison, gravity current flow over pipe above a smooth bed also calculated, this configuration conventionally employed to consider the scour effect from an ideal approach. Interestingly, there different flow features and hydrodynamic forces between the scour and smooth bed cases. These results indicate that realistic conditionvery important investigatthe scour effect on gravity current flow around subsea pipe.

  • This study was performed to test the combustive properties of the pipe insulation materials which are mainly used in the industries and buildings. Fire characteristic test of pipe insulation film according to the KS F ISO 5660-1 was performed. The experimental materials commonly used in the pipe insulation were used four kinds of films. Two kinds of 4 types of products that have the flame retardant performance and the other two types of them have no flame retardant performance. They were selected for fire characteristic test. The result of finding 25kW/$m^2$ radiation from the ignition was that flame retardant products were 140sec and the other one were 69sec in average of heat release rate(HRR). The result of flame retardant products in the 50kW/$m^2$ was 34sec and the other one were 15sec in average of HRR. However, the HRR of flame retardant products was much higher than the other one. Flame propagation test was conducted according to the KOFEIS 1001. The result of flame retardant products was that flame retardant products had a hold without fire spread after firing them. But the other one were completely fired after firing them. Therefore, I want to recommend that flame retardant products need to be used by the regulation to prevent or decrease a fire spread.

  • In this study, a steel frame that realized the second floor of a structure was fabricated in referring to NFPA 13. In addition, a riser pipe system with groove joints was installed, and a seismic simulation test was performed using static cyclic loading. Cyclic loading tests on the maximum allowable side sway of seismic design standards for buildings in Korea were conducted using actuators to analyze the seismic behavior of the riser pipe system and major piping elements due to the deformation of the steel frame structure or the displacement-dominant behavior caused by the relative displacement between the structural members in the event of a seismic load. Moreover, the deformation angle of the riser pipe system was measured using an image measurement system because it is difficult to measure using the conventional sensors.

  • Although leakage at a low carbon steel pipe made by electrical resistance welding(ERW) was reported due to grooving corrosion, the cause for the corrosion has not yet been cleared. So lots of researches were carried out already about grooving corrosion mechanism of ERW carbon steel pipe but there is seldom study for water hammer happened by fluid phenomenon and corrosion rate by flow velocity. In this study, the corrosion test carried out using the ERW carbon steel pipe by changed the water speed and heat input in a month. The level of dissolved oxygen is maintained 5~5.5mg/l(amount of dissolved oxygen in tap water). The water speed for corrosion test is 1m/s, 2m/s, 3m/s. As the results, grooving corrosion rate is increased cause by water speed in the pipe. In the case of the ERW pipe with more heat input, grooving corrosion rate is decreased. It is therefore that welding heat input should be controlled based on the carbon content of the pipe in order to improve the corrosion reistance of the ERW pipe.
