  • This report proposes a waveguide spatial combiner with high power low loss. The proposed spatial combiner implements high power by combining from the center of each port through a waveguide. In particular, we implement low loss using TE01 mode, which has the lowest transmission track loss among modes of circular waveguide, and miniaturization is achieved by applying a new mode conversion method. IIn addition, it was confirmed that it was suitable for high output by calculating the insulation breakdown voltage of the new mode conversion structure through E-field analysis. The final 8-way waveguide spatial combiner was designed and manufactured, and the insertion loss was less than 0.4dB and the combining efficiency was 97% or more, confirming that the electrical performance was very good compared to the planar combining method.

  • Background and Objectives: Bilateral microphones with contralateral routing of signal (BiCROS) hearing aid is an option for hearing rehabilitation in individuals with asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss (ASNHL). The clinical factors influencing the trial and purchase of BiCROS were investigated. Subjects and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 78 patients with ASNHL who were recommended to use BiCROS and analyzed the demographic and audiological factors influencing the trial and purchase of BiCROS. Results: Among the 78 patients, 52 (66.7%) availed of the free BiCROS trial and 21 (26.9%) purchased BiCROS. The mean pure tone audiometry (PTA) air conduction (AC) threshold of the better- and worse-hearing ears were 44.2±12.8 dB and 90.7±22.5 dB HL, respectively. The decision for trial or purchase of BiCROS was not influenced by age, sex, duration of hearing loss of the worse-hearing ear, or PTA AC threshold or speech discrimination score of both ears. The first and third quartiles of the PTA AC thresholds for the better-hearing ear of BiCROS buyers were 38.75 dB and 53.75 dB HL, respectively. The counterpart values for the worse-hearing ear were 72.50 dB and 118.75 dB HL, respectively. Conclusions: The clinical factors analyzed in this study were found to be irrelevant to the trial and purchase of BiCROS in patients with ASNHL. Nevertheless, the distribution range of the auditory thresholds of the subjects using BiCROS can be a useful basis for the counseling of patients with ASNHL and selection of candidates for BiCROS use.

  • Deep learning algorithms for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) have been extracting the interest of researchers and engineers. These algorithms commonly used loss functions and evaluation indices like the mean square error (MSE) which were not originally designed for SHM problems. An updated loss function which was specifically constructed for deep-learning-based structural damage detection problems has been proposed in this study. By tuning the coefficients of the loss function, the weights for damage localization and quantification can be adapted to the real situation and the deep learning network can avoid unnecessary iterations on damage localization and focus on the damage severity identification. To prove efficiency of the proposed method, structural damage detection using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) was conducted on a truss bridge model. Results showed that the validation curve with the updated loss function converged faster than the traditional MSE. Data augmentation was conducted to improve the anti-noise ability of the proposed method. For reducing the training time, the normalized modal strain energy change (NMSEC) was extracted, and the principal component analysis (PCA) was adopted for dimension reduction. The results showed that the training time was reduced by 90% and the damage identification accuracy could also have a slight increase. Furthermore, the effect of different modes and elements on the training dataset was also analyzed. The proposed method could greatly improve the performance for structural damage detection on both the training time and detection accuracy.

  • Background and Objectives: The antioxidant ebselen will be able to limit or prevent the ototoxicity arising from 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD). Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease is a disorder of lysosomal storage manifested in sphingolipidosis. Recently, it was noted that experimental use of HPβCD could partially resolve the symptoms in both animals and human patients. Despite its desirable effect, HPβCD can induce hearing loss, which is the only major side effect noted to date. Understanding of the pathophysiology of hearing impairment after administration of HPβCD and further development of preventive methods are essential to reduce the ototoxic side effect. The mechanisms of HPβCD-induced ototoxicity remain unknown, but the resulting pathology bears some resemblance to other ototoxic agents, which involves oxidative stress pathways. To indirectly determine the involvement of oxidative stress in HPβCD-induced ototoxicity, we tested the efficacy of an antioxidant reagent, ebselen, on the extent of inner ear side effects caused by HPβCD. Materials and Methods: Ebselen was applied prior to administration of HPβCD in mice. Auditory brainstem response thresholds and otopathology were assessed one week later. Bilateral effects of the drug treatments also were examined. Results: HPβCD-alone resulted in bilateral, severe, and selective loss of outer hair cells from base to apex with an abrupt transition between lesions and intact areas. Ebselen co-treatment did not ameliorate HPβCD-induced hearing loss or alter the resulting histopathology. Conclusions: The results indirectly suggest that cochlear damage by HPβCD is unrelated to reactive oxygen species formation. However, further research into the mechanism(s) of HPβCD otopathology is necessary.

  • Although the fields in which is utilized children's speech recognition is on the rise, the lack of quality data is an obstacle to improving children's speech recognition performance. This paper proposes a new method for improving children's speech recognition performance by additionally using adult speech data. The proposed method is a transformer based domain adversarial training using dynamically weighted loss to effectively address the data imbalance gap between age that grows as the amount of adult training data increases. Specifically, the degree of class imbalance in the mini-batch during training was quantified, and the loss function was defined and used so that the smaller the data, the greater the weight. Experiments validate the utility of proposed domain adversarial training following asymmetry between adults and children training data. Experiments show that the proposed method has higher children's speech recognition performance than traditional domain adversarial training method under all conditions in which asymmetry between age occurs in the training data.

  • This study aimed to implement a deep learning model that can perform quantitative quality control through ACTS software used for quantitative evaluation of ACR phantom in CT quality control and evaluate its usefulness. By changing the scanning conditions, images of three modules of the ACR phantom's slice thickness (ST), low contrast resolution (LC), and high contrast resolution (HC) were obtained and classified as ACTS software. The deep learning model used ResNet18, implementing three models in which ST, HC, and LC were learned with epoch 50 and an integrated model in which three modules were learned with Epoch 10, 30, and 50 at once. The performance of each model was evaluated through Accuracy and Loss. When comparing and evaluating the accuracy and loss function values of the deep learning models by ST, LC, and HC modules, the Accuracy and Loss of the HC model were the best with 100% and 0.0081, and in the integrated model according to the Epoch value, Accuracy and Loss with epoch 50 were the best with 96.29% and 0.1856. This paper showed that quantitative quality control is possible through a deep learning model, and it can be used as a basis and evidence for applying deep learning to the CT quality control.

  • For the improvement of the lock-in frequency of a ring laser gyro, a low-scattering mirror was employed in the laser resonator. A super-polishing technique produced fine mirror substrates of less than 1-A-rms-roughness. The mirror coating using an ionbeam sputtering technique reduced the scattering loss to less than 30 ppm. As a result of the mirror scattering enhancement of the ring laser, the lock-in frequency of the gyro was improved up to about 0.1 deg/sec.

  • Conversion disorder lacks temperamental grounds and is a type of somatoform disorder that includes alteration or loss of physical functions implicated in physical deficit suggestive psychological conflict. There is high incidence of return of conversion disorder and difficulty in producing exact approaches of cure and apparent effects of remedy with symptomatic treatment alone because of its complex clinical symptoms. The approach of Oriental Medicine in treatment of conversion disorder is to apprehend relative symptoms from the syndrome combined with several annexational symptoms centering around sequential symptoms. Thereupon, author made a Ganyanghwapung comprehensive diagnosis was conducted using Oriental Medicine measures by differential diagnostic methods in psychosomatic patients whose cases are diagnosed as conversion disorder. Then, Cheonmagudeungeum Gagambang was prescribed for them and it brought on satisfactory effects from the first or second treatment. There have been many cases reporting the application of Oriental Medicine treatment to conversion disorder to date and outcomes have also been favorable. Results of this study likewise suggest that this Oriental Medicine treatment for conversion disorder is effective.
