  • In this study, a method to reduce temperature rise due to hydration in mass concrete is investigated. It is to use retarder (glucose) for reducing heat of hydration and to use calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) for compensating the retardation effect due to its role as a nucleation seed. For this purpose, the temperature rise of cement paste due to hydration was measured and the effect of using both C-S-H and glucose on setting and 28-day compressive strength of mortar specimens was investigated. According to the experimental results, using C-S-H and glucose caused the reduction in the maximum temperature but accelerated the time to reach the maximum temperature compared to that of retarded cement paste using glucose. In addition, using C-S-H and glucose did not show significant effect on 28-day compressive strength of mortar specimens, indicating that the method shown in this study can be a successful alternative to control maximum temperature rise in mass concrete.

  • In order to prohibit the delay of early stage hydration activator Na2SO4 was added to Fly Ash blended ce-ment and its effects were investigated. Various measurements such as Compressive strength Heat of hy-dration Pore size distribution Hydration products Microstructure were evaluated and the results show that specimens of Fly Ash(50wt%) with 5% Na2SO4 dramatically improved the compressive strength because pozzolanic reaction of Fly Ash and the formation of ettringite make th microstructure denser than OPC and flyash cement paste.

  • Lightweight aggregates has a dry specific gravity of 2.0 or less, which is lower than natural aggregates. Lightweght aggregate is efficient for weight reduction but has low compressive strength. In this study, EIS(electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) was used to confirm the ITZ(Interfacial Transition Zone) between the lightweight aggregate and cement paste according to the coated of blast furnace slag powder. As a result of EIS measurement, the correlation between ITZ characteristics and compressive strength was determined. The phase angle of EIS was different depending on the blast furnace slag powder coated of the lightweight aggregate. The surface-cotead lightweight aggregate was improved and the ITZ was strengthened.

  • This study investigated the use of different amounts of eggshell powder (ESP), namely 5%, 10%, and 15% by weight, as a substitute for Ordinary Portland Cement. The results show that its flowability and 28-day compressive strength. Meanwhile the carbon dioxide emission was though sustainable assessment analyzed It was concluded that ESP replacement level of around 5% provides the best performance to reduces environmental pollution.

  • In this work, as a preliminary experimental works, which focuses on utilizing separated pastes from activated (or radioactive) concrete as solidifying agents for radioactive waste immobilization, were performed. It was found that density of hydrated cement paste, which was lower than that of ordinary portland cement, increased as temperature for heat treatment increased. Highest compressive strength was observed with the specimens that was heat treated at $600^{\circ}C$. However, heat treatment over $700^{\circ}C$ showed higher CaO content that caused higher heat of hydration after in contact with water, lows of workability, and lower strength. Based on experimental results, it is suggested that $600^{\circ}C$ heat treatment is more appropriate for waste cement paste to be used as a solidifying agent.

  • In this study, the fluidity, mechanical properties and microstructure of cement pastes with carbon nanotube (CNT) were experimentally investigated. The 6 types of cement paste mixes with different PCE:CNT and w/b had been manufactured, and several tests including flow, compressive strength, absorption and water porosity were performed on cement pastes with or without CNT.Additionally, microstructural observations such as x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out to examine hydrates formed in cement paste with CNT. As a result, it was found that the performance of cement pastes with CNT was better compared to that of control cement paste (OPC) due to both of hydration acceleration effect and filling effect. Furthermore, the SEM images clearly showed that CNT can bridge cracks formed in cement matrix. Conclusively, it is believed that the CNT, if mixed appropriately, could be an option as nono-materials to improve performance of concrete structures.

  • In this study, physical properties of cement blended with Finex-slag powder(OPC-FS) were investigated by the measurement of flowability, compressive strength, hydration heat, and $Ca(OH)_2$ content. In addition, those properties of the cement blended with blast furnace slag(OPC-BFS) were also measured for comparison. It was found that OPC-FS and OPC-BFS showed similar trend in the rheological properties. In the blended cement pastes with the $4,000\;cm^2/g$ Blaine value the flowability of OPCFS was better than that of OPC-BFS. The initial 3 day mortar compressive strength and the hydration heat of paste of OPC-FS was a bit higher, compared with OPC-BFS. Accordingly $Ca(OH)_2$ produced in the cement hydration was decreased very rapidly.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the flowability and the compressive strength of concrete after the improving of grain shape of the coarse aggregate and fine aggregate fineness modulus. According to the experimental results, the coarse aggregate after improvement of grain shape it lead to be down by 6% fine aggregate ratio, from 47% to 41%. The 0.5% increase of fine aggregate fineness modulus lead to 3% increase of concrete slump, and 1% reduction of concrete air content. While compressive strength on fine aggregate fineness modulus, it was increased until fineness modulus 3.0, but after it reached by 3.5 it was decreased. The compressive strength of the coarse aggregate after improving the grain shape was decreased by 6% due to loss of the adhesion of cement paste.

  • This study investigated the use of different amounts of BFS and POFA. In all mixture systems, 60% cement was replaced with POFA and BFS as a substitute for Ordinary Portland Cement. The results show that with the addition of POFA and BFS, although the early compressive strength will be reduced, the strength will be significantly improved at 28 days. In the ternary system, the 28-day strength is negatively correlated with increasing POFA content.

  • The purpose of this study is development of technique to use cementitious powder as recycle cement produced from deteriorated Concrete waste which has a large quantity of calcium carbonate. Therefore, after having theoretical consideration based on the properties of high-heated concrete and concerning about neutralization of Concrete, we analysis chemical properties of ingredients of cementitious powder. After making origin cement paste, then processing the accelarated carbonation, we consider the properties of hydration and chemical properties of cementitious powder under various temperature conditions. As a result of the thermal analysis, the CaCo3 content of cementitious powder would affect decision of heat temperature to recover its hydrated ability because CaCo3 content is increased when neutralization is progressed. And as a result of XRD analysis, in case of origin powder of non-neutralized paste, CaO peak is found at 700℃. but, heat temperature to generate CaO would increase when the content of neutralized ingredients is increased. Finally, recycle cement heated at 700℃ shows the best compressive strength when the content of neutralized ingredients in recycle cement is less then 50%. However, it would be quite difficult to manage quality of recycle cement according to recycling points of various concrete waste.
