Cancer cells reprogram cellular metabolism to support the malignant features of tumors, such as rapid growth and proliferation. The cancer promoting effects of metabolic reprogramming are found in many aspects: generating additional energy, providing more anabolic molecules for biosynthesis, and rebalancing cellular redox states in cancer cells. Metabolic pathways are considered the pipelines to supply metabolic cofactors of epigenetic modifiers. In this regard, cancer metabolism, whereby cellular metabolite levels are greatly altered compared to normal levels, is closely associated with cancer epigenetics, which is implicated in many stages of tumorigenesis. In this review, we provide an overview of cancer metabolism and its involvement in epigenetic modifications and suggest that the metabolic adaptation leading to epigenetic changes in cancer cells is an important non-genetic factor for tumor progression, which cooperates with genetic causes. Understanding the interaction of metabolic reprogramming with epigenetics in cancers may help to develop novel or highly improved therapeutic strategies that target cancer metabolism.

The bone fracture healing is simulated by using one of the complex system rules, named cellular automata method. It is assumed that each cell has property of Bone, Cartilage or Fibrous connective tissue. Nine local rules are adopted to change the property of each cell against the mechanical stimulus, which consists of the strain energy density, and the existence of bone in the surroundings. Two dimensional sheep metatarsal model is considered and the bone fracture healing is simulated. The simulation results agree well with those obtained by using fuzzy logic model and experimental data. The cellular automata method found to be one of the simulation methods to express the bone fracture healing. The cellular automata method is expected to be effective in representing biological phenomenon.

The propagation of a mixed-mode crack in soda-lime silica glass is modeled by movable cellular automata (MCA). In this model, a special fracture criterion is used to describe the process of crack initiation and propagation. The results obtained using the MCA criterion are compared to those obtained from other crack initiation criteria, The crack resistance curves and bifurcation angles are determined for various loading angles. The MCA results are in close agreement with results obtained using the maximum circumferential tensile stress criterion.
Thin walled steel bridge-piers/columns are vulnerable to damage, when subjected to earthquake excitations. Local buckling, global buckling or interaction between local and global buckling usually is the cause of this damage, which results in significant strength reduction of the member. In this study new innovative design concepts, "thin-walled corrugated steel columns" and "thin-walled cellular steel columns" are presented, which allow the column to undergo large plastic deformations without significant strength reduction; hence dissipate energy under cyclic loading. It is shown that, compared with the conventional designs, circular and stiffened box sections, these new innovative concepts might results in cost-effective designs, with improved buckling and ductility properties. Using a finite element model, that takes the non-linear material properties into consideration, it is shown that the corrugations will act like longitudinal stiffeners that are supporting each other, thus improving the buckling behavior and allowing for reduction of the overall wall thickness of the column.
The past two decades have witnessed an upsurge in the appreciation of adipose tissue (AT) as an immunometabolic hub harbouring heterogeneous cell populations that collectively fine-tune systemic metabolic homeostasis. Technological advancements, especially single-cell transcriptomics, have offered an unprecedented opportunity for dissecting the sophisticated cellular networks and compositional dynamics underpinning AT remodelling. The "re-discovery" of functional brown adipose tissue dissipating heat energy in human adults has aroused tremendous interest in exploiting the mechanisms underpinning the engagement of AT thermogenesis for combating human obesity. In this review, we aim to summarise and evaluate the use of single-cell transcriptomics that contribute to a better appreciation of the cellular plasticity and intercellular crosstalk in thermogenic AT.

The Poisson point process (PPP) is widely used in wireless network modeling and performance analysis because it can provide tractable results for heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) analysis. However, it cannot accurately reflect the spatial distribution characteristics of the actual base stations (BSs). Considering the fact that the distribution of macro base stations (MBSs) is exclusive, the deployment of MBSs is modeled by the Matérn hard-core point process (MHCPP), and the deployment of pico base stations (PBSs) is modeled by PPP. This paper studies the performance of multiantenna HetNets and improves the energy efficiency (EE) of HetNets by optimizing the transmit power of PBSs. We use a simple approximate method to study the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) distribution in two-tier MHCPP-PPP HetNets and derive the coverage probability, average data rate and EE of HetNets. Then, an optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the EE of HetNets. Finally, three transmission technologies are simulated and analyzed. The results show that multiantenna transmission has better system performance than single antenna transmission and that selecting the appropriate transmit power for a PBS can effectively improve the EE of the system. In addition, two-tier MHCPP-PPP HetNets have higher EE than two-tier PPP-PPP HetNets.
The hypothalamus is a crucial organ for the maintenance of appropriate body fat storage. Neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARH) detect energy shortage or surplus via the circulating concentrations of metabolic hormones and nutrients, and then coordinate energy intake and expenditure to maintain energy homeostasis. Malfunction or loss of hypothalamic ARH neurons results in obesity. Accumulated evidence suggests that hypothalamic inflammation is a key pathological mechanism that links chronic overconsumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) with the development of obesity and related metabolic complications. Interestingly, overnutrition-induced hypothalamic inflammation occurs specifically in the ARH, where microglia initiate an inflammatory response by releasing proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in response to excessive fatty acid flux. Upon more prolonged HFD consumption, astrocytes and perivascular macrophages become involved and sustain hypothalamic inflammation. ARH neurons are victims of hypothalamic inflammation, but they may actively participate in hypothalamic inflammation by sending quiescence or stress signals to surrounding glia. In this mini-review, we describe the current state of knowledge regarding the contributions of neurons and glia, and their interactions, to HFD-induced hypothalamic inflammation.
In this paper, we propose a two-stage base station (BS) sleeping scheme to save energy consumption in cellular networks. The BS sleeping mode is divided into a light sleeping stage and a deep sleeping stage according to whether there is a user in the BS's coverage. In the light sleeping stage, a BS will retain its coverage and frequently switch between the on state and the doze state according to the service characteristics. While in the deep sleeping stage analysis, the BS will shut down its coverage, and neighbor BSs will patch the coverage hole. Several closed-form formulas are derived to demonstrate the power consumption in each sleeping stage and the stage switching conditions are discussed to minimize the average power consumption. The average traffic delay caused by BS sleeping and the average deep sleeping rate under a given traffic load have also been studied. In addition, it is shown that BS sleeping is not always possible because of the limited quality of service (QoS) requirements. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can effectively reduce the average BS power consumption, at the cost of some extra traffic delay. In summary, our proposed framework provides an essential understanding of the design of future green networks that aim to take full advantage of different stages of BS sleeping to obtain the best energy efficiency.

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication has received increasing attention and been studied extensively thanks to its advantages in improving spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of cellular networks. This paper proposes a novel relay selection algorithm for multi-hop full-duplex D2D communications underlaying cellular networks. By selecting the relay of each hop in a reverse manner, the proposed algorithm reduces the heavy signaling overhead that traditional relay selection algorithms introduce. In addition, the social domain information of mobile terminals is taken into consideration and its influence on the performance of D2D communications studied, which is found significant enough not to be overlooked. Moreover, simulations show that the proposed algorithm, in absence of social relationship information, improves data throughput by around 70% and 7% and energy efficiency by 64% and 6%, compared with two benchmark algorithms, when D2D distance is 260 meters. In a more practical implementation considering social relationship information, although the proposed algorithm naturally achieves less throughput, it substantially increases the energy efficiency than the benchmarks.
The present study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and radioprotective effects of Naringin and Naringenin in ${\gamma}$-irradiated mice. The antioxidant activity of Naringin and Naringenin was evaluated by 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Healthy female BALB/c mice were administered Naringin and Naringenin orally ($90{\mu}M/dose$ and $180{\mu}M/dose$) for 7 consecutive days prior to ${\gamma}$-irradiation (6 Gy). Naringenin displayed a much higher antioxidant activity in ABTS and FRAP than naringin. ${\gamma}$-irradiation resulted in cellular damage with decreased spleen and thymus indices and white blood cells (WBC) count. Additionally, ${\gamma}$-irradiation significantly increased lipid peroxidation and decreased the levels of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione (GSH) in the liver tissue. Strikingly, prior administration of Naringenin resulted in considerable prevention of these symptoms. Protection against ${\gamma}$-irradiation-induced cellular damage by Naringenin is likely due to its higher its antioxidant activity. Together, these results confirm that Naringenin is a potent antioxidant and radioprotector.
