Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease characterized by breakdown of joint cartilage. Mitochondrial dysfunction of the chondrocyte is a risk factor for OA progression. We examined the therapeutic potential of mitochondrial transplantation for OA. Mitochondria were injected into the knee joint of monosodium iodoacetate-induced OA rats. Chondrocytes from OA rats or patients with OA were cultured to examine mitochondrial function in cellular pathophysiology. Pain, cartilage destruction, and bone loss were improved in mitochondrial transplanted-OA rats. The transcript levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, matrix metallopeptidase 13, and MCP-1 in cartilage were markedly decreased by mitochondrial transplantation. Mitochondrial function, as indicated by membrane potential and oxygen consumption rate, in chondrocytes from OA rats was improved by mitochondrial transplantation. Likewise, the mitochondrial function of chondrocytes from OA patients was improved by coculture with mitochondria. Furthermore, inflammatory cell death was significantly decreased by coculture with mitochondria. Mitochondrial transplantation ameliorated OA progression, which is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. These results suggest the therapeutic potential of mitochondrial transplantation for OA.

Development and use of blended cement concrete is gaining more importance in the construction industry with reference to durability mainly due to the pore refinement and reduction in permeability. Cracks play a major role on important parameters like permeability, rate of chloride ingress, compressive strength and thus affect the reinforcement corrosion protection. Furthermore, when a crack occurs in the cover concrete, the corrosion of the steel reinforcement may be accelerated because the deterioration causing factors can pass through the crack. In recent years the effect of cracking on the penetration of concrete has been the subject of numerous investigations. Therefore assessing the service life using blended concrete becomes obviously in considering the durability. In the present study, the corrosion assessment of composite concrete beams with and without crack with of 0.3mm using OPC, 30% PFA, 60% GGBS, 10% SF was performed using half cell potential measurement, galvanic potential measurement, mass loss of steel over a period of 60days under marine environmental conditions and the results were discussed in detail.
Purpose : To evaluate the survival and prognostic factors in patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer treated with curative radiotherapy alone or combined with chemotherapy Materials and Methods : A retrospective analysis was undertaken of 35 patients who had locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer and treated with curative radiotherapy in Department of Therapeutic Radiology, Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital, from January 1991 through December 1993. According to AJCC staging, 15 patients were stage IIIA, and 20 were stage IIIB. Radiotherapy was delivered with 1 8-2 Gy per fraction/day. 5 days per week using 6 MV X-ray, to a total dose ranging from 48.8 Gy to 66.6 Gy (median, 61.2 Gy) in 4 to 9 weeks. Ten patients received neoadjuvant or concurrent chemotherapy with FIP (5-FU, ifosfamide, and cisplatin) or FP (5-FU and cisplatin) Results : For all Patients, median survival was 6 months. 1-year and 2-year survival rates were 23.3% and 6.7%, respectively The median survival was 8 months in stage IIIA and 5.5 months in stage IIIB. In patients treated with radiation therapy alone, median survival was 5 months and 1-year survival rate was 9%. In patients who received chemotherapy, median survival was 11 months and 1-year survival rate was 60%. The difference of survival between these two groups was statistically significant (p=0.03). Total radiation dose, degree of response, and Post-treatment ECOG score were also significantly associated with survival. But it was not affected by age, sex, pretreatment ECOG score, presence or absence of weight loss, tumor location. pathologic type, N stage, and degree of response to treatment. Conclusion : Conventional radiotherapy alone is unlikely to achieve long term survival in patients with stage III NSCLC. Radiotherapy with altered fractionation schedule or multimodality treatment combined with surgery and/or chemotherapy should be considered if feasible.

The purpose of this experiment was to examine the histological changes and the pattern of expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) and type I collagen in the elongated bone affected by osteodistraction of the mandibular body in an adult canine model. Seven adult male mongrel dogs weighing over 20kg were used for this experiment. The author excluded 3 animals because they died before the planned time of sacrifice. The custom-made linear extraoral device and 4 bicortical fixation screws 2.3mm in diameter, 50mm in total length, 15mm in screw length were used in each animal. The distal part of the distractor produced a 0.75mm gap between proximal and distal bony segments every $360^{\circ}$ turn of the rotation rod of the device. The mandibular body of the right side from each animal was experimental side and the left side was left intact and served as control. At the experimental side, the mandibular body was osteotomized. After 5-day latency period, the segments were distracted with a rate of 1.1mm/day and a rhythm of two/day for ensuing 7 days. The animals were sacrificed at the 4th. 17th, and 32th day after the end of the distraction. The bony specimens were decalcified, embedded in paraffin, sectioned $5{\mu}m$ thick and stained with Masson trichrome and examined under the light microscope. The immunohistochemical examinations using anti-PCNA antibody and anti-type-I collagen antibody were performed to examine the pattern of the expression of PCNA and type I collagen, respectively. Results : 1. The mean increment of the distance between the proximal and distal screw-holding parts of the distractor was 6.8mm. The average elongation of the mandible in the experimental side was 5.3mm. The loss of elongation was 1.5mm in average. 2. New bone was already observed at the 4th. day after the end of distraction. But, bony union was not completed in the distraction gap at the 32th. day after the end of distraction by radiographic and microscopic examinations. 3. The expression rate of PCNA positive cells in the distraction gap had a tendency of decrease from 35.1-68.8% initially, to 49.1%, and finally to 17.6-27.2%. But at the final period, the tissue of the elongated gap still had the ability of cell proliferation. On the other hand, the expression of PCNA positive cells in the control side were negligible through the experimental period. 4. PCNA positive cells were observed primarily both at the central fibrous zone and at the region of just adjacent to CFZ which initiated new bone formation. 5. The expression pattern of the type I collagen was not zone-specific. They were observed diffusely throughout the elongation gap. 6. The predominant mechanism of new bone formation in the distraction gap was intramembranous. But, some of the regenerated bone was formed by endochondral ossification.
The objective of this study is to conduct a thermal-hydraulic analysis on the spent fuel pool and to evaluate a parametric effect for the thermal-hydraulic analysis of spent fuel pool. The selected parameters are the Reynolds Number and the gap flow through the oater gap between fuel cell and fuel bundle. The simplified flow network for a path of fuel cells is used to analyze the natural circulation phenomenon. In the flow network analysis, the pressure drop for each assembly from the entrance of the fuel rack to the exit of the fuel assembly is balanced by the driving head due to the density difference between the pool fluid and the average fluid in each spent fuel assembly. The governing equations ore developed using this relation. But, since the parameters(flow rate, pressure loss coefficient, decay heat, density)are coupled each other, iteration method is used to obtain the solution. For the analysis of the YGN 3&4 spent fuel rack, 12 channels are considered and the inputs such as decay heat and pressure loss coefficient are determined conservatively. The results show the thermal-hydraulic characteristics(void fraction, density, boiling height)of the YGN 3&4 spent fuel rack. There occurs small amount of boiling in the cells. Fuel cladding temperature is lower than 343.3$^{\circ}C$. The evaluation of parametric effect indicates that flow resistances by geometric effect are very sensitive to Reynolds number in the transition region and the gap flow is negligible because of the larger flow resistance in the gap flow path than in the fuel bundle.
Sodium borohydride, $NaBH_4$, shows a number of advantages as hydrogen source for portable proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs). Properties of $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis reaction using unsupported Co-B, Co-P-B catalyst were studied. BET surface area of catalyst, yield of hydrogen, effect of $NaBH_4$ concentration and durability of catalyst were measured. The BET surface area of unsupported Co-B catalyst was $75.7m^2/g$ and this value was 18 times higher than that of FeCrAlloy supported Co-B catalyst. The hydrogen yield of $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis reaction by unsupported catalysts using 20~25 wt% $NaBH_4$ solution was 97.6~98.5% in batch reactor. The hydrogen yield decrease to 95.3~97.0% as the concentration of $NaBH_4$ solution increase to 30 wt%. The loss of unsupported catalyst was less than that of FeCrAlloy supported catalyst during $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis reaction and the loss increased with increasing of $NaBH_4$ concentration. In continuous reactor, hydrogen yield of $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis was 90% using 1.2 g of unsupported Co-P-B catalyst with $3{\ell}/min$ hydrogen generation rate.

One-dimensional modeling was carried-out to predict the capacity loss of a lithium-ion polymer battery during cycling. The model not only accounted for electrochemical kinetics and ionic mass transfer in a battery cell, but also considered the parasitic reaction inducing the capacity loss. In order to validate the modeling, modeling results were compared with the measurement data of the cycling behaviors of the lithium-ion polymer batteries having nominal capacity of 5Ah from LG Chem. The cycling was performed under the protocol of the constant current discharge and the constant current and constant voltage charge. The discharge rate of 1C was used. The range of state of charge was between 1 and 0.2. The voltage was kept constant at 4.2 V until the charge current tapered to 50 mA. The retention capacity of the battery was measured with 1C and 5C discharge rates before the beginning of cycling and after every 100 cycles of cycling. The modeling results were in good agreement with the measurement data.
This study was investigated to find out the change of reproductive and histological biomarkers of Ruditapes philippinarum exposed to nonylphenol (NP). Experimental period was 16 weeks. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and three NP exposure conditions (0.05, 0.1, $0.2 mg\;NP\;L^{-1}$). Gonad index was higher in exposure group than control in female and higher in control than exposure group in male. Intersexuality in the NP exposure group was 14.56% with male exhibiting higher ratio than female. Histological analysis of organ system illustrated expansion of hemolymph sinus, loss of striated border of inner epidermis and degeneration of mucous cell in the mantle. In the gill partially disappearance of frontal and lateral cilia, degeneration of mucous cell were observed. Also, hyperplasia of epithelium and disappearance of striated border were observed in the foot. As the concentration of NP increased, the accumulation of lipofuscin increased in the digestive gland. The results of this study suggest that NP induces reduction of survival rate, histopathology and intersex of R. philippinarum. Furthermore, it is indentified that NP functions as an estrogenic effector on the reproduction of R. philippinarum.

Drought, a common environmental constraint, induces a range of physiological, biochemical and molecular changes in plants, and can cause severe reductions in crop yield. Consequently, understanding the molecular mechanisms of drought tolerance is an important step towards crop biotechnology. Here, we report that the rice (Oryza sativa) homeodomain-leucine zipper class IV transcription factor gene, ${\underline{R}ice}$${\underline{o}utermost}$${\underline{c}ell-specific}$ gene 10 (Roc10), enhances drought tolerance and grain yield by increasing lignin accumulation in ground tissues. Overexpression of Roc10 in rice significantly increased drought tolerance at the vegetative stages of growth and promoted both more effective photosynthesis and a reduction in water loss rate, compared with non-transgenic controls or RNAi transgenic plants. Importantly, Roc10 overexpressing plants had a higher drought tolerance at the reproductive stage of growth and a higher grain yield compared with the controls under field-drought conditions. Roc10 is mainly expressed in outer cell layers including the epidermis and the vasculature of the shoots, which coincides with areas of cell wall lignification. Roc10 overexpression elevated the expression levels of lignin biosynthetic genes in shoots, with a concomitant increase in the accumulation of lignin, while the overexpression and RNAi lines showed opposite patterns of lignin accumulation. We identified downstream target genes of Roc10 by performing RNA-seq and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-seq analyses of shoot tissues. Roc10 was found to directly bind to the promoter of PEROXIDASEN/PEROXIDASE38, a key gene in lignin biosynthesis. Together, our findings suggest that Roc10 confers drought stress tolerance by promoting lignin biosynthesis in ground tissues.
The characteristics of VRLA (valve regulated Iead-acid) battery with the tubular positive plate and gel type electrolyte were examined as a function of active material filling density. The filling density of positive plate was 3.2 g/mL, 3.4 g/mL, and 3.6 g/mL, respectively. These VRLA batteries were cycled with 100% DOD (depth of discharge) at the $C_5/5$ rate, followed by IU-type recharge with $I_{max}=0.2C_{10}/10$ and a final voltage V=2.40 V/cell. The test was performed in a thermostatic room at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The result indicated that the initial capacity was independent of active material filling density, i.e., the highest initial capacity was 3.4 g/mL of filling density and the lowest was 3.6 g/mL. On aspect of the cycle-life performance of the VRLA battery, the filling density of 3.6 g/mL was similar to that of 3.4 g/mL in the positive plate, and both were higher than that of 3.2 g/mL. Water-loss and degradation of the VRLA battery were decreased according to an increase of the filling density in the positive plate. The optimum filling density of the active material was 3.4~3.6 g/mL.
